Triss' Houseplants
« on: Jun 08, 2010, 07:55:48 PM »
Almost all of my houseplants survived 2 moves and tons of neglect over the last 6 months.  They are all adapting really well to the new house and are growing nicely but none more than my remaining African Violets.  In this house I have the perfect spot for them to grow and they are absolutely thriving.  Two of them have flowered and all of them have doubled in size since we moved in here.

The other thing I figured out when I watered them yesterday is that each one was a gift from Sarah and all started out as single leaf starts from her own African Violets.

This one had not bloomed in the many years I have had it but blessed me with a bloom opening up today... there are many more on the plant as well.  It is called S. Bauble

This one is the only one of my AV's that has consistently bloomed for me over the years.  It is called Rob's Gundaroo.

This one looks like buds are starting to form.  It is called Firehouse.

And finally, this one is just growing and that makes me happy too!  It is called Hawaii Blue Electric.

I have never been able to grow AVs. I think I over water them. My kids' grandmother used to grow tons of them without any problems.

These AV pots would make it easier for you to grow them, the plants will take in what they need and you just have to make sure the bottoms of the pots are filled with water.

They are made special for AVs? They keep the roots out of the water? That was always my problem I'm sure. The plants would seem to be too wet and get mush, then just die. I don't think I explained that too well, but I'm sure you know what I'm trying to say.

Oh I know exactly what you mean... that is what happened to all of mine prior to these pots.

This is what the pot looks like

And here it is taken apart.  You only put water in the lower part of the pot and since the part the plant is in is an unglazed ceramic, it will pull water to the plant as needed.

Now those are cool! I never saw or heard of such a pot. I'll have to find me some and then try my hand at AVs again!!  So... where do you find those kinds of pots? Are they actually called AV pots?

I think the first one I received was a gift.  I have picked up the others at WalMart or KMart I am sure.  I will keep my eye out for them here.  I do not know if they are actually called AV pots or not.

I will look for them. I don't see a whole lot of folks growing AVs around here. But lots of folks did when I lived in Oregon. They were in everyone's window sills. Well, everyone's but mine. lol

Well that is where mine are now, in a south facing window that does get some direct setting sun.  So far so good based on how pretty they are right now.  I need more now to fill up my empty planters.

AV pots are really cool. As long as you check the water once a week, your AV should thrive...:)

Believe me Jenn, I have had my share of problems.  I was just looking back to try and figure out when I got these.  I visited Sarah in 2006.  From the pictures I see, she sent me home with more than a dozen African violet starts.  Of them all, I have these 4 remaining.

I have never tried on AV.  Maybe soon.  I will keep my eyes open for one of those pots.

Well that makes me feel a little better, I guess.  I am looking forward to starting babies this summer as well.  What color is the Firehouse one?

Let them get good and healthy first, with at least 4 good rings of leaves. Then you will have better success.

As for me, I have 6 healthy mother plants, and leaves down for another 20 or so...

Good luck with them.  Is the perfect peach the smaller variety like the gundaroo?

Gundaroo is a mini trailer, perfectr peach is a standard mini...it's pretty cute. When it settles into it's new pot I'll make some babies.  :)
