« on: Jan 03, 2008, 06:36:38 AM »
I have been having an ISP problem.. I don't know exactly what is going on but my computer keeps saying that I have No Isp address.. I was on the phone with my server last night for an hour and a half and they couldn't figure it out either.. So last night I unplugged everything all night and pluged it back in today.. and it seems to be working but for how long I don't know  :SmileyFear: :SmileyFear:

I need a bit of clarification.  ISP stands for Internet Service Provider.  IP on the other hand stands for Internet Protocol.  Without an IP, your computer can not navigate on the WWW.  In real simple terms, the IP is your address or location on the WWW.

Without getting too detailed, your cable or dsl modem, grabs an IP from your ISP whenever you connect to the internet.  This is usually handled by something called DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and is pretty much transparent to you.  Sometimes that gets scrambled, it just happens and the best fix is to turn the modem off for approximately 2 minutes and them back on.  This resets everything and grabs a new IP from your ISP.

Did that confuse you?  Hopefully Peg will come along and expand her topic about home networking.  Lots of this should be covered there.

Exactly.. I do understand and that is what they explained to me when I was having the problem.. But they had no idea of how to fix it .. I turned off the modem dissconnected everything and it Still was not working last night.. .. Keith said to unplug the phone and everything and leave it till this morning.. It worked but this same thing happened the other day as well..
I am wondering if I am going to have to have the comcast people come in and make sure all the routing is right  :thpullhairout:

That's great Rita.  Be sure and tell us what you did so if anyone ever has this happen to them, they will be able to come here and get the "fix".

Good job.

I have a in home network .. I have Vonage for phone and a laptop as well as a wireless printer that all run off my computer.. Sometimes there is a glitch in the lines and they could be anything from the modem to the router and or the phone system.. What I did was unplug everything .. I left it all unplugged all night but you only need to do this for 5 minutes.. Some less but to be on the safe side 5 ... Then plugged everything in and it all reset itself and worked great!  Just make sure you shut down your computer with the start button in the windows program.
Ohhh I almost forgot .. when you go onto the NET if it says no network available go to the top of the page and select the File button. Scroll down and Make sure there is NO check mark next to the work offline area. If there Is Uncheck it and try to log on to the internet again  :wink5:
