What Did You Do In The Garden Today - 4
« on: Aug 24, 2014, 10:58:50 PM »
I gathered some cukes, squash, tomatoes, okra and green beans.  I think the cukes are about over and I think the squash may be giving it up too.  It's not due to bugs, which is unusual, so I guess it's just time.  I've always wondered if the plants eventually stop producing on their own.

They do stop on their own. In California, if a tomato lives over winter it will begin to produce again as the weather warms in spring.

I'm also waiting to see what's going to happen to these pansys I planted last October that have lived through the summer.  Will they just keep on or will they eventually give up the ghost?

They will probably keep going. Many of our annuals aren't in their natural habitat.

I've topped one of my tomato plants so I can overwinter it indoors.

Today I cut about 1/3 of the front lawn, pruned the out of control rosemary bush and cut a fox grape vine down at the root.  i hope that takes care of it.

Thanks Tina.  I bought a daisy styled mum and then left it in the car all day.  The blooms have all died.  I hope the plant comes back.

I'll bet it will.  Prune off the flowers.  Mums are hardy.

I pulled up the squash plants and was going to try and grow more before it got cold but I've given up on that idea.  It's just not in me right now for some reason.  I'm taking up the tomato plants tomorrow.  They look sort of pitiful.  The okra looks good but I don't want to go cut it.  I'll have to think about what I want to do about that.

Tomorrow on taking up the tomato plants didn't happen until today.  Johnny said he picked about 100 (exaggerated I'm sure)while I was at Ginger's and took them to Amy.  They looked almost finished to me so today was the day.

I still have to do that.  I'm working on the future iris bed.  My neighbor split the large rock for me.  i pulled over the old shower surround and put it down to smother the weeds.  Then I dug up or cut off the bushes.  Then I put more rocks around it so I know where it starts and ends lol.  I still need to cardboard the rest of the area and then decide whether I'll put down horse poo or try and find chicken poo.

I didn't and am not going to plant anything in a fall garden.  Johnny has decided he's fat and he's hardly eating anything.  He's not fat.  He's crazy.  :)  After doing some reading and seeing a few pictures we both have decided not to ever eat chicken again.  At $6.00 a pound we can't afford to eat free range or pastured chickens so it's out.  I've told him that the flesh of a pig is probably worse than chicken but he eats bacon every morning.  Bacon is soooo good.

Here it is time to start up the garden chores if you haven't already.

Today I planted the orange primroses I bought last week.  I got a rather slow start on those.
I transplanted the lilies of the valley inside the garden plot where they were starting to grow in the lawn such as it is.
I raked around the garden beds so I wouldn't run over the rocks with the new lawnmower.
And I mowed the bottom third of the lawn with the new, self propelled, mulching, bag mower.  I loved it!

I'll get better at it as the season continues on.  I expect by the end I'll be able to mow the complete yard in a day.

Yay! Great going with a good machine, Even if you don't get it all done in a day, it will all be easier.

I agree, I get the mulching and the mowing done at the same time.  It is great.  I should have compost about 3 years faster than the old system and I shouldn't have to screen.  So it is all good.

Today I got out there and planted the Mexican Tarragon, Portulaca, Tennessee Ostrich Fern, Anstible Red Sentinel, and more Anemone.  I'm excited about that.

Then I raked about half of the leaves out of the space between the house and the shed.  I want them out in the yard so I can mow them.

That's great.  I so need to do that.

The weeds are getting away from me.

I'm going to have to get a but kicking machine here real soon.

I tried mowing yesterday and the mower quit on me.  i'm not sure what is going on there.

Then, I tried weed wacking and there wasn't enough charge in the wacker so I couldn't do that either.

And, that was after arguing with my sewing machine for over 1/2 hour.

I guess it wasn't my day to run equipment.

I planted 7 of my tomato plants today.  I've got my fingers crossed.  I actually took more cuttings than I have room for.  I guess I still can't count.  But I'll keep them for awhile incase some of them don't make it.

Some of the transplants aren't looking to good but I'll give them more time and maybe some water this evening when I get home.

I got out the weed wacker and did the street side of the ditch bed and then behind it and down the edge of the new planned iris bed.  It was so nice not to have to fight a cord.

But it sure wore me out.
