Help - Photos and avatars
« on: Aug 01, 2006, 02:19:24 PM »
You can use avatars in your profile and photos in your post on this forum.  Avatars are limited to 65 X 65 100 X 100 pixels. You add an avatar from your profile.  If you attempt to add a photo larger than 65 X 65 100 X 100, the system will not accept it.

Photos may be added in the body of your post.  They are limited to 640 X 480.  Please resize all photos before attempting to insert into your message. If the photo is larger, it will not indicate an error, just won't show your photo.

Thanks

Jim

One quick note, if the avatar or photo is larger than the stated sizes, it just will not appear.  You will not get an error message.  The system is designed to just not display anything bigger than the limits.  We've placed these limits on sizes as large photos take quite a long time to download for our dial-up users.

I was just noticing that I didn't state that we don't allow photos to be uploaded directly to the forum.  Like most forums, you can use the [img] tag and use one of the many photo hosting sites.  Here are a few that I know folks have used:

Photobucket

Sony Imagestation

ImageShack

Image Thrust (Use with caution - has pop-up ads)

Some of these have storage limits and some don't.  Lots of members have all three and more.

If you have trouble posting pics or avatars, feel free to PM one of the moderators or myself.  We would be glad to help.

No limit, just remember some of our members are on dial-up so use some discretion.  Post count means nothing here so it's better to split 10 pics up into two post instead of putting all 10 in one post.  As long as everyone keeps that in mind we won't have to activate any kind of limit.

We like pictures.  :goofy:

I have a question!!!
I've been posting clickable thumbnails down in crafts & other areas. Theyre good for quicker load for dial up users. I get that. But the coding is longer. Which is better for bandwidth? clickables or direct links? Or does it matter? I dont quite get exactly what bandwidth is....

Good question.  The clickables are probably better as far as bandwidth goes.  Bandwidth is a term used to describe the amount of data, in bytes, that is transferred to or from a server in a specific time.  It is usually measured monthly.  When someone clicks on the topic, the thumbnail is displayed using some bandwidth.  When a person clicks on the thumbnail, the click using some bandwidth but the picture is displayed, in your case from photobucket, and that would be using the bandwidth from there.

I like the clickables.

Okay, Jim, that's great, but how do you do clickables?   :dunno:

You would use the URL tag as well as the IMG tag.  In the IMG tag, you add "th_" to the file name.  This stands for thumbnail.  Here's what the code looks like:

Code: [Select]
[url=http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k180/JimBaby/jimdianna.jpg][IMG]http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k180/JimBaby/th_jimdianna.jpg[/IMG][/url]
Here is what the clickable thumbnail looks like:

When you click it, it opens the full size pic in another window.

Okay, thanks, Jim!  This may take some getting used to and lots of practice!  :dunno: Does it make the pages load faster for dial-ups?   ???

Rita, photobucket will create the clickable thumbnail coding for you.
1) go to your pb page, right under the photo you want to use there is a small white box you can check, above the Email & IM coding line. check that.
2)Then scroll to the very bottom of the page and click on 'Generate HTML and IMG code'
3)That will take you to a page that says 'Generated HTML, Ebay and IMG Code' at the top in blue
4)go to the third choice down which says 'IMG clickable thumbnails for message boards - recommended' above it.
5) Copy the whole code in that box
6) paste it here
ta'da'!!

If you have more than 1 pic on a page you can check all of them, then generate html & img code and it will have all those pics coded into that third box and you can bring them all here at once instead of going back and forth for each picture.

Sure does.  It is especially good when there are 3 or 4 pics because the thumbnails take so much less time.  It's actually faster for everyone and is why it is recommended by PB.

Thanks, Wrennie for posting the correct PB way.

'Welcome.
I just recently learned to do them the PB way. My friend Pixie (that made that ghost under the tree for us) taught me how to do it.
PB also has a resize feature.
Click on edit near the photo you want and it will resize all the way down to avatar if you want. If you want the pic big AND an avatar out of it just right click on the pic, chose save pic as, and reload into PB then you can have a full size and an avatar.

Mine didn't work.  I have my stuff at Picture Trail.  In the "clickable" box I copied this long code but the picture doesn't come out.  I've done it twice.

but, I just realized, if you click on the [/url] in my post the picture will come up.  Wonder if that's what picture trail does.
