Building a clown
« on: Sep 28, 2009, 09:00:47 PM »
there is a story behind this... but here is how you build a clown, story will be at the end.

Start with a crocheted yoyo – (ch 6, join,  chain 3, then dc 15 in loop for a total of 16, join, chain 3, dc 1 in first “hole” and dc 2 in each of the rest of the “holes” between each of the dcs. Fasten off.

Lots of yoyos –

All the yoyos (36 or more, even number) – some connected –

Connect the yoyos by sc in each dc, using a slst to join to previous yoyo after every 8th sc.
Yoyos connected and adding pompoms –

This didn’t work so well
Head version 1 –

This is better, just a generic head off another pattern
Head version 2 –

Clowns need hats no pattern for this one –

Head and hat –

Getting there – almost done

I’m finished –

I can rest now –

now for the short version of the story... my gramma (who died 2 weeks ago) used to make these for the kids in the family.  there are 6 kids who didn't get them.  i am the only "close" relative who she taught how to crochet well enough to make them.  so, guess who's making them.  in between other things.

and, triss, thank you for inspiring me to pick back up my crochet hooks.  after i got the scarf you sent me, i've made myself 2 more, and one for each of my girls

Cute, Jenn!  How nice of you to make them for the kids that didn't get them from your grandma!

That is so cute, Jennifer... :grinnnn:

I'm glad that you are able to make them for the six grandchildren that she wasn't able to make them for...

That is so adorable!  It's good of you to make them for the kids that didn't get one.

I bet you could make a bunch of them and sell them. I've not seen anything like that before. Unique.

barb, it would cost more for me to sell them than i'd be willing to pay.  they are cheap to make, but counting all those stitches is a PAIN in the wazzoo.  and keeping up with the yoyos.  although, i will start making yoyos out of leftover yard and it will go better.  i was just in a hurry to get the first one finished.

i should have said, it took me exactly 2 weeks from start to finish, and i worked on it way more than i normally work on my crochet things.  although still mostly while riding as a passenger in the car.

Those are so adorable, Jenn!  I love the little fella.  And you've got a sweet touching story to go with them.

I absolutely LOVE the clown.  So glad I inspired you to take up the hook again!  I cannot wait to try a clown and hope I can find some variegated yarn in my stash.  These will go great with my afghans along with the octopods and bunnies!

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

triss, gramma made hers with solid thread, or variegated or whatever she had.  she just used up scraps to make the yoyos.  then used one color to unify them.  i just got variegated because i couldn't afford to buy a bunch of colors while we were in florida (especially with so much here at home).  so i thought the variegated would almost achieve the same effect.  the girls liked it better!

and thank you for the kind words.

Way cool Jiffy.  Let me know when you buy the stuff.  Aubry will love them.
