My desktop crashed tonight
« on: May 09, 2009, 12:21:13 AM »
It's not been a good week.

Tonight my browser was getting sluggish or it seemed so I hit the reset button so everything could reset and the computer just hangs now trying to boot up.  I first got a boot error and then it wouldn't do anything other than loop back to the boot screen.  I guess it is time to take it back in for a check-up.  Sure hope it's not the processor.  I'm thinking it may be some memory but the fact that it won't boot makes me think the drive is bad.

Guess I will be using the laptop for a bit till I can get it to the shop.

mine crashed just a short time ago but it was a bad file that did me in.  Cost 67.00 to get it fixed plus I was without a computer for several days.  I hope yours is something simple.

At least you have a back up Jim.  Hopefully the fix is quick and easy and cheap.

I haven't taken it in yet but I suspect it's the hard drive.  The last time I upgraded, just threw in an old one that I had laying around.  If it's not that it's bad memory.  I'll take it in next week when I go back to work.

Got my computer back today.  It wasn't anything I thought, in fact I feel kind of dumb for not at least trying to fix it myself.  I had some corrupt system files and could have fixed it by doing the Windows XP repair or even might have done it with the System File Checker.  Anyway it is fixed and I donated $85 to the cause.  I'm just glad to have the laptop back in the bag for the time being.

Glad it was an easy fix Jim.  Better than a hard drive crash.

:applause:   Glad yours is fixed, it must be in the air, by big desktop, the one I usually work on went down too. It kept shutting off by itself and an error message that my CPU fan was bad, but in this model Sony, the heatsink and CPU fan comes all in one and no one sells them accept Sony (I thought). Sony no longer carries this part, but they told me to go to Amazon and put in the part# and I was lucky to find a 3rd pary vendor, the only one, that still sells this part, but they are very slow in shipping, argh!!  The computer is 6 years old.  I had it built back then,  ahead of its time as far as processor, memory, etc.. I do video editing on it and it is still a good computer worth fixing.   I am on another older computer now that is so slow, it tries my patience everyday and most days, I just give up and shut it down.   If the part doesn't work, it looks like I'll be having to order a new one.  I have a laptop, but don't think I could work on that all the time.

I guess after using the laptop for a couple of weeks I would get used to it.  My biggest problem was accidently dragging my thumb on the touch pad.  I would be typing right along but instead of at the right spot, somewhere in the middle of the paragraph because of my thumb accidently toughing the pad.  I kept looking for a way to turn the dang thing off.  It would have probably helped if I had elevated/tilted it to but I had it sitting right on my desk.

Hope you get your part in soon.
