Jim's weather station - Ambient WS-2080
« on: Apr 04, 2011, 10:31:41 PM »
I took some pictures the other day after responding to a few questions from William about my weather station.  It is an Ambient WS-2080.  After reading all the reviews online I came to the conclusion that this one was the most bang for the buck.  It comes with all the instruments and a short pole to mount them all on.  You have to either provide or purchase a pole that the cluster mounts on.  It is entirely wireless.  What I like about this one is there is only ones set of batteries to change.  All the instruments connect to the transmitter that is under the large white radiation shield and it contains the only batteries.  It comes with a much smaller radiation shield but I bought the larger version because the temperature is more accurate with the larger one in climates like what we have.  The smaller one would have worked fine for areas that don't typically get as hot as we do here.

The receiver is on my desk and connects to the computer through a USB port.

I'll add more to the topic tomorrow.

The station comes with some free software called EasyWeather.  This software allows you to use a computer to set all the parameters for the weather station.  Here is a link to their website.

http://proweatherstation.com/easyweather/easyweather.htm

This provides some neat statistics and keeps a number of data files on your PC.  It did not support uploading of the data to the web though so I found Cumulus by SandySoft.

http://sandaysoft.com/products/cumulus

With this software you can upload your data to something like Weather Wunderground and Personal Weather Stations with just a few settings in the software.  Or you can design your own using the templates that come with Cumulus and upload the updates by automated FTP jobs.

Here is a video I found on YouTube before I bought my weather station.  You can see the difference in the size of the radiation shield.  I think the guy mentions that there is a bigger one.

It's a lot fancier than licking your finger and holding it up in the air to see which way the wind is blowing.  Is his mounted on a tree?  Won't that mess up the rain gauge part of it?  I want one.  I have a plain old rain gauge that I love but I'd like a fancy one.

No, it's in front of the tree.  I would think that might not be the best spot but you never know what kind of yard he has.  Mine is out in the open.

Here's the link to where I got mine.  They sell lots of different ones but for the money this one is top notch.  And I seem to have been mistaken about the price.  It's $109.95.  Even better.

So what do you look for when the weather is not rainy?  :rain3:

Do those swamp frogs know any other songs?

The frogs do know other songs. The sounds they make in this swamp are SPOOKY. They get so loud sometimes that the dogs bark at them. There's one croaker behind the house that just lives to make our Jackwieller (Spade) bark. I just wonder what she would do if she saw him/her.?

:ScratchHead: When it's not raining, I look for snakes. Bill brought home a nice copperhead on the 26th of Sept. I have it in the freezer with the cotton mouth. I already have the Timber Rattler on the wall.

Opened the door this morning to Let Eeyore out and there were 4 deer by the mailbox and a squirrel working on the acorns beside the house. I guess I could say I watch for the animals to give me signs of what is to come with the weather.

We sometimes hear the frogs here too, and they can get quite loud.  We enjoy sitting out on the porch listening to the sounds of the country until the mosquitoes run us in.  At out house, that's about 8:30PM.

:yikes: Snakes!  Thanks goodness we haven't seen many snakes here.  Other than the copperhead that Dianna and Angel saw earlier this year.  Our neighbors see them all the time but they don't have as much cleared area between the house and the property boundaries as we do.  It's from 300 to 500 feet from our house to the woods, so they would have to cross quite a bit of open, mowed land to get to the house.

I enjoy watching the deer as long as they aren't eating my crowder peas.  Thank goodness they didn't find them this year but they have tore them up in years past.  I put a solar powered electric fence around the garden and hang pie pans for noise to keep them out.   :hobbyhorse:

Watching the animals is probably a pretty good indicator of what the weather is going to do.

Bee keepers say the bees tell them all sorts of things about the weather.
