I bought it...now what do I do with it?
« on: Nov 09, 2011, 09:13:55 PM »
I got a manure spreader at the auction.  Now the question is how do I use it?  Can I use it for seed and weed?  That's kind of what I had it mind.  If so do I just fill it and push it over the area I want to cover?

There are settings on most to spread exactly what is needed depending on the size of whatever you are spreading. Find a brand name on yours if you can and look it up online. Most things have an online manual these days. It will give you a better idea of what you are doing with it.

Most all of those I have seen need to be pulled with a small lawn tractor.  I've never seen one that you can push without some type of machine.  Are you sure it's not a fertilizer spreader?

Isn't manure fertilizer? :ScratchHead:

Yes, but it takes a different kind of spreader than a fert that is manufactured in a granular form. You can go buy Scott's fert for instance and a Scott spreader. You set it for whatever settings it tells you to then push away. Those are good for spreading grass seed too.
There are manure spreaders of all kinds. I have one to drag behind a golf cart or a small tractor. It chops up the chunks before spraying it out onto whatever you are spreading it on. I need a new blade for it.

Absolutely!  It's the best kind.  But you don't want to stand behind a manure spreader when it is being operated as it will be quite messy.

Well this doesn't have a blade and it has a handle so I don't think it is meant to go behind a vehicle.  They said it was a manure spreader but it's not impossible that they made a mistake.  The inside of the bucket has a plastic tube that spins around.  I don't see anywhere to adjust the size of the hole but I'll look again.

Definitely sounds like a broadcast spreader.  Those can normally be used for fertilizer or seeds as Tina said.  Depending on how old it is, it may not have an adjustment.  Without an adjustment, I guess you regulate the coverage by how fast you walk pushing it.  The slower you walk, the heavier the coverage.

There are two basic kinds of walk behind spreaders that I know of. One is a broadcast that kind of shoots the seeds or feed out in front of it in a wedge shape. I have never really messed with those kind. So I am a little useless.
The other is a drop spreader which has holes along the bottom under a stirrer/tumbler that keeps the stuff loose. It drops the contents straight down instead of spraying. The size of the holes determines on the amount spread. The adjustment for that is usually on the side near the bottom, outside. It could be as simple as something that slides a fraction one way or the other to make the holes a maximum or close them up completely.

I found the lever.  I guess it's the broadcast kind because it only has holes right in the center and there is a sleeve that looks like it might move to cause them to get bigger or smaller.  You guys have been great about helping me understand what I have gotten.  I look forward to using it.
