A lighthearted look at preparing for disasters
« on: Oct 23, 2008, 08:57:38 AM »
I recently read this article on preparing for any kind of disaster. While the writer did make me smile, they also made me think.

What do you think? Are you prepared?

Very good article with lots of good points made, Sarah! :applause:

We wouldn't be prepared. :-[ We will just come stay with you... :giggle:

Seriously though, this article is very thought-provoking...

Well we certainly are not prepared.  There are a ton of great ideas in there though.  I really should have the bug out bags ready for our family.  I just cannot imagine getting all that we need if we were to have to rush out of here.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

Great link Sarah.   There is so much info in that one that you almost have to read it several times to get it all.  Reading it made me realize how unprepared we really are.

It was quite funny but had some good points. I live in earthquake and/or wildfire country. I do try to stockpile quite a bit. (Oh, I wasn't supposed to advertise that, was I?). Lately I have been more paring down only so I can see what it is I have. And to clean up a bit. But the plan is to restock soon.

I keep a good amount of food on hand, and am working on more. I do need to work on the bug out bags...I have no idea where most of our important papers and such are right now.

Looking at all that should be done as a whole picture can be pretty overwhelming, but taking it one step at a time makes it pretty manageable. I've been hungry before, and I never intend to be again. It gives me great motivation to keep plugging along.

Our church believes in family preparedness so all of this is a part of our doctrine.  We even have food storage facilities spread out all over.  They will be open to the public on a first come first serve basis in the case of a major disaster.

I do things like buy a case of top ramen when it is on sale.  It doesn't cost much but it can make a big difference.  Even when it's just times like now when I don't want to go grocery shopping or eat anything heavy.

I have a 72 hour bag prepared and in the closet incase I have to leave quickly.  And I would love to have a bio-fuel generator but that's still on the wish list.
