Annual Visit to Rahn's Nursery
« on: May 01, 2010, 01:54:11 PM »
Rahn's (pronounced "ron's") is a commercial nursery/grower that lets local folks wander through and buy things.  And, they tend to be generous with cuttings if you don't want a plant the size of what they have.  Ellie and I go there every year around this time, usually a little earlier.  It is our annual "mother's day" thing.  Just she and I.  She started it as a way for she and I to spend time together when we were not getting along so well, and has continued it even though we get along great now.

I took a bunch of pictures, and will be happy to explain what they are if you have questions.  I will say, there is one picture that doesn't do justice to the plant, and it is a plant they do not sell.  EVER.  It was Mrs. Rahn's mother in law's, and she gives cuttings to those who ask (me  :yesssss: )  It is a cactus of some kind, but not any kind I've ever seen.  It was beautiful, and that does not do justice to it.

Ok, here they go, in groups of three.

When you first get there, you can get a wagon, or they have the large, flat bed, grate type wheeled platforms.  but parking under the pecan tree is a must so you don't fry your car.

this plant was obviously left in the nursery pot too long, but is thriving. i thought it was cool.

notice that huge peace lily?  they don't even sell them!  that one just "lives there" and has been there every year i've been.

while they have mostly garden, bedding, and hanging plants, they also have specimen and vegetable plants.

in the last three pictures, first is Mrs. Rahn and Ellie.  They went back because Mrs. Rahn said Ellie didn't get the right butterfly bushes.  the ones ellie got were small and mrs. rahn said she should get the bigger ones and get her money's worth.  she took ellie to get them.

the next picture is the little house that mrs. rahn uses for an office.

and the last picture is the nice seating area they have under the pecan tree to rest when you have tromped through all the green houses!  you can see 5 of the green houses in that picture, but there are 4 more in that area that you can't see.  we had fun.  and amazingly, got out for under $100 :yikes:

Very nice stuff. Thank you for sharing the pictures.
Did you wear your sunscreen and stay in the shade?

i wore spf 85, sheri's sun hat, and stayed mostly in the shade.  you can see that most of the green houses have shade cloth on them.  so we walked in them.  the ones that aren't hoop houses are connected by interior doors.  the others are in one, out, and back in again.

You inspired me (maybe made me jealous but I prefer the sound of being inspired). I tossed Ted into the car and we took a trek off to a favorite nursery of mine. I checked the mileage and it was a little under 30 miles each way. So I don't get there often. And a stop at McD's for Ted before coming home and we have a happy family. No pictures. And they were busy. So I didn't disturb them with finding one of my wants.
I was looking for another ceanothus. It will wait. I am not in a hurry for one.
I did buy a couple of jacob's ladders and fuchsias. And baby's breath ground cover for the 'floor' of the butterfly garden. It only grows about 4 inches tall but spreads 24 inches or more wide. Something to try.
And a couple of gifts for future birthday months.

i should have said that this particular nursery is an authorized "proven winner" grower, so these plants were "brand" name.  all of hers were in the purple coloring except the impatiens and the geraniums.

and yes, she is.  she also got a hydrangea today, and i promised to dig her up some confederate jasmine for one of her trellises.  the landscaping was fairly nice anyway, all but one misplaced palm tree.  i'll take pictures when i'm there tomorrow.
