Researching Graveyards

A good place to begin researching a cemetery would be at the caretakers office, if they have one. They might be able to furnish you with maps or other information. Also the local funeral homes might have some useful information, especially if it's a small town.

With today's internet age, I usually begin any search for anything with the internet.  Most times there is some information, even though it might not be exactly what you are looking for.  I use Google most of the time but the other search engines will give you different data so it doesn't hurt to try one of them from time to time. 

If the cemetery is on private property, it becomes a bit more difficult.

Most privately owned cemeteries would be family plots. Family plots were commonly found in the old South, where plantation living made it impractical to take the bodies for miles to the church yard or town cemetery. As the towns grew, some of the family plots were absorbed by larger cemeteries or the bodies were moved to new locations as the town grew around them. Some were built over or lost all together, leading to some gruesome finds in later years. In this wonderful South that we live in some homes still have small fenced in family plots.
