Dianna, our cake was on separate pedestals too.
Sarah, I've never known anyone to get a break down on pricing for a wedding cake. Give them a flat price.

flat price, or price per invited guest. typically $2 and up. so if they want a cake that will feed 100, then they need to pay $200 plus embellishments. so for fondant it is an extra dollar a person, the flowers an extra $50, etc.

SOrry to leave you hanging! I asked how much the bride was expecting to spend and was told $200 or less. Well, I know I couldn't have made that cake for under $200 so I told them that they would need to find someone else. I hid behind the excuse that I freaked out over my sister's cake, that the cake has to travel 3 hours by car to it's final place, and I just didn't see it making it all the way up there without falling over.

Fondant cakes really drive up the price...I bake cakes at 100% mark up but have never made a fondant one yet. I was so cheap that I baked my own wedding cake.
If you can get some used cake pans...it's a nice little side business to have.

click on your picture and then click properties. Paste the address from properties and add [img]http://and the front and[ /img] at the end. Don't leave spaces between the img's and the address.

Tamara, that is a lovely cake! I really like it! I can't do much with frosting. I'm frosting-challenged. For me and my skill set (or lack thereof) it's much easier to mess around with fondant. I've been baking cakes for about 3 years and each time I made a cake, I always had enough money to buy a pan with it. And it never hurts to have 40% off coupon either. Thankfully, I have a full set of round and square pans, along with some larger rectangles for big sheet cakes.

I fixed the link...Thank you Sarah.
Fondant hasn't really caught on here, people don't care much for the taste...carrot cake with cream cheese icing seems to be the cake of choice here for weddings now.
Although mine(in the pic) was lemon cake with butter cream icing.

Cakes here are expensive. I can't imagine having one special order for $200.00. It would be a cupcake size.
I don't like carrot cake. I like carrots and I like cake but I eat them separately.

Store-bought fondant is revolting but homemade Marshmallow fondant is much, much tastier. This is what I use and I get very good reviews of it.
