Succulents
« on: Jun 10, 2007, 05:29:38 PM »
I know that a lot of people here have some gorgeous succulents, so I started this thread exclusively for those plants.

I have a tipped-over wheelbarrow full of a variety of Sedum & Hens & Chicks, but haven't paid much attention to it yet this year. (It's on my "weed" list.)

Meanwhile, my ice plant had been in the top of a bucket that I used last year for an up-side-down tomato & it was just gorgeous... started out as a handful-sized start, & took over the whole area in no time at all.  I forgot about it & left it hanging outside on the deck all winter, & thought for sure that I'd lost it to the inclement freezes we had, cuz the whole plant took on a translucent appearance.  Much to my surprise, it started greening up again & bounced back to life!

I tore it apart & put some in a planter in early May, for my Mom's birthday, & repotted almost all the rest of it in a basket & gave it to my sister for hosting a family reunion when Shelly came from Maui for a visit. I talked to them this past week, & they both said that theirs are blooming like crazy!

This is what I saved out for myself & we'll probably use it in our up-side-down tomato bucket again this year.

I have a succulent ground cover that I've never really been able to identify to my satisfaction.  It is cream colored near where the leaf meets the stem, then a spring green for the leaf until you get to the tip that turns pink during warm sunny weather.  It blooms by putting up stems from the end of it's branch and then it puts out pink blooms.  I love it I call it my catepillar because the leaves and branches will arch toward the sun.

I put it outside today because the weather is hot enough that it should enjoy it out there now.

Sounds really pretty, duh. I wish your camera hadn't quit on you so we could get it identified for you...

Meanwhile, I have been googling the description and came up with Phuopsis Crucianella stylosa. Is this what your plant looks like, duh?  :SmileyQmarks:

That's a really cool looking flower but that's not my plant.  it's somewhere in the cressula family I think.  And the flower is a 5 petalled simple affair.

The closest I have been able to come to identifing it is the scientific name:  Dudleya gnoma McCabe, common name:   Dudleya 'White Sprite'  but I'm not real sure this is accurate.  It's just the closest I've found.

I sure hope you can get your hands on a camera soon, Duh... some of us are still waiting to see your succulents!

I finally got my succulents weeded & remembered to take a pic...

Almost everything in the wheelbarrow put up flowers last year... some of them were pretty weird looking, then those died off. (That's what the blank spots are about.)  So, it's not looking as lush as it has in the past, but it'll come back, I assume.

Notice the Juniper "octopus" legs behind the wheelbarrow. He needs a trim this year.
