Blackberry Lillies
« on: Jul 08, 2007, 09:07:34 AM »
I never knew when I planted these the winter before last that I was going to like them as much as I do.  But I do, I do, I do.  Their simple faces and the way they swirl up at the end of the day and their marvelous seed pods make for one great looking plant.  I'm really glad I planted these and they survived long enough to bloom.

Duh, I googled (surprise... :laughpound:) the Blackberry Lily and found it to be a very unusual looking plant. Did you know that, though it's called a lily, that it is in the iris family? I think it looks like a leopard!

I didn't know that.  Your right the spots on the petals do look like leopard spots.  And the leaves fan out like glad leaves.  I don't know if Iris do that too or not.

Yes, Iris leaves do fan out like Glad leaves, & they're all in the same family as I understand it... along with Freezia & Crocus... go figure! :nutz: Blackberry Lillies sure have unique looking blossoms, & I'd love to have some seeds, if you get any from them. (Hint, hint!) I think that they might make seed pods only if the flowers were pollinated. (That's how it works with my Bearded Iris, anyway.)

I'm always trying to add to my Lily garden, & will have to thin some of them out when they die back this year, cuz some of them have gotten too prolific & it's going to get too crowded to add any new ones, before long. The Tiger Lilies that are about to bloom put out dozens of seeds (along the stems), so if I dont harvest them I'm afraid I'll wind up with a Tiger Lily garden!

I sure wish you could get your hands on a camera... I'd love to see a pic of your flowers! (I think those Lilies must have been named by someone who had never seen a blackberry... or a leopard!)

I think you are right that only the pollinated ones make seed pods because some of the bloosoms just fall off of the plant after they are done blooming.  I don't have any ripe seeds yet but I think I'll have a good harvest in the fall.

What I've learned about germinating them is that they are good canidates for fall or winter sowing.   They don't like to be transplanted so are better directly sown.  They like sun and slightly more than average water and garden soil mixed with about 50% compost.

dunno, just what the lil "stick" said when I saved the original from the reduced bin!
umm, well Ours is the same color as the pic, so, yeah, I gots lotsa seed of that color...different would be nice.
They are not all that spectacular, but add a nice splash of color, and they spread by seed rather well

Hmmm!  I just found this on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources web site...
Quote
Blackberry lily, also known as leopard flower, may grow to a height of about three feet. Its flowers are orange with purple or dark red spots. Pear-shaped seed pods develop and split open in late summer, with each pod revealing a blackberry-like seed cluster, thus the common name of "blackberry lily."

Now THAT makes more sense!

I never shop from catalogs, but I wonder if any of those seed companies carry the purple ones. (If this world didn't have purple in it, I'd die!)

Holy Moley, Andy!   $12.99 for only THREE bulbs? I don't think I want them THAT bad! I'll just give BG some poster paints & have her put dots on some of our flowers!

Take a look at the Egret Flower they have on that site! :Wow: I've never seen one of those either, & I gotta have that one too! (But not at $9.45 for two of em!)

Now I'm on a quest!  Thanx for the link, Jim. ;)

Patty before you go after the Egret Flower check it out.  Talk about hard to grow.  I know I looked at it last year and had a "gottahave" moment too.  But after I researched it I decided I'd be better off without it.  There is no way I could provide it with it's requirements.

My blackberry lilies are the standard orange, sorry no purple.  I think a way to get around the cost is to go in together and buy them.  because your right you do get a bunch of seeds and it only takes two years to get them.  Not like the Crown Imperials or Birds of Paradise that are so slow to mature and difficult to reproduce.
