Tomatoes and Salmonella
« on: Jun 11, 2008, 07:51:34 PM »
Are you in one of the states that have reported cases of salmonella from tomatoes?  They have stopped serving tomatoes  in most of the restaurants and fast food places here in Summerville, SC.

Since mid-April, 167 persons infected with Salmonella Saintpaul with the same genetic fingerprint have been identified in 17 states: Arizona (12 persons), California (2), Colorado (1), Connecticut (1), Idaho (2), Illinois (27), Indiana (7), Kansas (5), Michigan (2), New Mexico (39), Oklahoma (3), Oregon (3), Texas (56), Utah (1), Virginia (2), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (3). These were identified because clinical laboratories in all states send Salmonella strains from ill persons to their State public health laboratory for characterization. Among the 73 persons who have been interviewed, illnesses began between April 16 and May 27, 2008. Patients range in age from 1 to 82 years; 49% are female. At least 23 persons were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

I bet that's why my hamburger from Hardee's didn't have tomato on Sunday when we got home.  I saw a sign in Food Lion the other day about this too. They had taken all the varieties they were talking about off the shelf.

Home-grown tomatoes are the best, anyway. I can't wait until ours start turning red. I have already spotted a couple of sandwich size ones out there... :licklips:

Keith mentioned this to me the other day, but I'm getting our toms at the same place I always do & we've had them in salads almost every day for the past month or so (with no ill-effects), so I'm not too worried about it. :dunno:

My Sungold plants seem to be happy, but they aren't doing anything yet.  I just snapped off the lower branches yesterday, so they should be waking up & taking off pretty soon now.  It'll be so nice to be eating our own, after paying no less than $1.00/lb for them lately.

News said that it was only Round Robin, plum, and roma tomatoes are the ones affected.  What I heard said that the CDC or whatever controls this sorta stuff, can't find a common denominator but "think" all other tomatoes are safe.  On tomatoland, someone posted a link to an article about pesticides and other chemical controls are havens for salmonella, especially when mixed with on-site (aka non-chlorinated) water.

California tomatoes have been cleared of any blame. They are saying they think it is maters shipped in from south of the border. Those are the ones most being eaten right now. Meanwhile Ca tomatoes have doubled in price, at least.
