Spyware/Adware/Browser Hijackers

These can both be really difficult to remove.  Sure you can use any number of removal programs but sometimes they don't get everything.  Windows is such a dynamic operating system that there are hundreds of places that small tidbits of code can be hidden and unless you really know what you are doing, it can be almost impossible to find and remove.

There is help though.  With every new attempt to make your browsing experience miserable there are folks out there that really enjoy helping those of us that aren't quite as computer literate find, and remove this malware.  One tool that these folks recommend to use is Hijack This.  It's FREE software that creates a text file that pretty much tells someone that knows what they are looking at, just about everything there is to know about your system.  In most cases, you can post this text file to a discussion forum set up specifically for that and someone there will tell you exactly what to do to fix/remove the malware.

Here is a link to Hijack This and some other very useful programs.  Also there are links to forums that the author of the program recommends posting your text file too in order to get someone knowledgeable to take a look at it.

I've used this software as well as a few others that are listed there.

Okay, this is an old topic!

I rarely advise clients use HiJack This. Not because it's not a great product because it IS one of the three recommended by the pro's.

But, I rarely advice they use it because to use it, one must understand the directory structure of the machine, as well as which files (executables) are okay to delete and which are not.

I like to get to know my customers and depending on their level of computer knowlege, I'll either run it for them while I'm there working for them, or if they are good, I'll tell them about it.

A lot of damage can be done that most folks won't know how to undo with this program.  The key is before you begin, BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP! LOL

Hugs, Peg
How are you?  I'm great!  Glad to see you! Hope we meet again!
