A new quilt - My Grandmother's Garden
«

This one I will do with an english paper piecing method. The top will be done totally by hand. I'm doing it for two reasons. One I love the look of one and two it will mean I always have handwork for the applique group. So win win. i'm doing it with a black on black background and jewel tones for the petals and an undetermined flower center. If you have any ideas please tell me.

Yes it will be. I'm glad I was able to put the fabric with this pattern. I had bought the fabric for another reason and it hadn't worked out so this is wonderful.

I'm thinking it will be 34 x 64 for one of the windows. or possible a car quillow which can be anything for 48 x 48 or larger.

it would be close. I usually like an overhang on a bed so for singles I try for 59x96.

Yes, I was just trying to get a mental picture. It's the way I 'measure' things.

I see. I don't have enough experience to have landmarks in the land of quilts. I hope to develop them as time goes on.

I went through my scraps and only found one piece of fabric that I want for this quilt. Then I went through my warm colors and found another 5 or so. I'm not sure they all go together. I may end up with two of these types of quilts. The black on black did not work for the quilt. The fabric was to heavy and would not crease well and it's not 100 percent cotton. i ended up melting it to the bottom of my iron. What a mess to clean up that was.

absolutely. But it's cleaned up now. Of course I need more of the iron cleaner goop.

i have completed the first flower and have cut out my first row of path fabric. It is softer than most of the other fabric so I am starching it before I iron it onto the paper pieces. It's going faster than i thought.

I'm pushing to get everything cut and ironed so that I can cut out the blooming nine patch. That isn't until summer but it is a huge amount of cutting.

it is. I just have to figure out which fabrics need to be cut first because they will go on the top first. There aren't enough paper pieces to have one for every hexagon so they have to be placed in order and I hadn't figured that out yet. I'm not sure I've figured it out now. I may need design board help.

well the gold and purple flower is done and bordered with the black path. It looks good. I hope the darker colors will work. There is always something to worry about with quilting it seems. I have never been a jigsaw puzzle person but it seems like that would have been good training for putting this quilts together.

The deadline for this one is around 1 1/2 years total. That gives me 36 weeks one flower per week then a border of appliqued flowers. Then the quilting and binding. I've decided that the quilting will be one petal per hexagon in the flower and the path will be cobblestoned quilting.

There are 12 colors on a tertiary color wheel which should give me two rows before I need to repeat a color right. Well not if I don't come home with all 12 colors. i had missed the yellow green and the blue purple. At least i hope that's all I had missed. Fortunately today was bag lady day (20%) off. So I got another rotary blade and 4 more fabrics. two of each color. Hopefully I now have enough.

I want to have this cut before I start the bargello class in mid may. I also want all the colors numbered in the order they will appear in the quilt so I don't obsess about that anymore.

I understand totally what you are saying. The reason I have more than one going at a time is because the applique group is all hand work no machines. So a normal quilt only needs hand work for the binding. Maybe 4 days for each quilt. The chances of that falling on the one day a month that the group meets is kind of slight. So this quilt is done entirely by hand. So I'll have something to do when that group meets.
Then the class is to learn a new technique that I'll want to use later on.
The raggedy brick is a charity quilt so it will go to the needy as soon as it is done.
Then the victorian is for my daughter as an heirloom because I think everyone should have one. My mom passed down some nice costume jewelry but i got it to soon and lost it in all the moves.
