Root Ball Pruning

I'm going to move my ornamental grass along with everything else.  The problem I am running into is a lack of large pots that I can't afford to buy.  The ornamental grass has long runners that it uses to propogate new plants.  Is it ok to trim these back so I can put them in smaller pots?  Or will that harm the plant?  I'd also like the trim the root ball as a whole as well for the same reason.

  I can't see how it would hurt it Duh... I do it with my bonsai all the time and it is fine.. the only thing you don't really wanna mess with is the tap root..

I would think that with grasses it would be just fine to do some root pruning. I root prune many things, including a wisteria that lives in a whiskey barrel.
