Gardening, anyone?
« on: Aug 04, 2006, 11:49:34 PM »
I love to garden. Vegetables or flowers, doesn't matter to me. Presently I am trying to work on my water garden by re-landscaping it and trying to turn it from pea green to clear. After it is through, it will be a memorial garden for my favorite uncle who died in 2004. He loved to fish...

After I finish with Uncle Johnny's garden, I will be working on one for my mother who died in 1999 and my favorite cousin that passed in 2005. My mother's will have angels in it and my cousin's will have roosters and chickens. Still playing with ideas in my head for theirs...

We had a bad problem with corn smut this year. Didn't get too much of a harvest after the fungus started. Boy, that stuff looks nasty! :o We told the neighbor last night that if he wanted to pick any good ears (and he could find any) that he was welcome to it.

The rest of the vegetable garden is finally dying. Can't say that I am too sorry. I have picked, watered, shelled, canned, and frozen all that I want to for this year. I am thinking about going to a pick-your-own farm to get me some tomatoes to can, though. Ours didn't do too well this year...

Anyone else like to garden out there? What projects are you working on?

I am so excited! We went to buy some flagstone/slate for the water garden today and plan on getting up early in the a.m. to install it around the pond. One step closer to having that memorial garden finished. Of course my father-in-law would think I am crazy ::) for buying rock when he would give me all I wanted. Tennessee is a little bit far to drive to get them, though! ;D

We still need to buy some more hay for mulch for the water garden and find some more plants. I think it will be really pretty when we are finished...

Yep, my back is hurting.  :o That's just from putting it in the truck.  It's still in the truck cause it was raining when we got home this evening.  Guess I'll be getting it out tomorrow.  480lb of slate.

Yeah Dad would definitely laugh at you for buying rock.  He has lots of rock in Tennessee but that is a bit far to go and get it.  I can't wait to see the pond with the rock around it.  It will look like a real water garden.

Dianna has done a great job with it.  That was the first of many she says, but lets's not mention that.

We have the rock in the waterfall area now to hide the black plastic liner. It looks so much better. Jim did a very good job of arranging the little rocks for me...

So where is the picture of the water garden so everyone can see?  Adding the gravel to the sloping pools did wonders for the green water.  I bet we can clear it right up with the addition of a box filter.

Ask, and ye shall receive...

I haven't taken one yet with the rocks added to the waterfall. Will try to do that tomorrow...

Yeah, you need some new pics as you covered the styrofoam with the plastic leaves and added the lighted lily pads since those were taken.  It sure is looking good.  I am proud of you, baby!

Introducing Samson and Delilah...

Of course, we may have two males or two females. Haven't seen any babies yet?  ;)

Great job!
I've heard of that gardening forum..... ;)
I had a small 'pond' at my last house. A titmouse(bird) drowned in it, broke my heart, sold the pond insert...
Now I live across from a stream and hear running water all the time.  ;D
I  garden too. Flowers and veggies. I keep making my perrenial island bigger, and bigger. BF wants to know where he's supposed to park when the garden takes over the whole property!!

Where's your pics, Wrennie! I have seen them at that gardening forum, but Aunt Bonnie and Jim haven't. You have some beautiful gardens!

So sorry for the little bird. I haven't had that problem. I found my pleco beside the pond one morning, though. I don't think he could have jumped out, but if a raccoon or something pulled him out, they didn't eat him...

I would like to clean out this drainage ditch beside the house to make it look more like a stream. The weed mess and the scrub trees make it a snaky place to be. No walking or wading in this water...

i have a purple one too. Is her jackmaani a dark purple? The one I have is med to light. If only I could remember varieties. I wonder if I wrote the variety in my garden notebook when I planted them. I'll have to look when I get home.

My sig. line on the garden forums is "a weed is only a plant you haven't found a use for yet". I have some johnny jump ups that bloomed 2 days ago and in with them is a 'weed' I keep pulling out of various beds. Well it had a pretty little cluster of purple flowers on it almost like a vetch flower. I guess its not a weed in my yard anymore.

I love Johnny jump ups. It's easy to see where they get their name.

If my leg ever gets better, I plan on planting those irises that I dug up before water sealing. I only have a garden wagon, a wheelbarrow, and a pallet full....

Still haven't re-planted my iris, but my leg is starting to feel a little better now. I have been itching to re-plant, but this sciatica has been a pain in the butt. Literally!

I cleaned in the sunroom yesterday and re-arranged my plants. The cardboard that I have been saving is now neatly stacked instead of just thrown in there to save for the next garden bed we start. I can't wait for Spring...

We walked around the land today killing fire-ants. I bet we killed at least a billion or two and that is not exaggerating...

I can give you some more white ones if you want.

Bonnie

Aunt Bonnie, I think all of the ones in the wheelbarrow, garden wagon, and on the pallet are white. Those are the ones you gave me a couple springs ago and they have multiplied faster than rabbits!
