Would you buy/rent a house if you knew it was haunted?
« on: Dec 07, 2006, 02:10:48 PM »
Just wondering if any of you would buy or rent a house if you knew someone had died in it or that it was haunted? If not, why? If so, would you try to contact the spirits?

I probably wouldn't buy a house if I knew that some brutal blood and gore killing had occurred in the house. Other wise I don't think it would bother me.

I don't know if I would not try to contact them or not. Knowing me, probably would. I would be open to any communication initiated by them.

Hmm, good question!? I've never really had the opportunity or need to make that decision but I would agree that:
I probably wouldn't buy a house if I knew that some brutal blood and gore killing had occurred in the house.

That would not be a good selling point for any real estate.? There may even be some laws on the books that says information such as that must be disclosed at time of sale.

Someone dying in the house wouldn't scare me away.? I would think it would be more the circumstances that I would be interested in.?

I really don't think I would want to buy a house that is haunted, but it would be nice to spend a night in one of the places in Savannah or the like that is supposed to have a high spirit activity.? I wouldn't sleep a bit!? ;D

There are rules of disclosure for real estate, Jim. I saw them while I was cruising the net. I will find them later and post a link on them for the information.

A quick search led me to this:

The subject of stigmatized homes is complex because a number of states have disclosure rules relating to such properties. Some say, as an example, that you must disclose if the home was the site of a suicide or murder. Some say disclosure is required but only for so many years. The definition of "stigmatized" varies from state to state and in the those jurisdictions without a stigmatized housing rule it is difficult to know what the standards are, if any.

A home with ghosts may well be very disturbing to some buyers -- a real deal-breaker. Other purchasers, however, may have a very different view; they may enjoy interactions with phantasms and specters.

To such buyers, an infestation of ghosts is a plus.

As a broker you have an obligation to see what the rules for stigmatized properties are in your jurisdiction.

If disclosure is necessary, say in writing and as part of the sale agreement that it has been reported that the property is haunted (occupied?) by one or more ghosts. You need to assure that neither the seller nor you guarantees the presence or absence of ghosts -- each would be a difficult reality to prove. Please see what the American Bar Association says about stigmatized properties and see a local attorney for specific advice and language.

The whole article is here: http://realtytimes.com/rtcpages/20051216_askrt.htm

I am sure I can find more on this when I have more time...

My father died in the house I grew up in, my friend died on the front steps of the first house I owned.
I'm sure there are some very old homes where people died in or around them that years later new owners never knew about.
You could build a new home and if the land it sits on is haunted the home may be too.
I'd say theres lots of ways to not know if theres a possible spirit there.

Look, I know the supernatural is something that isn't supposed to happen, but it does happen...RZ

I think I read somewhere that after three years you do not have to disclose it. I think I would anyway. Who knows it might make it sell faster. Nobody told me Miss Agnus was still hanging around the property when I bought it.

Thought this was an interesting topic and wanted to share my opinion. I think that if the person died of natural causes or a non violent death then there is no reason not to buy/rent the home. Who knows you may be able to help the spirit inside either get closure or even make descent contact with them. Either way I think it would be interesting to coincide in the same household as a spirit!

A man was driving down our road. He had a heart attack and ran into my house. He died before the EMS arrived. I am sorry that the man died, but it doesn't bother me that it happened in my yard.

My brother also died in my house. You would not believe the trouble that I have getting guests to sleep in his room. They all want Dianna's room. I have in the past let them take my room, but not anymore. If they can't sleep in his bedroom, the Holiday Inn is right down the road.

Rita, Aunt Bonnie has a wraparound porch. We were sitting on the porch having coffee.

When the truck started coming across the yard, Aunt Bonnie started running down the porch. I thought she was trying to "catch" it. She was chasing Little Roy to make sure that he didn't get hit by the truck.

It was very sad that the guy died before they could do anything... :'(

Uncle Johnny, on the other hand, is still hanging around Aunt Bonnie's house, in my opinion. I have told her that she could change my bedroom to his room, but she refuses to do it. I can't believe the people that are afraid to sleep in there!

Rita,  I wish that I could telaport you the porch right now. It is covered with pollen and the pickets will need painting this year.

Only one occurance has happened in the room. I think I posted it under ghost stories a while back.

No thanks I'll keep the painting. I can always stick brushes in Jim and Dianna's hands, as I have done in the past.

:) The house that we live in now......a few years ago, 2 years prior to us buying the house in which we live, a little girl died here, she was sick with leakemia and i do know that she passed away in one of the 3 bedrooms, i have never asked which one.
If i knew that a brutal murder took place, then i may have a different opinion, but right now, it doesnt bother me in the least or does it bother my family.

the place i live in was said to be haunted, but i never had anything happen, orbs in pics that i belive are dust, and a creepy pic that i tossed away!  but thats all, i never seen any ghosts like others who lived here have. she wouldnt even sell the place because of it and her kids refused t live here, so she gave it to my mom, who sold it to me, ive been here for about 4 years and alls good! ;D
she says things are happening in her new home so im wondering if hauntings can follow a person?

Christy, when I was taking a Parapsychology class I remember discussing whether a spirit (ghost) could follow a certain person or if they always occupied a certain place.  Usually, spirits are attached or drawn to a specific place for a reason (where they died, where they lived, etc.).  However, there have been cases where a spirit reportably followed a person from one place to another.  It seems plausible that if a spirit (ghost) was attached to a certain person it would want to be with that person wherever they were. Apparently, this is often the case when the person was a relative or close friend of the spirit.   ;) Of course, there were also reports of spirits (ghosts) being attached to objects that were somehow important or had some meaning to them when they were here.  If a person were to take that specific object to another house when they moved the spirit would follow that object and that could make it appear to be following the person when it was really following the object.   ;)

I live in the house Billie died in even sleep in the same bed. She told me right after we moved in here about spirits she saw here. I am trying to remember what she said to write it as near as possible to how she told me. I have slpet in the room Billy The Kid was gunned down in. My EX-Bil and Sil (my first wifes sister) lived in this house and farmed the land for years.

No I wouldnt buy or rent a house if I knew it was haunted. If they gone I want them to leave me alone, all though they cant hurt you they would make me hurt myself trying to get away or have a heartattack
