Quilting Projects #3
« on: May 13, 2015, 10:24:25 AM »
Ok just to keep track.

The sampler is in the process of being quilted using the straight line stitch in the ditch method.
The 2015 BOM is awaiting the Steps To The Alter Block.
The Stained Glass Butterfly is waiting for table time so I can re-adhere the pieces before sandwiching and quilting.
The Community Quilt for hatch quilting is sandwiched and awaiting quilting.
The Patches and Pieces BOM for May is Oh Susannah I have the directions and the fabric for this one.
The Left Panel of the Mt Fuji Bay Window Set is being appliqued.

Isn't that scary?  I think it is scary.  But I'm excited.

Yesterday was the community quilt group.  my mentor was there and she just put everything aside to teach me those things I didn't know.  I'm binding a little sample right now and it is working!!!!!! :yay_jump:  She found a nice simple quilt top for me to do for the project and told me the easy way to quilt it.  We had a great time.  She showed me so much I'm still thinking about it all.  She showed me a way to lock off a line of sewing which is so much easier than fighting with the thread like I usually do.

We had lunch all together and had many laughs and learned still more stuff.  It was great.  Who knew all these wonderful people were around doing this kind of thing.

Update, lol.

I finished the little practice piece I was learning to bind on.  I decided to hand quilt a flower in the center and see what my mentor thinks of my hand quilting.  It's slow but I got it done.

Then I filled a practice piece with free motion quilting and bound that.  I'm going to use it as the base of a sewing machine mat.

I finished the cross hatching machine quilting on the community quilt.  Now I want to stitch in the ditch around the sashing and boarder.  Then it will be binding time.  I couldn't do anything on it today because my right arm is so sore from over doing yesterday that I just couldn't do anything today.  The same for the rest of the project.  The sampler is quilted and ready to be cut and bound.  I found a mistake in one of the jacob's ladder blocks.   So I asked Joan how to fix it and she explained how I could applique a new piece over the mistake and quilt it down.

I also took Joan's 3D flowers class.

I got a little more done on the community quilt before it started messing up again.

So I decided that it was picture time.  This is just one quilt I couldn't get it all in one picture.

It isn't finished I still need to cut the edges to size and then quilt it.

Thanks all, it won't fit on the sliding glass doors it to short.  So it will go on the home office window.

I'm hand stitching the back of the binding on the community quilt and hope to be done by friday.  It's not as good as I had hoped but I'm still plugging away.  Hopefully my mentor will be able to tell me where I went horrible wrong.

I completed one "thinking of you block" this morning.  It's for my mentor.  They are a block the quilt club uses for telling someone you appreciate them.  I'm giving her this one to tell her how much I appreciate her mentoring me.

I finished the second practice machine quilting piece and I have that to quilt as well.  I even have pictures.

I've got to say that when I get within 2 inches of the edge I loose all control.  I'm going to have to find a fix for that.

Straight lines and I are not on the same page lol.  I did get an intriguing bit of advice the other day.  When doing side to side work put down the feed dogs.  That might help it stay on course.  I'm going to try that.

I have learned over the years to always keep track of the instruction booklet on things.  My memory isn't good enough to remember what I might have read years ago.

I had to start another quilt today.  This will be a charity quilt.  It will be more of the practice FMQ pieces.  I am using some backing fabric that I found in one of my closets and some panel fabric I bought because it was pretty but I never found a use for.  So I'll do the practice on it and then quilt as I go to put it together.  Then it will go to a women's shelter.

All plans have changed.  Isn't that just like life?  I finished the first community quilt...yeah!

I did a new Oh Susannah block for the community block of the month.

I've decided to make 5 "Thinking of You" blocks.  The one I made my mentor she really liked.

I've decided against the new quilt I was contemplating.  I certainly don't need to add another one to my Honey Do List.

So now it's on to binding the sampler.

It's amazing what the right group of women can mean to me.  They have just motivated me all over the place.

I received another charity quilt to quilt and bind.  I think I'll be able to fit it in nicely between finishing the sampler and getting the batting for the butterfly quilt.

I bought a bunch of quilting fabric at the consignment store.  It's to add the the huge stash they have for community quilts.  Now I know that I won't have to add anything to that stash until I pass away.

I also bought fabric for the butterfly quilt backing, a future christmas quilt, and dad's military tribute quilt.

The sampler is finished including the sleeve and the patch is made.  I've got 3 sweet treats for the competition.  I'll ask Laurie whether I should show it this friday or at our first August meeting.  I'm ready to quilt the second community quilt,  And then start on the butterfly.  Things are getting a little backed up at the hand work station.  I'll have to work on that.
