Dull Formica Counter Tops
« on: May 30, 2009, 07:58:49 AM »
I love my counter tops as far as the dark green marbled look but....they are dull.  They aren't dirty its just that they don't shine.  Is there anything I can do to change that?  Poly maybe or just wax the little suckers like you would a car?  I don't know.  Mop and glow?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

is it just the type of finish on them like a satin finish?  If it is I don't think you can change them.

I think someone used an abrasive cleaner on them.  They look like regular formica.

Get your some paste car wax. Something that has a cleaner in it and try a small spot to see if it don't help with the shine.

Thanks Jim, I'll give it a try.  If it doesn't work the car will appreciate it anyway.

I did a google search on resurfacing formica and all basically suggest to replace it... One even said they had a professional come out to resurface the counter tops and it looked good for only a few months and it began to crack and peel.

I do plan to replace it but that's a long term project.  And this stuff is everywhere.  Both bathrooms, the kitchen and the breakfast bar are all formica.  And it's all been damaged.

I'd go ahead and wax if it will look better for a while.  Then replace it counter tops and they dull again.

I would try the wax too. Couldn't hurt anything. Might do the trick!  My countertops are brand new (less than a year ago) and have never been "shiny". But they don't have a haze either. Hopefully it'll work for ya.

You can use 'marine spar varnish', it takes awhile to dry and stinks to high heaven but if you can ventilate...it works well. Waterproof and shiny. I've used it to redo a melamine bookcase.

That sounds like a great idea.  Will it work on a none pourous smooth surface?

I've used it on flat melamine with no trouble.

I don't know what that is.  But I'm going to put this on my to do list.  It may not get done this year but it might next year.  This year everything needs painting.

You can also sand them and give them a paint over with melamine paint....that way you'll get the color you want and at a great price.
