Jim and Dianna's Garden -2012
« on: May 06, 2012, 08:57:42 PM »
Well, after a really late start this year we finally have a few things planted.  On Saturday we got 14 tomato plants in the ground.  One is a Roma plant and one is a cherry tomato, the other 12 are Park's Whoppers.  Hopefully we will have some fresh tomatoes in about 65 days.

I planted 6 hills of summer squash.  I had 3 and Dianna wanted 3 more so we would have plenty to share.  That's about half what we planted last year.

We also set out 2 pepper plants, one red and one orange.

The ground has been so dry here, but we did get .20 of rain last night so that should help the squash seeds germinate and get the sets off to a good start.

I'll try to add some pictures later this week.

I've got the rest of the garden ready as well as the corn patch but need to go by the seed store and see if I can get a variety of white sweet corn that is resistant to the corn smut that we get every year.

I started this topic because it's an easy way to track when I planted things.

We got the corn planted last night.  I ended up with Silver King which is supposed to be a bit more resistant to the smut.  I guess we'll see.

Planted some okra for Aunt Bonnie and one row of cucumbers.  Then added 4 rows of dimpled brown crowder peas and 4 rows of dixie lee cowpeas.

Still have plenty of room for Desi's carrots.  Not sure how well they will do in the heat but she is welcome to bring them on.

I'll try to get some pictures before the end of the week.

I never even knew there was such a thing as Silver King.   Should have known there was a King to go with the Queen.

Isn't it too hot for peas?  Or is that just green peas?

We have always planted our peas during this time, Sheri. Maybe the green peas are different from the cow peas and the crowders?

Yes, Megan loves to help with the garden when she is here. :grinnnn: Getting her here can sometimes be a problem though since she has moved to Sumter... :(

Actually the dimpled brown crowder and the dixie lee are both cowpeas.  They like the soil temperature to be a consistent 65° before they will germinate.  The seed will rot in cooler soil.  You must be thinking about sweetpeas Sheri.  They like the cool earth.

And I don't care for snaps in my peas.  I like them all shelled.  Snaps are good in green beans.

Got a chance today to take some pictures of the garden.  It is a bit cloudy out today and cool but after the rain everything is growing, including the weeds.

Here's the tomatoes, 2 pepper plants, squash and Dianna's maple trees.

Two shots of the garden where the peas, okra, cucumbers and gourds are.

Here's my 4 rows of corn.

Looks like my garden will be a bust this year.  With all the rain we have had and the broken tiller, the weeds/grass has gotten ahead of me.  I tried to run the new tiller through it yesterday and that was a bust.  I eventually got the mower out, put on the bagger and mowed between the rows.  I was going back to try the tiller again but the rain caught up with me again.

I did get the tiller through my corn and it doesn't look too bad.  I even got the majority of it hoed out after using the tiller.  Just didn't get the fertilizer side-dressed as planned before the rain came yesterday.

The tomatoes and squash don't look too bad either.  Water was standing out there after the rain though.

We got .78 inches of rain yesterday which brings us to over 2 inches this month.  They are saying we will get another 1.5 inches in the next two days.

don't give up yet Jim.  If it doesn't look too bad it isn't too late.

My regular garden spot has 2 rows of okra (for Aunt Bonnie) and 1 row of cucumbers, and 8 rows of peas.  On one end we planted 3 hills of gourds just to see what we would get.  I mowed between the rows in the garden because the weeds/grass is coming faster than the stuff I planted.  I think the peas are just a little bit taller than the grass now but not much.  I'm a bit disgusted with all the rain we are having.  We needed some, but not quite this much.

Anyway it is what it is.  I'll continue to mow between the rows and see how that goes.  If I keep the grass as short as possible it shouldn't be too bad.  If it ever gets dry enough I may till up part of it and replant.

I'll have to take my umbrella if I go out today Jim.  I kept saying I hoped we'd have plenty of rain this summer.  Guess I should have phrased that differently.

Water is standing in the tomato patch.  The ground is soggy.  It will be a week before I can get back in mine and that is a week of no rain!

Well the garden did not survive the rain and all the weeds.  We tilled up everything and are going to plant a few cucumbers and squash late.  Maybe some okra as well.  We did leave a few rows of peas and the corn patch.  The corn is about 4 feet high and already tasseling so I don't expect it to make much either.

This has definitely been a bad year for the garden here.  There's always next year I guess.
