I really need to watch my sodium intake, so I picked up some NoSalt the other day at the grocery store. I got home, opened it, and tasted. It has a little bite with an awful aftertaste, to me. Jim tasted it and said it tastes just like salt, but he is not a salt connoisseur like I am.

Do any of you use a different salt substitute that tastes just like salt? I have got to do something to get my sodium intake under control. They are too expensive to keep buying and then not liking them... rolleyes1

I am afraid I cannot help you there Dianna... I just do not use salt in very much and I do not add it to my plate once I serve myself something.

I have never used one, Dianna.  I hope you find one that works for you!  Wish  I could be of more help.  Maybe you wouldn't notice the aftertaste when it is on food and not trying it plain?  Maybe you already did that.

What have I gotten myself into?

I tried it on food this morning and it made the food taste like I added salt.  Dianna normally salts the eggs when she cooks but didn't this morning so that's why I tried it.  Normally I don't add salt to anything except potatoes and then not much.

I don't use much salt myself. A small salt shaker will last me a year or more. Wasn't always that way. Dianna, once you have gone without it for a while, you won't miss it. Use other seasonings to make your food taste good.

It has that after taste to me as well, Dianne. I could never use it. I did try a herb based seanoning that was better than no salt, but not nearly as good as salt. Accent tastes pretty good. It is lower in sodium than salt.

Dianna, do you actually crave salt? Or just really like it?

Sarah, I wasn't much of a salt eater for years. Back then my blood pressure was super low. I ate salt to bring it up to normal to increase my blood volume because of mitral valve prolapse. I guess all of the years I spent trying to get a normal blood pressure backfired on me when I got older... razberry

Megan told me there is a better substitute than the one I have, but she doesn't remember the name of it. She will try to find out about it and let me know...

I eat salt on everything. The only fruit I don't salt is a banana. Blush I bought some Granny Smith apples tonight at Walmart. Guess I will find out how the NoSalt tastes with them... wink5

The NoSalt still tastes nasty to me. I had to wash it off my apple after I tasted it. I decided to read the label to see what was in it and was surprised to find out that people with heart disease aren't supposed to eat it without consulting their doctor first. Shocked Guess I won't be eating any more of it...  happy

Sure wish Megan could remember what the other was, but I guess I had better ask the doctor before I try to lower my salt intake now since I read the warning on the NoSalt... wink5

Oh boy, that is not good Dianna.  I think you may have to learn to like all your fruits and stuff without salt.  It may be the safest way to reduce rather than putting any strange chemicals into your body.

I don't know if I could get used to not salting a Granny Smith, Triss... Sad

Thank you, Jessica. NewHug I saw that in the grocery store, but the price for the size container put me off of it. If it tastes like real salt, though, it would be worth every penny. I will ask the doctor about it and let you know when I try it, if I am allowed to... grinnnn

I know it would be a very difficult change Dianna but a good one for your overall health.  Just try one thing at a time without salt or substitute and see if you can get used to it.  Reserve the salt or substitute for the thigns you absolutely cannot live without salt on.

That is what I have been trying to do, Triss. I didn't salt anything for breakfast yesterday, and really didn't miss it. The sausage and grits already had enough sodium in them for me to do without the salt shaker for breakfast... BigGrin

I am wondering if the doctor would even want me to give up the salt with the blood volume issues? I guess I had better check with him before I throw the salt shaker into the garbage can... wink5

I just want to be healthy... BigGrin

We don't salt our food and Adam has finally stopped noticing.  But if I ever serve something that I have salted he just raves and raves and raves about it.  I probably salt things a few times a year - I think he must be more sensitive to the flavor than I am.
