How are the sunflowers?  I've got 2 rows in the garden that are coming along.

the first box of them are up to about 12 inches (or more, that was a couple days ago) and the rest of them are coming along.  i did put one in each of the buckets that had climbers in, and those are not doing as well as the ones in boxes on the ground.  go figure :ScratchHead:

I think a bucket garden or a straw bale garden is the way to go.  Your buckets are looking good and my straw bale squash is doing great.  No tilling, now weeds, no drought, no bugs.  I'm thinking about planting everything one of these ways next year.

There are two types of blueberry bushes.  One is low growing and one is high.  The high is frequently used in commercial orchards.

no. it is a rabbiteye (one of the high bush varieties).  but it can stay there another year if need be.  they get up to about 6' tall and make great hedges.  i am trying to decide where i want to put them.  i was going to put them in back, but i think i want them somewhere more convenient.  i will get another one or two next year.

6 feet wow.  Choose a place you have a good line of sight for so you can shoot the rabbits that come calling.  Don't I sound like Elmer Fudd?

:giggle: actually, they are called rabbiteye, because they get big, and dark blue, like a rabbit's eye.  but rabbits can't eat them, they aren't tall enough to reach.  last time i picked blueberries (from a friend's bushes) they were the perfect height to just reach out and grab. not much bending at all.  but, they are the perfect height for deer to nibble. of course, i prefer venison to rabbit anyway :giggle:

my plants are older than their height suggests.  but they were cut back hard to ship to the store, so they will get big again.  and i will leave them in the buckets this year (i think).  they are happy though, and growing.  i will put up pictures this evening.

convenient is good.  You can grab a handful on the way to work when they produce.

That's a bunch of soil.  Is it from your garden or did you get potting soil or something?

I bought my buckets from the hardware store but I think resturants get some of their stuff in them too and you could probably ask them for their empties.

are  you going to tie the tomatoes to your trellis?  have you noticed any bees?  I hand pollinated my squash this morning and didn't see one  flying or crawling bug.

we have bees and other bugs, i'm not too worried about the pollination.  i didn't think about putting the tomato against the lattice, but i think i will.  or maybe, i have a small trellis i can use instead of buying a tomato cage.

as for the source of the buckets, i made friends with a girl at the restaurant where i usually have lunch.  those are all pickle buckets.  most restaurants will give them to you if you ask.  you have to wash them yourself (or do what i did, just dump the contents into the compost pile), but they are free, and food grade.  and it keeps them out of the landfill, so a triple win.

Jen, I thought about you when Johnny and I were working in the yard with a flashlight.  We've had a virus and just didn't feel like getting out until late.  It was so nice.  There are NO bugs.  It's nice but strange.  We usually hear crickets at night but not tonight.  Maybe the mockingbirds have eaten them all or have they all taken cover because the cicadas are on the way?

I dont know why i never thought of using buckets like that....great way to recycle, and when the season is done, wash them up and store until next year.

there are a couple of buckets that i actually used in my original bucket garden back in 2004.  they were protected from the sun and held up just fine.

Good question.  I know my potted stuff is requiring a great deal of watering.
