I just could never take the taste of canola oil. I didn't like it when I tried it at home (looking for a healthy alternative). And I do not like it in restaurants.
I have taste issues with olive oil. But different. It is good in some stuff but not in others. And the smell of it hot isn't appealing to me. I looked for coconut oil in my grocery store and it wasn't available. I will have to look further afield.

I thought canola oil was supposed to be healthier for you!  yikes

I didn't like the taste of it in some foods either, Tina. I haven't tried the olive oil yet. Now, I am hoping that peanut oil is good for me... unsure

I don't know anything about peanut oil.  I hope Sarah does.  I like olive oil.  I'm going to try coconut oil.

I've never looked into peanut oil. I'll do some poking around.

I'm glad you like this topic. I had no idea anyone would be intrested, or I would have started it sooner.  Blush

Here is a link to a very long, dry breakdown of fats:

Boring reading, but good for info.

Quote
Peanut Oil contains 48% oleic acid, 18% saturated fat and 34% omega-6 linoleic acid. Like olive oil, peanut oil is relatively stable and, therefore, appropriate for stir-frys on occasion. But the high percentage of omega-6 presents a potential danger, so use of peanut oil should be strictly limited.

Guess that peanut oil isn't that good for you, either... Sad

It's better that canola oil.  grinnnn

Remember, you are going to hear conflicting nutritional info. Even among doctors, there are different schools of thought. Most doctors are still working off info from last decade...and then coconut oil was a no-no in mainstream science.

It's something you are going to have to decide for yourself.

Sheri, I accidentally used olive oil spray to grease a pan the I put rice krispies in and they tasted terrible so I have never tried putting it in baked goods.

I've always heard that coconut oil is bad, really bad.  I've never used it.  But it's really the best oil?  I also heard or read before that olive oil isn't good unless the pan is heated before the oil is put in it or something like that.  Too much information.

I meant rice krispie bars up there.

There is a lot of info, Sheri, and it is hard to know what to do and what not to do.

It is hard to keep the facts straight. I bet Dianna's Dr's are telling her to avoid cholesterol and things. Where cholesterol is only a problem when it sticks to your veins in the form of plaque. The way I read it if you eat the right cholesterol with or in the right items it is just used the way it is supposed to be used and flushed away. If you cut back your body makes its own and that is where the cholesterol builds up in the blood supply? I just read this in amongst all of the links I've followed in Sarah's various threads so don't ask me to go back and find it again.
This is where real foods come in. Although butter does contain cholesterol it doesn't appear to raise cholesterol blood levels when eaten. Or maybe the was when eaten with other real foods.

And that is why I encourage each of you to do your own reading and research...there is SO much info out there, and so much of it is confliction info.

I choose to use coconut oil. I started slow, because I was scared of it. The more I have used it, and the less of others, the better I feel. My acne has cleared up, ecxept for the occasional zit. That in itself is a miracle.

How do you know you're getting the truth?  One article says one thing and the next says the opposite.  Do you just try it and if it makes you feel better go with it?

I check their facts, and their resources. Most site studies...so I read them, too. And then I try it. And judge for myself how I feel.

I have really bad skin. Wonder if coconut oil would help that? What about wrinkles... giggle

Does coconut oil make your fried foods taste "fruity", Sarah?

There is so much information in all the links that I can't process it. I think I read some of what Tina was talking about with the cholesterol and came up with the same thoughts, but it is scary with all the conflicting information.

I was looking for transfats when I scanned that article. Did I miss it or is that the same as the polyunsaturated fats? I am so confused... stars

Dianna, I read that there is refined and unrefined coconut oil.  Refined takes away the chance of it tasting like coconut.  That is what I read anyway.

Dianna, foods fried with refined coconut oil are the "cleanest" I have ever tasted. It has really no flavor at all.

Do you think refined coconut oil would be safe for me being allergic to coconut?

I am afraid I will run into the olive oil taste when I use the olive oil. I want to taste my food, not what I fry it in. That is why I went back to veggie oil from canola... Wacko

I forgot all about corn oil. My mother used to use that while we were growing up...

Refined, refined, refined...gotta remember refined. BigGrin Sometimes I do remember when I repeat it enough... wink5
