Clean off the crap
« on: Aug 13, 2007, 09:54:35 PM »
Windows is not a good housekeeping operating system.  When you install programs and then uninstall them at some later date, I would just about bet there are remnants of that program left on your hard drive.  Windows leaves traces of your online activities all over your hard drive in the form of cookies.  I think most of you would be surprised how much space is taken up by unused programs and files that are left behind when you delete or uninstall something.

What can you do?  Try this nifty little application - CCleaner (formerly known as CrapCleaner).  It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.  You can also use it to uninstall stubborn files that for some reason you can't uninstall and you can also manage your cookies from within CCleaner.

This is a great little utility.  I use it about once a week and highly recommend it.  And yes, believe it or not it is FREE.  Here is the link if you are interested in trying CCleaner .  If you have trouble using it, post some questions and I will try to put up some screen-shots.

Good to hear Jimmy.  The big pay-off here is when you see a definite increase in speed because of getting rid of all that junk.

Somewhere in here, I read a tutorial on how to delete programs like McAfee of of my computer. Now I cannot find it. I figured the new year was a good time to clean stuff up.

OK I am not Technical at all .. But The CCleaner couldn't remove the Epson printer manual.. I tried to uninstall and it was not working.. I went to the program files and got a notice that kinda scared me  :SmileyNailbiting: saying they could be linked to other programs .. this is taking up a ton of disk space and I don't have that printer anymore

When it says its connected to other programs it asks do you still want to uninstall right? I've gotten those and uninstalled and nothing else was affected. You can always reinstall what you do want if anything is affected.

Rita, did you try the uninstaller that came with the Epson printer?  Normally there is an uninstall function.  If there isn't, you should be able to use the Uninstall function of CCleaner.  It works pretty much the same way.  If the manual is listed in your control panel, you should be able to uninstall it there too.

What is the model number on the printer that you no longer have?

It was a Epson cx6400.
I tried to use the uninstall and it would not work. The CCleaner would not delete it either  :dunno: I was a bit nervous deleting it from the program Files ..
I am  going to download this for work too ...

If the printer is still in your control panel "Printers" folder, then just right click on it and select Delete.  That should remove the printer from your system.  If there is software or drivers, they should be listed in the "Add, remove programs" option on the control panel.

If they aren't listed there, just click on the folder or file and delete it.  Disregard any messages you receive as deleting a manual shouldn't hurt a thing.

Okay, can you tell me the programs listed with the little computer moniter, box, and CD icon, are those just updates or setups that I can remove?  You don't need the setup once it's been installed, right?  I included a pic, just in case you don't know what I mean, the highlighted gray box is one of many in question.  (I know it's small but it's a clickable)

landofoz, best to leave that. If you were to remove it, computer may need it back, or windows update may have it listed for download again, not sure, though.

I clean everything that the cleaner finds after "Run Cleaner" in Cleaner tab and "Scan for issues" in Registry tab and this has never harmed my system.

I am no computer expert, by the way.

Take William's advice and leave those.  The one you have highlighted is part of SP2 so may be needed.

I clean everything that the cleaner finds after "Run Cleaner" in Cleaner tab and "Scan for issues" in Registry tab and this has never harmed my system.

I do exactly the same thing.  In fact I always run the cleaner and the Registry Issues at least twice but mostly until I get the "none found" message.

so whatever comes up you delete from your computer?  Right.  I also clicked on tools and it listed a bunch of programs to be deleted but they were things I use.

I've only used the Tools menu when I wanted to modify or see what is in the startup.  It is considered for advanced uses, guess that's why I hardly ever use it.

I left tools alone when it listed so  much stuff I use but I did clear everything that came up in the others.  I had to re-enter my password to get in here tonight.

On the Cookies screen, you can select certain ones that you don't clear.  I usually leave the ones for my forums so I don't have to login again.  Of course there are times that we may say to clear all your cookies to try and fix a problem so use it if you want.

I normally run CCleaner about once a week.  I think it does help to keep things cleaned up.

I downloaded and ran this program.  It was really smooth.  No problems like I usually have when I try and download something.
