Santee Indian Mound

On Thanksgiving when Dianna and I were driving around, we stopped here.  This is about 6-8 miles from the house. 



This was also the site of Ft Watson that was actually built on top of the mound making it the highest point around.  This from the SC tourist site; "This outpost was built by the British on a Santee Indian mound at least 30 feet high. Gen. Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, and Light Horse Harry Lee laid siege to the post April 15-23, 1781, by erecting a tower of logs under the cover of night enabling them to fire into the British stockade. This brought about the surrender of the fort cutting off the main British supply line to Camden, forcing Lord Rawdon to withdraw from that position. From an observation point at the top of a massive 30-ft-tall Indian mound, visitors can get a panoramic view of Santee Cooper and the countryside. Santee Indian Mound and Santee National Wildlife Refuge make a historic and adventurous place to visit for hiking, biking and birding."

According to some additional info I found, remains from the mound have been carbon dated at over 20,000 years old.

The mound is closed to visitors at night but we will try and go back out there and get some additional pictures from the top.  This particular day we decided not to venture up the walkway.

Good link, honey, on the wildlife refuge.  We both failed to mention that the land directly across the road from us is part of the refuge also.

What a neat place to explore.   So being that it is an Indian Burial Mound, are there any reports of hauntings?

We used to go there and hide Easter eggs on the mound.

I haven't heard of any hauntings.  It is closed to the public at night so we can't get in there to investigate.

These places can be so interesting.  We have Monks Mound here and we used to fly kites from the top of the mound.  It was always one of the target spots for class field trips.  I've never heard anything about any hauntings, but it's always been a prime site for archaeologists.

Thats so cool Jim, i would try and go back myself at night, just to snap a few pics and see if anything shows up.
