Lilian Jackson Braun always get me going on vocabulary and on increasing my reading list.  So I thought you all might enjoy the brain stretching with me.  Here is the way I see it.  We'll add words, definitions, connotations, and word history if known.  Does it sound like fun?  Well we'll see.  Here is the start of my list.

Architrave - A beam resting directly on a column, or a bank of molding around a door.
Apocryphally - Doubtfully.
Codex - A manuscript volume of ancient origin as a greek or latin classic, or the scriptures, a body of laws.

I'm reading, "Sherlockian," and if for no other reason I'm loving it for his word choices.

tautologies - A useless repetition of the same idea or meaning in different words; needless redundancy;

tammy, i like words too.  there are several "word of the day" websites, websters has one, so does the baltimore sun.  but my favorite is by wordsmith.  the word of the day there is always on a theme for the week, you can look back at the other words for that week, and the origins of the words are explained.  i'll find the link for you.

My internet server does that too...has a word of the day.

chiaroscuro - The treatment and distribution of light and shade in a piece of artwork; a painting, sketch, or woodcut using only light and shade; an artist's way of using light and shade.

Interesting he used it to describe the lost of light and shade on sidewalks when London when from gas street lights to electric.  I'm glad I looked it up.  I'm sure glad I'll never had to pronounce it.

Omnibus - a collection of stories on the same theme.  I never knew that definition and it was giving me problems when I looked up bibliographys of favorite authors.

I added the RSS feed to the Wordsmith website to our portal page.  It's between the Ghost Stories and Recent Topics blocks.
