Printer
« on: Nov 06, 2012, 12:38:38 PM »
All of a sudden my printer isn't connected to my computer.  It's plugged it but somehow not showing up.  I can't find the disc that came with it to reload it.  I've had it for several years.  Is there a way to reload it without the disc or should I get a new one?

If it's a USB connected printer, turn it off while the computer is turned on.  Wait a few minutes and then turn it back on.  If for some reason it has gotten uninstalled, it will try to reinstall itself.  If it doesn't, you will need to go to your Control Panel and delete the printer there, then reinstall it.  You shouldn't need a disk as long as you are connected to the internet.  it should be able to find the driver.

Now it shows that it's printing but it doesn't.  It says it's offline.

It says it's ready but when I try to print it immediately goes to offline and won't print.

Sounds like it might be the printer.  Have you tried installing it on another computer?  Other than that, it might just be time for a new one.

The local guru says the new printers all have tiny ink cartridges that will need replacement real often.  Is that true?

Yep.  Printers are not expensive because they get you with the cartridges.  I have 2 laser printers at the house.  One I paid $99 for when it was new.  The cartridge that is only good for 3000 pages cost $89.  I bought some toner on line and refilled it myself a couple of times.  I had to buy a new "chip" as well so that the printer thinks it's a new cartridge.

wow, my cartridges aren't nearly that big.  But then they cost 25 bucks each.  There are two one color and one black.  I use one about every 2 years although this year I actually ran out of both of them at the same time.  I replaced the black but the other one will have to wait.

The cartridges for ink jet printers don't normally last 3000 pages.  They make them small on purpose.  If they are lasting 2 years, then you must not print much.  I would be afraid that they would dry up or at least the ink jets clog up if I didn't use it too often.

This printer takes 4 cartridges and they do have an expiration date.  One good thing about this printer is if I run out of color I can print using just the black.  I couldn't do that with my old printer.  We don't print a lot either but it's nice to have it when you need it.

We have a color laser printer at work that takes 4 cartridges.  One black and 3 colors.  Many of the HP printers used in offices have 4 cartridges as well.

The newer printers today do some awesome things.  My laser printer at home is a copier, scanner, fax machine and printer.  It scans in color but only copies and prints in black and white.

My printer takes 5 cartridges and if one is out, it won't print. It prints beautifully, and make wonderful photos, but is a pain that it won't print using just the black. I have it set on draft mode/black and it still uses some of the color ink, though you can't see color. Very frustrating. But you really have to know photography to tell the difference between a photo print, and a real photo with this thing. And I only paid $100 for it several years ago. The ink cartridges are only $15 each and never run out at the same time. lol
