What have I gotten myself into?

WWW
« on: Jul 15, 2008, 02:30:57 PM »

On July 30, 2008, SSH will be 2 years old.  Last year we had about 10 members online and we "chatted" in the Spirit Lounge.  This year we have the chat room so lets agree on a time and have another community party to celebrate our 2 years.

We need to decide on a start time and length.  Keep in mind some of our members are on the west coast and even some are international.  Agreeing on a time will be tough, but we will try to make it long enough so the most people can get an opportunity to drop in.

Use this topic to make suggestions.  Once we finalize the time I will send a mass email letting everyone know.

I don't know how many of the members here have a day job with set hours, but since the 30th falls on a weekday, I would suggest 8:00 p.m. Central time. That would be 9 p.m. on the east coast and 6 p.m. on the west coast. That should handle the US pretty good. I really couldn't give much suggestion for times that would mesh with international members.

I'm like you Barb, not sure if we can have a convenient time for our international members.  I agree with your hours suggestion.  We could run it for about 2 hours so that gives a pretty good window so folks could drop in.  That would run till 11 our time and that's my bedtime  yawn .

That time sounds pretty good since I get off work at 8 pm ( central time) but, dont know if the wife will let me on the computer since she is going to be off on that day, maybe we can trade off to where she can be on for the first hour and me the second hour. either way I will be on.

Great, I'm hoping we can get quite a few folks in the chat room.  I think the most we have had in there is 5 at a time.  Last year we had 9 members stop by so hopefully we can beat that number this year.  We didn't have FlashChat then though so we used the Spirit Lounge.

Anymore comments on the time?  Do we all agree that 9-11 PM Eastern will be the time?  You can do the conversions for you individual time zones.  I want to finalize the time so that I can send an email from the board and give everyone the opportunity to attend.

Make sure you have the most recent Adobe Flash Player installed.  If you don't have at least version 9.0 the FlashChat module will probably not work correctly.  You can go to this site and it will tell you what version you have installed:  http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/ .  You may want to try the chat room before the night of the chat.

You are doing a great job.  There is a ton of work that goes into the upkeep of these boards, and lot's of patience and sticktoitness is required.  I for one appreciate the service you are giving to other so freely.  Thank you much, Peggy

For those that can't be on at night, we could have a chat that morning/ early afternoon. idea I can be here then, but Jim will be at work. What do you think, Wrennie?

With a morning/early afternoon chat, we could possibly see some of our "across the pond" folks. How about it, John and Tam? Aren't y'all five hours ahead of the EST time? Biiata, how about you? grinnnn

An alternative chat earlier in the day will work fine.  I encourage everyone that can though, to attend the one in the evening.  Just like any other function, you set a time and know going into it that there are folks that won't be able to attend.

I haven't completed the agenda yet as there are some specific topics I want to cover during the chat.  These topics will not be covered in your daytime chat.

Our anniversary chat was a success.  Thanks go out to those that were able to stop by.  We had a total of 10 members make an appearance and had 9 in the chat room all at one time.

We talked about some significant dates in the past and some things to think about for the future.  I will try to get some screen shots of the portal add-on I was talking about.  We will have some holiday themes this year for Halloween and Christmas.  I will have more information on that as the time draws near.  As always if the holiday theme causes you too much slow down, you will always be able to revert back to this one.

There were only a few technical problems and they were localized to individuals.  I thought the FlashChat worked rather well and enjoyed chatting with the members.  We didn't discuss it but we might want to do something like a scheduled chat each month.

I also mentioned that we could add an arcade option but we didn't discuss that at length either.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone for being a part of the SSH family and making it a nice, friendly community on the internet.

I didn't last much longer either.  Most everyone was gone by 11.  I wonder if there is any interest to have a monthly chat, like on the last Wednesday of the month.  Or Friday?  Might be a good opportunity for everyone to get together.  Of course there doesn't have to be any schedule, the chat room is open all the time.

Sorry I wasnt able to join in the chat, it has been really hectic around work and  hot that day and had to stay late, by the time I got home I was barley able to crawl up my 5 steps into the house. I do think its a good idea to have a monthly chat session.

Ok, any ideas/suggestions on a date and time?  I'm thinking it would be good to pick a specific time monthly, like the last Wednesday, or something like that instead of a date.  Any thoughts?  Are we the only 3 that are interested in this?
