Asiatic Lilies
« on: May 30, 2010, 06:31:29 AM »
I didn't know that asiatic lilies could be propagated this way.

I took six leaves from an Asiatic lily by gently pulling them off in a downward motion to purposely retain a small amount of stem tissue at the base of each leaf. This didn't hurt the mother plants at all.  Then I treated the leaves with rooting hormone and put them in cups with about 2 inches of sand.  Then I filled an additional inch of sand over the treated ends of the leaves.  This helped them to stand upright and covered the area for the bulb to form.  I fit three cuttings in each cup.  To check on the cuttings add enough water to loosen the sand before raising.  It takes one to two years before they will bloom.  But within a month the bulb will have begun to form.

For how much new bulbs cost, it's GREAT to know this works!  :good2:

Even better....there is a bucketfull on my front porch left over from prom. :dancingbunny: I'll be trying this today.

a bucket full!  I bet there are a bunch of star gazers.  Those are really pretty.  Mine are still babies and there are three.  When they get to adult size I may try this.

Sadly, they are all solid bright white...but they would look absolutely stunning in a moon garden. :)

they certainly wood.  The article I was reading says that depending on the cultivator they actually bloom at different times.  So if you had all the right kinds they could have some blooming all the time.

Doesn't someone have a lilly flower bed with all different kinds?

I used to have, Tammy. But the critters eventually found it and they love lily bulbs. I had asiatic and oriental mostly with a few trumpets thrown in. They did a whole season of bloom for me from mid-spring through late summer. I had some daylilies in there for their contributions as well. The lasted for about 5 years before they were discovered and the critters (mostly gophers) braved bypassing the society garlic I surrounded them with as a deterrent.
I have a whole new oriental raised bed going now. But no blooms yet in there. Rabbits and squirrels have found that but I am working on getting rid of those.

I'm sorry you lost your old one.  And I hope you have luck dissuading the new pests from bothering your new one.

Gardening is like that, Tammy. It is an ongoing and ever-changing thing. I have told many people that I have killed at least as many plants as I have living, probably more. I don't cry over most of it. I just work on doing more.
Your 10 year plan is good. But it is going to change and alter as things go on. But that is also part of the fun of gardening.

here's a picture of the red asiatic lillies that used to be on my hill until DOT cut down my hill.

I moved them to a pot and this year they bloomed just as yellow as could be.  Explain that.

You know that's one of the things I like about annuals.  Not only do they bloom for a long time but they give you a chance to change the look of the garden without having to do massive transplanting and risking loosing expensive perennials.

Really?  They changed colors.  That's cool.  At least if you like yellow it is.

Yes yellow as could be.  At first glance I thought they were some type of daylillie coming up in the pot but nope.  Should have taken a picture.  Yellow is my favorite color but I liked the red a lot.

That is very odd, Sheri. But I'm glad you like yellow.

I for one, LOVE white lilies.  I think they look awesome against our brick house.  Really *pop*, if ya know what I mean.  Then again, I'm a sucker for all things lily.  I'm gonna have to try this next year, Tammy.  Right now, I'd forget about them, or something bad would happen.  Best to wait until life calms down a bit (does it ever do that??).

I like white flowers.  I think they make a big statement in the garden.
