I told you it was jinxed
« on: Dec 10, 2008, 05:18:22 AM »
So what is the latest with the new used computer you ask...Now it won't let me load the family search website.  It starts listing a bunch of stuff and putting unknown source behind each thing.

I'm assuming that my java 6 update 11 is corrupted.  So I went in and uninstalled it from the control panel and now I'm downloading it again.  It's one of those programs that takes about 2 hours.  Grrrrrrrrh.  This had better work or the church is going to wait a long time for me to index any records.  Of course when I called the bishop in charge of this he sent me to a guy that didn't even bother to return my phone call.  So I can just imagine how much help he is likely to be.

There I'm done venting for now.

Well reinstalling java didn't work.  Nothing like wasting an hour.

If you still use Win 2000, not sure if it applies, haven't used win 2000 in a long time.

Try this...
  • Click start
  • Click run
  • Type "cmd" (without quotes) and press enter

Type "ipconfig /flushdns" (without quotes) then enter, reboot/restart computer.

That seems like it to me too but they wouldn't let a problem go on for this long.  It's java based and a church wide program that thousands use everyday.  No one else is having problems that I've talked to so that doesn't pan out.  I wish it had that would have saved me from having to solve the silly problem.

Actually that looks more like the loader application.  I don't see a single error there at all.  When you try to access the site, what is the error that your browser displays?

I wrapped your "program" in code tags so that the links don't show up as links.  Way too many of those in that.  The code tags can be added using the button on the post template page that has # on it.

Jim your so far over my head you might as well be standing on the empire state building.  Boy do I feel dumb.  I got as far as it being a loading problem and I agree with that.  After that I am totally lost.

I'll see if I can come up with the rest of the messages.

I went to the website and took a look and what you copied appears to be a java website launcher app.  When you click on the link, you get a dialog box that looks like this:

What happens when you click OK?

Well I added firefox to my computer and now I'm trying to load the family search index.  Cross your fingers for me.

it loads but it freezes constantly.  Now it says one of the graphics files is corrupted and it has of course frozen again.  I wonder if I'll loose all the information I've typed in if I just restart the computer again.  This is getting very obnoxious.

Java applets really can tax the resources of a machine.  If you don't have something like a Pentium 3 with about 1 Gig of memory you are going to have sluggish operations.  The key is the memory.

There is no error message.  The screen begins flickering and then it does that vertical roll type sturff where you get the same line printed over and over and then it begins putting the bottom tool bar on the top of the page in pieces and just in general has a spastic attack.

That really sounds odd. And this is on your "new" computer?

Sounds like you have picked up some kind of bug or something. Have you ran your anti-virus programs and your anti-spyware tools?

Without an error message, this site has nothing to do with your problem, Tammy.  It is confined to your computer and only you can fix it.  The same goes for you not being able to start a topic.  It actually sounds as if you have some java issues on your computer and it may be best for you to remove java completely and reinstall it.
