Photography, Graphic Arts
« on: Jul 12, 2007, 07:09:20 PM »
Hi All,

Thought I'd share some photos for the sake of sharing. Recently my mentor told me that I have graduated from a 'wannabe' photographer to someone who should have their stuff in a gallery trying to make a name for  myself.

The person who told me this teaches photography, art, etc. at Pacific School of Religion, in Berkeley, CA.  He is also a professional photographer, see www.hilaryfmarckx.com if you'd like. His photos are breathtaking!

Hilary is also my pastor from where I moved from in Sonoma County, CA. So, one might want to keep in mind that he might be prejudiced a bit. (and I am his webmaster... for his photography website and our church website.)  And he married me and Clyde just over two years ago...

just a little prejudiced. hahahaha!!!

Part of what I did go to school for was website creation. In the process of learning about that I had to learn some stuff about graphic arts...I LOVE working with Photoshop. As you will soon see.

Anyways, we went to the Air Show in Roseburg the other day.  And I took a few photos. And then I collaged some.  So, I thought I'd share two of my hobbies today.  Not only do I love photography, but I just love airplanes, especially the P51 Mustang.

My little girl's daddy introduced me to the Air Races in Reno.  Once a year, there is a big Air Show and Races.  All kinds of planes race for days, but my favorite race was the Unlimited. It features primarily the P51, but there were hybrids (Gary Levitz's LearStang, Miss Ashley, was one).  There are other kinds of planes that race as well.  I Think I love them so much because of the nose art to be honest, I have hundreds of pictures of nose art at this point. If there were not already a book out there on nose art, I'd probably publish one. And I love the sound of those engines--made by the likes of Rolls Royce and Merlin.

Have Fun, Peg

sorry bout photo quality, photobucket kind of smushes the photos some.
How are you?  I'm great!  Glad to see you! Hope we meet again!

One of the things that I love to do is go to work with my husband.  He repairs ATM machines. His territory covers from Redding, California and over to the coast, up to and including Albany, Oregon and as far east as Christmas Valley, Oregon.  One of the reasons I like it so much, is because sometimes he has time to stop and let me take pictures.

In May, I got to go with him to Eureka. And he stopped by the Jetty in Crescent City so I could do my thing.

We saw the Long Boats from Highway 101 and tried to get a good photo from the beach.

I was afraid that what I got wasn't good enough, hence we started looking for how to get to the Jetty. And here is what I got:

I have very high quality resolution copies if anyone would like any.

I just loved the contrast of the rusty color on the grey concrete. It's hard to imagine, but whatever this rusty contraption is (a cable or chain??), It is HUGE!

Saw footprints in the sand, took a photo, and knew I'd put the poem on the photograph if it came out good.

The seagull is set up to work as wallpaper for a computer. If you need a better copy let me know.

I thought this driftwood looked so much like a critter putting it's head and front paws up.

and just so you can see how big those pieces of concrete are in the photo above--the one below has my husband in it. He's 5'10", and as you can see, he's pretty drawfed by them.

Did I ever tell ya, just how lucky I am!?! I have a pretty good life!
Take care, Peg

Awesome shots, Peggy! I can just feel the mist coming off those waves & hear them roar! Are those big concrete things the breakwater jetty in C-City? I've never been to the beach there & didn't know that made them that way... looks like something that dropped in from Stonehenge!

Photobucket does mess up some pics, but yours seem to be fine! Nice job on the shots you got at the airshow... of course, most of the planes were sitting still for you! :rolleyes1: Here's the best one I got with my cheapy cam from the deck as they went over the house
...for 2 days straight!   No naps were happening around here!

Outstanding photos.  I love the shots of the airshow.  Of course I'm kind of partial to aircraft.  Guess that comes from spending 22 years in the USAF.  I hardly ever missed an airshow.  I got lots of photos but didn't have a digital camera so they are stuck away in a box and they are no comparison to yours.

I think your mentor is dead on the mark about your talent.  I really enjoy your photos.  Thank you so much for sharing them with us.

Thank you very much, Jim...
I have a special place in my heart for Veterans, for what they have done for us.  My little girls granddad was a Flight Engineer in the USAF.  He flew Over the Hump.  He went on to Vietnam and through Korea, and retired only when they forced him out.  He was dedicated, and a good man.

I'm glad you liked the photos. I thought of you first off, being a guy and all. hahaha

I have more pictures at my website: http://www.pegrowe.com
There are some, I don't dare put on photo bucket. If you read the fine print,
you'll see that anything you store their becomes "theirs" to do what they please with...and I can't have that.

Thanks again, Peg

Thanks, Patty.  Yes, those big pieces of concrete are just dumped into the ocean and looks like they are there to break the waves and protect the harbor.  There is a park there by Battery Point (where the light house is) and you can park and walk out onto the Jetty which is what we did.  There are signs posted, you are taking a chance to walk out there. I guess on a stormy day the waves come up and over the Jetty.  So the pictures were take from all up and down the Jetty.

I took over 200 photos at the airshow, but I've not worked with them all yet.  Next year, I will take another lense with me to the Air Show and see if I can get even closer up of those in the air!  I like what I got, but wish they were closer.   Course, I'd like it even better if I could be in a plane right next to the one's in the air! hahaha!!

I have had a friend recommend that I find some county agency to do photography work for.  Where I can go out into the forest, and wildlands, and do photos for calenders, and visitor centers, etc.  I like the idea anyways.  hahaha, I have no clue where I'd start.... but, could you imagine getting paid to do what you love! Wow!!!!

you've had a nap, right?? lol!! now??? hehehe!!!

hugs!! peg

Fantastic pictures, Peggy! :grinnnn: I thought the driftwood "critter" picture was awesome. The details in all of your pictures are amazing...

Did I ever tell ya, just how lucky I am!?! I have a pretty good life!

Clyde has been on vacation this week. So, on the 15th of July, Clyde and I went four wheeling with a new friend that Clyde made named Jeremy. Jeremy brought Travis, since his wife is very pregnant.  Clyde brought Diane and me.

The jeep got to pretend it was a mountain goat again, only this time we were not hanging off the sides of mountains like we usually do. This time we took real "four wheel drive" paths, though not the really rough ones.  This time, we went on paths that I could literally touch the ground underneath us..No wait, beside us, without extending my arm from my side window--yes, the jeep drives kind of sideways, and no, I didn't exactly scream.

The boys stopped about halfway through and shot at clay pigeons. I was glad that they threw them for each other, that saved my arm. I've tried in the past to throw them for Clyde, and most of mine end up by my feet in pieces. I just can't get the hang of that thrower thing.  They laughed a lot as two boys with two shotguns raced to see who was hitting it first, and so forth.  Boys...these guys are in their 30's and Clyde is 43!

Where we stopped to shoot was very close to a local mine, a mine where nickle is mined from the mountain that has been around for years and years. Hence, the name of Nickle Mine.

Here is a photo of part of the mine:

Where we were had obviously been worked over at sometime  in the past.  It was bare of trees save a few here and there, and looked like it was mostly just brown weeds.  I took out my camera because I eyed a purple flower.  I figured if I could get pictures of that purple flower, I'd be happy as clam.

With me, one photo naturally follows another.. my eye catches colors and objects. I think I just do not take for granted anything much I see... I can not explain it other than that, but in jumping from one scene to another, I realized that this seemingly dead spot on top of this mountain was not dead at all.

From this area we continued on our adventure. We traveled from Boomer Hill to Doe Creek (off of Cow Creek). We stopped next at a pond, made by the mining company and probably is not recommended for swimming, or drinking, but I got some neat pictures of ants swarmming on this little bush.  One even found it in his little heart to bite me and remind me that I was invading HIS space! By this pond we found dragon flies, ducks, deer, fawn and elk tracks. It was pretty awesome.

From there we went down to Doe Creek, and onto Island Creek, where Jeremy showed us the best swimming hole yet. It is out of the way, and you can only get there via some sort of four wheel drive with good clearance, as we literally cross Cow Creek and then drive down it some distance.  The hole is deeper than I am tall in places, but it goes down gradually, and it has a gravel bottom rather than a rocky one where people can hurt themselves (ya, I have done that too!).

It was a fun day, and we hope to do it again someday soon!!

Here are my photos:

hopefully, soon I'll get busy and get the ants, and pond pictures ready to share. These were

all taken up on the mountain top where the guys shot their guns..

hugs to all!! Peg

I've been waiting all week for you to slow down & post those pics, Peggy! I guess that's what I get for stealing Diane from you for another week of VBS, so you could go running around in the woods!  :dummy:

I know that you took hundreds of pics on your outings this past week... how ever do you decide which ones to post?! They're all so good, but I wish we knew what some of those plants/flowers are. (I know that you do too, but don't not post them just cuz they're unknowns!)

I see that you ran across the same thistle that's in Amy's back yard!  Between the gardens & the girls, I've been so busy that I haven't had the chance to go over & check to see if they ever put out more than the purple hue they had, the last time I saw them.

As usual, your photography is superb, but you didn't put the pic up that you sent me the other day, that got me so excited!  (It was probably from a different day than the ones you just posted, cuz I know you didn't have Diane with you when you ran across it... Hey, BTW, that's an awesome shot of "our" sweetie pie!)

I might be ruining your plans for the pics you're planning on posting from your other outings, but I'm so excited about this one, I'm going to post it!

Looky what Peggy found, folks...

It's a little, itty bitty, miniature Tiger Lily!
She dug up a few & brought me teeny tiny bulbs! :Yahoo:
I'm so excited about these, I can't stand it! :Glee:
I wish we could get our schedules synchronized, so Keith & I could go on one of these outings with you guys! Of course, the tiny Tigers aren't going to still be there, even if we could do it in what's left of this month, but I'm sure we'd find something else that I'd be impressed with! :grinnnn: (But we'd hafta be going some, to beat those!)

You really are talented with that camera. The pic with the little purple flowers is so cool. It looks like it is suspended in mid air! I know it's not, it just your talent! All the pics are wonderful. And I agree that the miniature tiger lily is a special find!

Yes, that is a great picture of Di, I wish I had gotten closer in on her. Today I was told that the purple flower in my photos is called CAMAS, and it grows from a bulb, and I want to go back and get some!!!  lol (here is a link: http://www.paghat.com/camas.html)

How do I decide what photos to share.. I unload my camera, all blurry photos are deleted first, then I go through again and take out bad shots... and then from there, I look for great shots.  Sometimes only one in a hundred make it to the other folk's vision.

At the waterfalls last week, Clyde and I took almost four hundred shots between us...  lol, I haven't even begun on those yet.

It didn't ruin my plans on the Tiger Lily photo.. I'm busy for a couple more days before I can get to them.

Hope everyone is well!! peg

Beautiful shots, Peggy! I love all those bright colored flowers.

Your little girl is as pretty as the flowers, also. I loved that photo of her with the crossroads behind her...

July 20, 2007

On Thursday we thought we would go to the coast. The goal was to have dinner at a place that had clam chowder! We thought we'd drive the Cow Creek By Way (an Oregon Back Road, Scenic Bicycle Route developed by the National Forest Systems).  In our minds we were going to go to Marial, Oregon first and then go on to the Coast. We were hoping to end up in Gold Beach.

So, we headed out.  It is a beautiful drive up these roads, and we crossed over from Douglas County to Coos County.  We are on roads that are not on regular maps, and had to watch for signs carefully.  We knew that folks died out in these parts and so were particularly careful. Of course, the roads are marked fairly well, and we both wondered how people got lost out there.... we found out the answer to that later...

If you drive out Pruner Road and go past Riddle, the road follows Cow Creek then eventually turn off at the West Fork (of Cow Creek) Bridge and go out that way, well about 22 miles and then you have made it to Murial.

Between West Fork and Murial, you'll run into a sign that says "Coast, Murial, and Merlin" on it.  That is what I called the Bobby Creek cut off, and following it takes you over to Road 33, which is part of the Glendale/Merlin/Powers Bicycle Route (road) a scenic National Back Road circle of about 70 miles.

While on this road we saw some really pretty sights, but the thing I found most interesting on this particular leg of the journey was some 'grass' that was obviously in end of it's bloom.  I'd say it was even almost done making seeds. I don't know what it was, but, as the day went on, and we got closer to the coast, we saw a lot more of it.

And here it is:

and it's seeds:

We headed for Murial first.  And what we found was that we went over the top of some mountains and down into the Rogue River Valley.  We found the Rogue River Ranch which seems to be at Murial, and after having crossed dry mountains colored with yellow grasses the Ranch seemed like an oasis in the desert. The valley was green all around the ranch, it was truly beautiful.

There was a museum there, but it was closed due to repairs being done. So, we didn't get to do that part! Dern it!

Rogue River Ranch was settled in 1898 by the Billings Family. They replaced an old miner's cabin and put on a real house, built a store, and soon it became a supply station and weight station for weary travelers from all around.  A year after moving in Mr. Billings started an operation to keep miners on the West Fork of Cow Creek supplied with necessities. In 1931, the Ranch was sold to a man from Hollywood and the ranch became a resort for folks taking boat rides down the Rogue Rapids.... in the 1970's the Ranch was sold to the Forestry Department.

Today, there is a camp site associated with the Ranch, and one can ride mail boats up the Rogue and be dropped off to camp, and then ride the boats farther up the river.

According to the signs around the Ranch, a town or some place called Illahe was only a mile away, but we never did find it.

We headed back to Road 33 and continued on our trek to the coast.  We stopped only so that Clyde could shoot one of is .22 pistols. I shot it a couple times too, it is a fun gun to shoot. Out of the six shots I actually hit my target (a cardboard box that held the shells) 1/2 the time!!!

Clyde told me that the thing he liked the best lately was getting to take me places where he knew I wanted to go. Doesn't look so nice or romantic in black and white here, but the way he said it, and the way I took it...well, let's just say it made me very happy. He dug me up Rhodies which don't look too healthy today.

He dug me up Tiger Lilies, and their bulbs.  The first Tiger Lilies we found were not much bigger than a quarter, and had roundish shaped leaves. (Patty posted my picture in this thread, already) When he dug up the bulb they were a conglomeration of these tiny little bublets, that kind of fell apart in his hands.  He was so sorry he broke them, I was happy to have them....I was happy he made the effort.  I've been married before and no one in my past ever cared about the flowers I liked.

Clyde dug me up what looked like full sized Tiger Lilies too, but their bulbs were more like flakes..My friend, Patty says they are called Scales, and each one of them grows...I took a ton of photos of Tiger lily's because I love them so much...most of them are close ups, I'll include one of the full sized one's here, because it shows the whole plant, but gotta warn ya, it's fuzzy!!
(The whole plant for you, Patty!)

All that day, we stopped and dug up flowers, and took pictures:

While taking the picture you just looked at, I saw a tiny pod containing seeds next to it, and just thought that could make a great picture too, so I took that one:

When we left Murial we saw a sign that said that the coast was still 42 miles away.  It was well after lunch time by this time, so we knew we had to keep going if we were going to make Gold Beach for dinner!!  We followed the signs, and drove, and drove, and drove... our paved road with good signs turned into a graveled wash board. We began to worry about where we were, and if we were going the right direction.  And Clyde who is diabetic was getting hungry... and grouchy.  I learned this day to always carry something for him to snack on, just in case
we don't get to the destination on time.

On Washboard drive, we saw a mother deer and her two babies:

As we finally saw signs of life, and realizing after all that driving we were still in the Rogue Valley and not any closer to the coast, we FINALLY ran into another sign that said that the coast was still 42 miles away, and that we were just a few miles from a town named Agnes. Agnes as the welcoming sign said had a population of "small".  It had a post office, and a store, and an outhouse.  The store had closed at 5:30 p.m. but there were three men sitting out side chatting who gave us directions to the coast. The sign that said that the coast was 42 miles, Illahe was only 6 miles away, it also said that Merlin was like 38 miles, and Grants Pass was 56 miles. Or something like that...we discussed it and opted to go back to Grants Pass because Clyde was VERY hungry now, and I was concerned about his sugars--and because we knew our way around the outsides of Grants Pass, whereas if we got lost on the way to the coast anymore than we were, Clyde could have ended up in trouble (at least in my mind...)

At 9:30 p.m. we pulled into the Denny's parking lot in Grants Pass.  It was a beautiful ride back from Agnes to Grants Pass. We ventured a guess, that the road which was paved and rough in some spots was probably an old highway. We saw many camp sites, where no one was camping....not even in july. We got more flowers... And following the Rogue River into Merlin gave me more perspective into the history of the area. I found it fascinating.

One of the things we had discovered this day...one of the things that really excited both of us was a waterfall we found. Somehow, we had crossed over onto Road 33 which followed the South Coquille River. We saw a waterfall from the roadway and had to stop. We wanted photos:

But, there was seemingly no way down to the falls to get those photos... Clyde followed a very steep path part way down and determined that we could get down, if we got rope and other climbing paraphernalia, so we vowed to get what we need and go back the next day and get those photos.

If you look down at the bottom of this photo, you can see the beginnings of the path we took the next day, and you can see, it gets lost pretty quick, because it pretty much goes straight down!

I told Clyde we would remember where the falls were because right across the street was a baby waterfall, which he poo-pooed that day... too small for him to pay much attention too.  But, I found them beautiful, and thought they'd make a perfect place for a couple to say their marriage vows. So, I took a picture:

We got home around midnight. We were very, very tired...and we set the clock for 7:30 a.m. the next morning, and we barely made it up and out of bed!

Before, I quit this note, I'd like to say how thankful I am to my friend Patty, and her daughter in law, and son, and her grand daughter, BG (Big Girl).  Patty has befriended me in a most precious way. We met via either FreeCycle (Roseburg) or Craig's List...I don't remember, what I remember is that I was giving away some Passion Flower.  She came to my house to collect her flowers, and I showed her my "brand new" really OLD house, and my yellow yard with so much potential. And she just was so excited about what I could do with my yard.  When it came time, she shared Iris with me....and since she has shared so much more.

It has been so nice to meet somene who shares my passion for gardening. But Patty has also shaired her grand daughter the same age as my youngest daughter, and the two little girls think so much alike, they never fight, they play for hours on end...they get along. Patty has taken my baby into her home for a week, two months in a row so that she could go to vacation bible school with BG. Diane loved the time with BG and Grandma Patty, and Patty seems to love my kid.

And Clyde and I had not had time to ourselves in months, and months... the last time we had alone, he was in the hospital getting open heart surgery. Patty made our trip and alone time, possible. Thank you, Patty, Keith, Amy, Dave, and BG for sharing your time, and your heart with Diane.  And with us.

I've got only one more batch of photos to share now...pictures of not one waterfall, but a series of waterfalls that we found on the South Coquille River, in Coos County, Oregon.

P.s: during this ride all day  long, we both questioned people's sanity and how in the world they could get lost out there... and die even!!!! (Which happened to a man in that area, last winter.) The road is paved (most the way), there are signs... there are gates to keep people off of gravel BLM roads that frequently intersect this National Back Road. By the end of the day, when we knew we had failed to procure our clam chowder, we realized how easy it would be to get lost in a few feet of snow that could cover up a sign... we also determined that it was a good possibility that someone had vandalized a sign because we drove a good 40 miles only to find that the coast was the same distance away as it was four hours earlier in the drive.  By the end of the day, we were humbled, and understood how folks could get lost and die, and we were sorry we questioned folks.

Not only are you a fantastic photographer but you can write too.  I really enjoyed your latest photos as well as the way you tell the story.  It almost feels like we were right there with you.  Thank you so much for sharing these fantastic trips with us.  Feel free to start a new topic on each trip as I can assure you we all enjoy reading about them.

I spent a total of 5 years in California and now I'm sorry I didn't take a week or so and drive up to Oregon.

Peggy, I could look at your pics all day long!   They're so vivid & 3-dimensional, I can almost smell the flowers, feel the mist coming off the waterfalls, & taste the dust on those backroads.  It seems to be a popular consensus that you keep going on your field trips & bring back pics for us!  (And I like Jim's idea about starting a new topic for each one... those of us with dialup would have to miss our bed time, waiting for the pics to load, if you had an ongoing thread!) Keep up the good work! :wink5:

Ummm... about the places you go exploring: I know that I've said many times that Keith & I need to get our weekends synchronized with yours, so we can go trekking with you... but after seeing the places that you guys were playing mountain goat in, I think I've changed my mind!  You can just drop Diane off here (where she'll be safe & won't be traumatized) & we'll stay home & look at pictures! :Whis: I think that Dave & Amy would like to tag along on one of your explorations, though. (in which case, we'll keep both girls here!)  They like that sort of thing & are closer to you & Clyde in ages, so they'd be better able to keep up with you!

Besides that, even though Keith was an EMT for a while & would know what to do if one of you us broke their fool neck, I believe he'd want to avoid a situation where he might be called on to haul somebody up a canyon wall!  His football player physique has given way to what I refer to as the "pencil pusher's profile", & I don't think any of us would enjoy hauling HIM out of a canyon, either... even if you do have a winch on your Jeep! :laughpound:

Now, about that kid of yours: We should all be thanking YOU for sharing her with us!  The first time we met her, I think that BG & I both knew that we couldn't just take the flowers you gave us & go away & forget about her... cuz a magnetism happened!  Now that we've gotten to know her better, I do believe that the girls have a formed a friendship that'll most likely go on for many years to come. (After all, when Diane told BG that she hadn't been baptized but wanted to be, & BG accommodated her by baptizing her in the bathtub, that was the beginning of a "secret" bond that they'll probably remember for a while!)   She's a darling, gentle spirit, & we just love her to pieces!  I think she's hooked on Grampa Keith as much as BG is, & he enjoys her... even if having both girls giving him their now famous head massages & "dome polishing" treatments interferes with his naps in the recliner!  :laughpound:

When someone leaves their toothbrush hanging in my bathroom next to BG's, that means they want to come back, & that's quite a compliment, in my book! Having your "baby" here is a joy for me, & we have lots of fun together, just being "us"!

Besides, I don't have time get old when I have my girls around!

Diane is more than welcome here any time, as are you & Clyde. It's hard to grasp the fact that we've only known each other for such a short time (seems like forever), but we appreciate your friendship & the values we share, as well as your delightful humor!

I don't have any pictures with mushy verses on them to offer, but yours is beautiful & appreciated. Thanks for being a part of our forum family & for sharing your adventures with us! :kissies:

You really are talented with that camera. The pic with the little purple flowers is so cool. It looks like it is suspended in mid air! I know it's not, it just your talent! All the pics are wonderful. And I agree that the miniature tiger lily is a special find!

Thank you, Sunsoaker!! For the nice words! I really do enjoy taking pictures.  :) Peg

Thanks Jim,

If you ever come back to the west coast, make sure you stop in the Roseburg area to see Patty and Me!!

Thank you, Patty... you and your whole family are the best. And we could you know, drive in nicer places so you and keith can go along, but we'd have fun with Amy and Dave too. But, I have to say, Clyde is on call for the next two weeks, starting today, so our freedom is now quite curtailed. Everywhere we go, we have to take two vehicles, can't go out of his work phone range... it's a pain in the rear.

Anyways, Thanks so much!!! hugs!!!   Peg

I'll tell you one thing, Peggy... if Jim were to come anywhere close to Oregon & didn't come to Roseburg, I guarantee that he'd be in for some MAJOR Petunia kickin! (I dont have a way to make that graphic as big as I'd like it to be right now!) ...and he'd better bring the little lady with him (& I'm not talking about that doggy!)

We have lots of summer still ahead of us, Peg... we'll get together sooner or later. :wink5:
