Ingredients:

1 cup diced onion
3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp. minced garlic
2 cans whole tomatoes (28 oz. each)
2 Tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. dried basil leaves
1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
Kosher salt to taste

How to Prepare:

Saute onion in oil in a saute pan over medium-high heat until onion is soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, saute briefly. Stir in tomatoes with their juice. Crush tomatoes with a potato masher and simmer sauce for 15 minutes.

Stir in sugar, basil, pepper flakes, and pepper. Season sauce with salt. Simmer 15 minutes longer.

Tips:

If you like rustic style sauce do not crush the tomatoes as much.

If you have children who do not like to see onions, etc. in their sauce then use a blender or food processor to make the sauce smoother. The taste will remain the same.
