Jimmy needs to be on a no sugar and no sodium diet and has requested suggestions for food that contain neither. I figure that if we all put our heads together, we can come up with lots of things that he will be able to eat besides salad. We would appreciate any advice on menus for meals.

My first suggestion is to eat lean meat and season it with onion powder/garlic powder/lemon juice in place of salt. Make sure that your seasonings don't have salt in them, Jimmy, or that will defeat the purpose. grinnnn I like roasted chicken... 542

My second suggestion is to eat fresh or frozen fruits. Canned fruits are notoriously loaded with sugar products. If you must eat canned, rinse them off with water first... Wink

Now, a'googlin' I will go!  Smiley

I do have a question, though. Are you hyper- or hypo- glycemic?

Are natural sugars ok or are they bad as well?

Baked meat is great and he can make a season rub of all kinds of spices and keep flavor without sugar or salt.  Using olive oil as a base, just a touch, and load it up with the spices.  For chicken sage, thyme and rosemary are a great combination.  For pork I like to use garlic powder, onion powder and paprika and for red meats, peppers and basil.

Baked potatoes or rice can be really good with no salt butters if you add spices to them as well.

And any kind of frozen fruits blended feel like dessert.

Potatoes and white rice are full of starch that turns to sugar in your system.. stay away from All whites bread ect..
brown whole grain breads
Brown whole grain rices barley rye..

Fil is diabetic and we are having the same issues with him..
Lots of fish and chicken..

6  cups no-salt-added chicken stock (see other recipe coming soon) 
2  cups water (purified) 
1  tablespoon olive oil 
1  small vidalia onions 
2  carrots 
2  stalks celery 
2 (15  ounce) cans no-salt-added diced tomatoes, including juice 
2  cups frozen no-salt-added peas 
2  cups corn (buy 3 ears) 
2  cups green beans (buy 3 large handfuls) 
1  medium yukon gold potato 
1 (15  ounce) can no-salt-added black beans or no-salt-added navy beans or other no-salt-added beans, drained, rinsed 
2  tablespoons flavor enhancer (see other recipe coming soon) 
3  ounces no-salt added tomato paste 
1  teaspoon black pepper 
2  cups diced cooked chicken (optional) 

Make chicken stock.
Add olive oil to soup pot.
Chop onion, carrots, and celery.
Heat olive oil over medium heat.
When hot, add onion, carrots, and celery.
Saute until softened.
Add chicken stock and water and increase heat to high.
Add remaining vegetables except tomato paste, and Flavor Enhancer.
Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Mix tomato paste in 1/2 cup of the broth and add to soup.
Add black pepper.
Increase heat to high to return to simmer, then reduce to medium-low.
Simmer for another 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add chicken, if using, and cook for 5 minutes.
Set aside enough soup for rest of week.
Freeze remaining soup in one cup containers for future use.

This one looked good to me...

Cottage Cheese-Banana Breakfast Delite

1  small cinnamon raisin bagel or English muffin or 2 slices whole wheat bread 
1  medium banana, sliced 
1/4  cup low fat cottage cheese or fat-free cottage cheese 
1  packet sugar substitute 
1  dash ground cinnamon 


Toast bagel, english muffin, or bread.
Top with sliced banana.
Spread cottage cheese evenly over top.
Sprinkle sugar substitute and cinnamon over top.
ENJOY!

thanks everyone they all look good. Dianna I have been extremely hypo till lately I am now borderline trying to stop this or at least slow it down now so I don't go full blown all my family on both sides were diabetic this now leaves only my sister that is Hypo like I use to she keeps liquid glucose as well as glucose tabs handy all the time. Due to food allergies I can't eat fish or pork. Can anyone tell me how to get the sodium out of canned products they are all full of it.

Triss yes Doctor said I can have natural sugars as in fresh fruit etc. in fact he told me to eat a lot of fresh fruit so part of my lunch beside the salad for tomorrow is a peach half a purple plum and an red Apricot half. Made my salad dressing out of Balsamic red Vinegar added garlic and red pepper (have to have red pepper grinnnn) and a couple of peppers off my Thai pepper bush.

I really wouldn't know how to get the salt out of canned veggies, Jimmy. Maybe rinsing them would help? unsure From what I have read today, fresh or frozen veggies would be your best bet to keep the salt intake down...

And you should read the labels on your frozen veggies. They may still have boatloads of salt.

No way to get the salt out of the canned veggies, you could rinse them but I do not think it would help a whole heck of a lot.  There are a lot of salt free veggies and you could cook them in salt free broth for a bit of flavor.

And canned goods marked "low salt" are not much better than, and sometimes worse than regular canned products.

Are they that bad?  I have never had to use them before.  I know you can just avoid it all by cooking it all fresh.

Do you have a crock pot Jimmy?  You can do so much there and let it soak and simmer away all day letting the flavors mix for some really yummy food.  And do NOT forget those peppers!

The only suggestion I have for you Jimmy would be to put a slice of Raw potato in while your cooking the veggies.. Potato pulls out the salt Which is also handy for all those other dishes that I mess up sooo badly!  Whis

They also sell alot of low sodium veggies these days! I know it is a pain in the keester but fresh veggies are best. Frozen would be close just read the package as tina said..

Rita thanks for the spud idea I will try it. I have so far bought fresh greens, lettuce etc as well as fruit. Yes canned foods have tons of sodium in them I spent an hour trying to find a Italian dressing salt free all I found is one low in sodium. Triss no I don't have one of those slow cooker things Billie would not use them so we never had but one after I took it back there has not been anymore. I  can fix my meals on weekends and freeze or store them real low temp to eat during the week.  Guess I have one thing going I like my greens raw as well as cauliflower. So raw fruit and greens and what veggies I decide I want to try would raw would be good. Just never been much on veggies mainly beef and cackle berries. Thanks for all the ideas hope I don't get too fat on them. My fruit  and salad I had for supper has me feeling fool as a tick.

My refrigerator now looks like a produce dept. What with Romain lettuce,Turnip and Collard greens (Iguana's are just going to have to learn to share ThumbUp) Spinach and Mustard greens. Cantaloupe , Apples,Peaches,Black Plums,Pears, Mango's and Kiwi fruit as well as cherry tomato's and big tomatoes off my one plant. Was talked into trying Kiwi never had it before it is different but good. So if I don't get healthy it just can't be done. Forgot the Cabbage,Eggplant and Cauliflower can't find Brussels sprouts nutz
