Transfer from old to new more problems
« on: Nov 08, 2008, 07:32:07 AM »
Help   :help:

One more problem with the transfer to the new computer.  I can't get my e-mail account to show up on the new computer.  I've never had that problem before and I've had this account since I first got e-mail.  I've had it on several computers but now it just comes up with a blank page.  Is it the computer or is it hotmail that is the problem.  Of course hotmail will not respond to any requests for information.  They just send you to there useless help menu.

I have no idea how to fix that one Tammy.  I sure wish I could help you out on that.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

Hotmail is a web-based email so if your browser works, it should work.  Having said that, hotmail is not known to work real well.  It still sucks up emails from the board so I had to ban the use of hotmail to register.  Too bad.

If you are accessing hotmail from a different computer, you will have to login as the cookie is still on your old one.  If after logging in you get a white screen, I believe it would be a problem with hotmail and not your computer.

I can log in with the old one but not with the new one and now I have a trojan horse which my spyware software can't seem to get rid of.  Grrrrrh.  Will this disaster ever end?

That's not good.  Do you know what the title of the trojan horse is?  If you do I may be able to help get rid of it.  Spyware software doesn't normally take care of things like that.  Your anti-virus software does that.  Spybot S&D will remove some though so be sure and try that.  There is a link in the spyware topic.

Thanks Jim I'll go and get it.  I'm so tired of stuff happening.  Maybe I should have just stayed at the old place and let them buldoze it around me lol.  I'm feeling a bit self-pitying can you tell?  Probably has something to do with the flu.

Let me know what it says when you run it.  Some of those things are tough to get rid of.

Tammy, do you have a CD drive on your new computer?  If you do I can send you the files you are trying to download.  That might be quicker than you downloading them on dial-up.  Let me know and I can get you a CD in the mail.

If you could do that I would really appreciate it.  The new computer does have a cd.  That would be great.  Sorry I didn't think to look here this morning.  I'm having a really interesting day.  If I still lived on the second floor of the bus station I'd have already tossed the computer out the window.  I don't even want to look at it right now.  I sure hope there is a fix for it.  I deleted all of my files off of the old one to prepare to give it to it's new owner.  Now I can't get to any of them.  Grrrrrrh.

Got you a disk made tonight Tammy.  It has AVG AntiVirus, SpyWare Blaster, SpyBot S&D, Adware2008, CCleaner.  These are all programs that Dianna and I use to keep things running smooth.  All the links were here on the board in the various stickied topics.  Dianna is going to write you a short guide on how to use them.  If you have any problems when you get the disk, post in the appropiate topics and we will get it all figured out.

It may be a day or so before we get this in the mail.  Dianna will let you know.

Thank you so much Jim.  I so much want to have everything in one place without going bald or crying all over the keyboard.

Funny that I get emotional when I have trouble doing something but I do.

It's crazy how ham strung I feel when I can't get to my data.  All my recipes and my to do list are in there.  I'm completely lost.  Isn't that silly?  I didn't even have a computer until the 80's and that was only because David insisted.

Thank you so much for helping me out.  I really appreciate it.

You're better than, I didn't have one until the late 90s.  Now I'd be lost without one. Makes one wonder how we got along pre-computer. lol

Can you believe paper tablets.  I still have them by the boat loads.  But computers are so much better.  Easier to find things when I need them.  But I still take my tablet when I go to the store.  Otherwise I come home without half of the stuff that I need.

Even after taking it to the computer place I still have a virus.  Grrrrrh.  I'm installing your programs but when I go to the cd only 2 programs show up.  They are the ccleaner and the spyware blaster.  But I can get on the internet so I'm going to try and download them from here.  Cross your fingers for me.

Awwww, Tammy. I'm sorry. I meant to tell you that the programs would purge all of your passwords...

I hope you are able to get the computer up and running. Since the experts at the computer place weren't able to fix it, did they charge you anyway?

This time rather than trying to save it I'm going to try and use the open button instead.  First I deleted the corrupted files so we'll see how that goes.

That gave me an error message too.  So now I'm trying to load AVG.  We'll see how that goes.

Not sure what you have going on but I have a copy of the disk here and it has all the programs on it.

I can't believe they said they would clean it up and still left a virus on it.  You shouldn't pay unless the flat fee was for a specific time.  Most computer places charge for what they call "bench time" and that is quite expensive.

CCleaner will delete all your cookies unless you tell it which ones not to.  I'm not sure if Dianna got that detailed.  I have mine set so that it doesn't erase the cookies for all the forums I visit.

If you have difficulty running or setting them up, we can post some screen shots here in some separate topics if need be.

Hope you get it all working.

I'm sure they approbably are on the disk.  They are just hidden so that I can't load them.  It is probably part of what the virus does to protect itself.  You can bet the computer is going back to them for a fix.  And they better have a loaner computer for me in the mean time grrrrrh.  I guess I got what I paid for with that computer place right?
