TThat was some kind of snake you had in the yard.  I'm glad I was just looking at a picture.

he's just a black snake.  Won't kill you duh.  Just scare you.

I got my first eggplants today.  I don't think I've ever cooked egg plant so I think I'll either grill them or roast them in the oven tomorrow.

good luck.  from watching iron chef I've learned that they are suppose to have a silky texture.  I can't say that's what I experienced when I had them.

I put them in the oven with some EVOO and salt and they were great.  Not silky duh, sort of crispy and great.

Last Sunday I ran the bushhog through our garden.  Another bust this year thanks to all the rain.  The grass took everything.

Jim, is it because you have sandy soil?  That said, the local farmers market hasn't been great this year either.  The Twilight Tuesday night market usually goes into August but last week was the end for this season due to the rain.  Lots of the vendors didn't have any squash or cucumbers this year.  I planted early, prayed a lot and put the squash in straw bales and put cages around the cucumbers so they could grow up so I've had a good year.

Do you rotate spaces or just row placement?  I'm thinking that I need to give my spot a rest next year or should I just rotate where I plant what?  I don't want to have to tiller up another garden spot so if I give it a rest I'll have to use straw bales again (which only works well with lots of rain) and maybe a raised bed or two.

No our soil has lots of clay.  That's why it doesn't drain well.  Our garden spot is on the highest spot but the water stands in there when we get as much as we did this year.

We amended the soil one year with the horse poop from next door and that brought lots of live weed seeds.  That's probably why I am having such a time keeping the grass out.  We need to sanitize the soil.  I really need to do that in order to kill all the weeds and seeds that get tilled under.

I just rotate the row placement but may do like you mentioned and just let it rest next year.  I've got a few other spots that we have tried with either squash or tomatoes but haven't had much luck there either.  I haven't really made my mind up about next year.  May just put out a few squash, cucumber and tomato plants in the other locations that we have tilled up before.

When I'm not busy I eat.  Today I've eaten until I'm miserable and I'm sitting here eating strawberry jello

Actually I guess I used the wrong terminology.  I should have said "solarization".  I've heard of using black plastic to cook out the weed and grass seeds but they say clear works better.  Here is a website that has lots of information on how to do it and the benefits that you get:

Here is a video that talks about it as well:

Interesting info Jim.  So you will do one garden spot at a time and plant the others?

Yes.  I was thinking of doing the main garden spot this year and see how that does.  I need to do the same to my corn patch as that might get rid of the "smut" that I get each year when I plant the silver queen.

I've started tomato, squash, cucumber seeds in the pretend green house and planted a few more strawberry plants.  The green peas, beets, and carrots are planted outside (well some of the carrots) and have come up and look ok.

It didn't happen today; but, I did plant the climbing Jacob's Coat rose, and the Tuscan Bush Rose so far this season.  I also have started a bunch of kale for the ladies at church and some radishes for me.

yesterday planted potatoes and started the straw bales.  It's too windy out there today.  I don't want a bunch of pollen blowing up my nose. :grinnnn:

yesterday I planted 3 ornamental sage and 3 yellow miniature snapdragons.  I do love those.  I have 2 ornamental sage and 3 yellow miniature snapdragons left.  I'm going to put them on the porch.  Then I have to liope (ornamental grass) to find a home for.  I love spring.

The straw bales are finished being fertilized and just waiting on the plants.  It's rained for 2 days so that's a good thing.  Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash are up in the green house and ready to be planted.  Frost in the forecast has everything on hold.

I noticed today that the snapdragons are up.

I'm waiting until the weekend to put in the rest of the snapdragons.  Then I'll be putting in the tomatoes again.  I'm excited for this year's garden.
