Replying to topics continued - after updating to FF 5.0.1
« on: Jul 18, 2011, 08:06:17 AM »
Quote from: Jim
I use Firefox as well and don't have that issue.  Using XP Pro here at work and Windows 7 at home.  What virus program are you using?
XP Pro, free avast.

But, see this post http://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/index.php/topic,2143.msg146849.html#msg146849

It's definitely not SMF.  Are you using the site scanner function in avast?  As I said earlier, I use Firefox exclusively and have not seen the issue that you have.  Google Chrome is another alternative to IE.  I'm an IE hater as well but do keep it around to test things.

Even starting a new topic result in the same thing. When I view topics smileys are working correctly. Same Avast settings for years, just think its Firefox 5.0.1, I had latest version 3 previously and worked fine, updated to FF 5.0.1 few days ago. And IE is only used to update Windows.

One more thing I noticed are whacky in reply or new topic, menus (file, edit, etc) are flaky as well when hovering.

Edit: menus are fine when not replying to existing topics or starting a new topic.

Believe without a doubt FF 5.0.1 is the blame.

I am using FF5.0 and have the same problem with smileys being really slow.

This topic is better suited in the Computer Clues forum.

At least someone else is experiencing similar.

I moved it there.    I'm using FF 5.0 and don't have the issue at all.  I'm wondering if it is a problem that I ran into once after updating.  My preferences file got corrupt and the only way to fix it was to remove it manually.  I'm not sure if that was one of the symptoms though.

Gonna wait and see what happens next update. Thanks for moving, Jim.

Add: even after submitting post it lags.

You know, now that you mention it, it did start after installing all those updates the other night, although FF was not one of the updates.

Post testing in IE8, and everything is working like it should for the most part. The cursor focus in post is acting strange in IE8.

Confused now, its either a most recent Windows update or FF 5.0.1

I usually figure things out, but this time will wait on the next FF update.

The focus (where you start typing that is) in post may be a IE8 thing, all the issues with FF 5.0.1 not happening in IE8.

Interesting.  Might be worth doing some research with Google to see if anyone else has noticed this.  Might help nail down which update it was.  I am a bit leary of the Microsoft Updates lately.  Got one for Windows 7 that completely disabled the USB mouse and keyboard.  Only way around it was to restore back to just before the update and in my case that was the day I took the machine out of the box.  It wasn't fun!

No change, it takes up to 3 minutes to post messages.

Still going to wait and see what happens with newer Firefox 5 releases.

And I still have no idea what is causing it.  I just posted one and it took about 5 seconds.  Have you tried turning off some of the things that Avast does?  If you are using the link scanner or page scanner it could be slowing things down.  I have Avast on my weather station computer but haven't done much with it but install it.

All the smileys are barely moving when I am in reply mode (or preview), and it takes longer than usual to post. Really one of the main reasons I rarely use the smileys. If I'm just reading, everything is fine. Or if I am doing the quick reply the post goes fast.

Barb, are you using FF 5.0 as well?

I use FireFox 5 at home and at work and haven't noticed any issues.  At work I'm on XP Professional and at home I have XP Home and Windows 7 Home Premium.  No issues with any of those.

I am using FF 5.0 and Windows& on the laptop. I will have to check the desktop to see if it is actually a problem there. I don't normally access the site through my desktop these days.

ok, I am on my desktop. When in reply mode the icons are only slightly slow, as is everything on this computer (it's old), but they move much faster than on the laptop, and fast enough to tell what each one is.  On the laptop, I have to hover over the smiley to be sure what it is as they are almost frozen.  I am running FF 4.0.1 on the desktop.

Has to be something in your set-up.  Are you using the laptop like Dianna's?  I don't remember hearing her say anything about it but she hasn't used it much either.  That one will be easy for me to test.

Yup. Using the the one like Dianna's. The difference between the LT and DT is the version of FF. Oh and the LT has Windows7, the DT is XP.  I could upgrade FF on the DT to see if it does the causes the same problem if you like.

And am just now checking. The problem doesn't exist with IE8.

Something else I didn't mention is that the transparency in the games is gone when in FF.  Like when I'm playing Yatzee, the dice roll inside black squares.

OK, now I see what you are seeing.  It's definitely a FireFox issue, but I haven't figured out why it works fine on my desktop.  It could be related to the processor speed and or the graphics card.  I can confirm that the annimation is definitely slow using FF on Dianna's laptop too so it's not your set-up Barb and is probably not William's.

I'll continue to look for a solution on the FireFox support site.
