Title: So Do You Sew#14

Just so we have it here for future things.

tammy, sometimes repairs are more satisfying, i think it is the frugal nature of taking something worn, and making it look new.

That sounds like a good deal.  I'm still hoping to figure out a way to keep the buttons on my pants.  i use the shank method which is suppose to be good but I still find myself replacing them often.

tammy, i use heavy duty upholstery thread for buttons that seem to pop off way too often...

I will get some of that because I definitely have some buttons that are real poppers.

here is an interesting project.  I bought at the quilt show a cutting board carrier.  It for the small one.  It looks like a portfolio with a velcro clasp and webbing handles.  My problem was that having my cutting board without my rotary cutter and rulers would be rather useless.  So I wanted to add pockets.  First on the agenda was the 6 x 24 inch ruler.  Which is just a bit longer than the carrier.  So I put it on diagonally and let a little bit come out the top corner.  That worked so it was on to the next one.  I wanted a pocket to carry the 12", 9", and other assorted square rulers.  For this I wanted a box pocket.

I know about box pockets because we had them on our utilities.  They were a pain to iron.  Now I've never made one in my life but I definitely know what they look like intimately from ironing the things.  So I made one this morning.  There was one wrong turn but I fixed it.  Before I sew it to the portfolio I wanted to sew the final pocket to that pocket front.  This is the one for the rotary cutters.  I'd like to put a flap and button on it but I am way to chicken so it will just be a regular pocket and it went on simply.  The final part of the project is sewing the square pocket on to the portfolio by hand.  I'm going to do that next.  As soon as I get up the courage.

I think I would add a flap with velcro to that box pocket to keep things from falling out if it gets jostled.

That's a very good idea.  I have some velcro around here somewhere.

So now it's all about getting it sewn down.

I added the velcro and finished sewing the pockets.  Now I've got all my stuff in it and I'm loving it.

I'm so excited.  this is the first hand sewn project that turned out that I've done in the last 42 years.   The last one was a dress for the society of creative anachronism.  I can't believe it, that was so easy to remember, and keeping track of what i did this morning is so hard.  I guess I have arrived at "that" time of life.

alright. the dust ruffle and rayne's table cloths are finished.  photo bucket loaded them upside down and the colors aren't true due to the flash, but here you go.

lyla's dust ruffle
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv322%2FJiffymouse%2F2016%2FLylasRuffle.jpg&hash=02c292b50195a5d88e8e0d3ac342e1aa72d77253) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Jiffymouse/media/2016/LylasRuffle.jpg.html)
the colors are a deep purple on the bottom, a mint dotted swiss next, lavender next, and then a nice paisley in pastels on a white background on top.

rayne's tablecoth
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv322%2FJiffymouse%2F2016%2FRaynesTablecloth.jpg&hash=e09e7c22103b29c2184a2286f8b7b4d9240a3315) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Jiffymouse/media/2016/RaynesTablecloth.jpg.html)
it is a nice medium pink (almost bubblegum colored) with a black and white cow print.  the tablecloths were pre-made (although one needed a "repair") to hang over a folding table (think hotel/buffet type event table).  i added the 12" ruffle (or there about) to 3 sides. leaving the back unencumbered for moving around.

Nice of you to take on projects like that when you work.  I'm not sure I'd have had the energy back then.

Post by: bayou girl on Apr 30, 2016, 09:28:29 PM
tina it is for lyla's crib.  and that's why it is 3 sides only.

tammy, i only work 20 hours a week. that is all i am willing to take on. and the projects are few and far inbetween.

thank you all for the kind words.  tina, it was tedious work, and i will be investing in a gathering foot for the machine.

I didn't know there was a gathering foot.  That sounds like a good thing to have.  Thanks for mentioning it Jenn.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: bayou girl on May 01, 2016, 10:16:15 PM
tammy, there are actually 2 types.  both are reasonably priced on amazon.  the simple one (gathering) is just that.  it's about $2.50 on amazon, the one i saw is for a "low shank" machine (the screw that holds the presser foot is less than an inch from the bottom) and really just gathers, much like you would if you put in a basting thread then pulled it. it's not exact, it doesn't do anything fancy, but you can gather and attach at the same time if you want with that foot.

the other type is also called a "ruffler" or "pleater" and it makes pleats.  really, just pleats.  you have the options of every stitch, every 6th stitch, or every 12th stitch, or not at all (not sure why you'd do that unless it was just because you were "between pleated areas". using the "every stitch" option is how you get the gathers... and you also have the option of pleating, or pleating while attaching.  this foot is available for low shank also, and you have the option of adjusting how far back the material that is tucked under goes.  singer has a couple of good videos on both of them, but i think i have done a fair job of expaining it.  i know you are on "metered" internet, so if i didn't do a good job, let me know and i'll try to clarify.

I wonder if they exist for the kenmore machine.  It is a low shank.  This is worth looking into.  Thanks for telling me.  You did a great job explaining.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: bayou girl on May 02, 2016, 09:54:27 PM
tammy they do.  if your machine has the screw on the outside of the shank to secure the presser foot to the shank, it will work with it.

tammy, the way that one is made, you make it like a tab, then fold the pointed end down, and sew on the button. i tried out the button sewing feature on the new machine, and i have to say, i much preferred to do it that way than to have to fight with it by hand.

i'm thinking about making some to sell.  different colors, shapes, and materials.  ellie said they are going for around $15-25.  what do y'all think?

I finished Lyla's blanket/quilt/duvet/comforter.  The middle was a duvet Kate got on sale.  she wanted the fabric quilted to it. it is 48x44 and done with a "stitch in the ditch" to make the quarters stay in place.  then edged with quilt binding.

the front, pieced, and stitched in the ditch

I decreased the waistband size in one pair of slacks.  Repaired the sides of my caftan.  And zigzagged the elastic back on a pair of my underwear.  They really aren't making clothing like they used to are they?

nope.  i have 3 pair of nearly new unders that require that elastic repair.  I hate having to do that.

They are not making anything with any longevity. It's a sad world.

Post by: duh on Aug 23, 2016, 07:20:55 AM
I've signed up for a beginning sewing class.  We are going to make a valance.  I made the curtains a few years ago.  They are a fall leaf pattern.  Of course that fabric isn't available now so I had to choose something else.

The kitchen has a wood color that would be golden oak if it didn't have pink in it.  And then the wallboard is that fruit pattern with pears on it in blue and purple.  I hate it but I haven't gotten up the gumption to paint it yet.  The counters are a dark evergreen.  So I decided to match the countertops and do the valance in the dark green.  I'm thinking that sandwiched between the counter and the valance will pull the curtains together into a cohesive look.  That's the hope anyway.

This is a lined valance.  I'm not sure why a person would do that but I'd like to learn how to line clothing and maybe this is a start.

Post by: bayou girl on Aug 23, 2016, 09:30:01 PM
tammy, i've done it and it is a good skill. and the reason someone would do it is that a) it is seen from outside or b) it makes the valance hang better, or both.

Cool I'll be looking at the hang.  i'm hoping it will look like the annings at outdoor cafes.

Also it may be done to help the fabric last a little longer as to sun damage.
Good luck!

Ok I'm willing to accept lined valances.  I'm looking forward to the class.

Today I put all of the donated fabric in the wash tub except for the bright pinks and reds.  Those I will do another day.  I don't think I could do two loads of hand washing on the same day.  I've agitated them all to bits and now they are soaking before the second round.  They are not coming out of there until they don't smell.

They are great fabrics, solids and small prints which are great for pieced quilts.

That's a good plan.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: duh on Aug 24, 2016, 02:22:35 PM
I rinsed them all which took over an hour.  now they are in the dryer in little mesh bags.  If they come out with a smell I'll iron them with the fabreeze.  I hope this works.  It proves that free isn't all that free.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: Tina on Aug 24, 2016, 04:32:54 PM
So they are little pieces of fabric?  I didn't realize that.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: duh on Aug 24, 2016, 05:19:08 PM
anywhere from a quarter of a yard to a yard would be my guess.  The smaller pieces I put in the scrap bag.  I'll deal with them as a quilt I think.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: Tina on Aug 24, 2016, 07:08:30 PM
I am not sure why you didn't just washer them in your machine then?
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: duh on Aug 24, 2016, 08:06:53 PM
as they unravel they tangle all together which I don't like having to deal with.  Also the smaller threads can get into the mechanics of the machine and mess it up.  I can't afford that.
Title: Re: So Do You Sew#14
Post by: duh on Aug 25, 2016, 08:12:40 AM
Today I ironed 3 more pieces of the fabric.  At this rate it will take me an entire week to get them all done.  But that would still get them finished before I go back to my next blooming nine patch class which means another chore done and done well.  I like that.

Yes it is good.  I noticed when I was ironing that some of these fabrics are very thin.  Transparent in fact.  I'm thinking if I backed them with a thin interfacing that might make them exceptable.  i've used transparent fabric before and been very displeased.

I was given the suggestion that I could use these fabrics for practicing my fmq'ing.  I'm loving that thought.

I bought the cutting disks to go with my dremel look-a-like so now I can cut down those spools to fit inside the bigger spools.  And who knows what other trouble I can get into.

I'm probably crazy and to be ignored but I think I liked the font on the first pillow better than the one on the second.  Like I said I probably should be ignored.  i love the idea of the tooth fairy pillow.

the original front on the pillow got threadbare in places, and had actual holes in others, not to mention stains i could not get out.  of course, it was only about 32 years old, so, not surprised.  That's why I redid it.

That is a really good reason.  Did you salvage the lace or were you able to find it's match?  i really like it.  Was it pre-gathered or did you do that.

i salvaged the lace. it was put on with a gathering (pleating) foot, with just a pleat about every inch and a half.

very excellent.

I made a valance with a scalloped edge.  I finished it this morning after I could get it next to the curtains it will go with and I'm glad I did.  The top ruffle on the curtains was taller than I thought and if I'd have finished the valance in class they would have peeked over the top of the valance.  Not what I wanted.  So it worked out wonderfully well.

Now I'm working on a supposedly simple little project for quilt club.  One of those things that I said I wasn't going to do right?

But it is useful so I'm doing it.  It is a stitch dictionary.  It will have every pattern and length my machine will do.  Fortunately mine only does a few things.  What the ladies with computerized machines will do I haven't a clue.  Anyway I did the first front of one page and made a number of mistakes.  My machine evidently doesn't like stitch length zero and one for straight stitch and so I ended up with the rats nest on the back side.  But since I wrote the wrong words on the top to indicate the stitch type I guess I can do that one again.  I do have 2 extra "sheets".  I think I'll need both of them.

So that is all the stitching news for now.

I managed to make the grid on another "page" of my fabric book.  slow going there but that is better than doing it wrong.  I got the interfacing done.  It's too short but I'll make it work.

I'm thinking it is just too hard to make a fabric book without help.  I think I'll just make little individual ones for each type of stitch and leave it like that.  I can always just sew the top of each page together when i'm done or use a grommet and ring binder.  i'm rather unhappy at the moment.  Maybe i'll check pinterest or something.

That's a good plan, Tammy.

I got help with the book idea so now it is totally stabilized and each page is marked for what will go there.  Now I need to set up my light table so I can draw the rest of the grids.

So this is what penny thinks of as a little project easily done in a month.  Hum,  I feel good that I manage to sew for over an hour.  I remember when it was 10 minutes at a time.  My mentor can sew all morning long.  I hope I can get to that place but I'm not there yet.

I've switched the pages around.   I think I put the post about my last booboo in the quilting thread.  I will be glad to be done with this project.  Really glad but when I push it something gets really messed up.

I stopped by Amy's shop and bought the adjustable stitch in the ditch foot and saw the gather foot.  I was tempted to get it too but decided to wait until I had something to do with it.

I plan to use the adjustable for machine binding if it work with the glue down technique.  If the top stitching is perfect I'll use it.  If not I won't.  I'll try it on the placemats first.

You guys know I'm not crafty right?  So I'm trying to wrap my brain around a fabric book.  Is it like the cloth books for children?  But instead of animal pictures on the pages you're putting all the stitches your machine will do?  So all the books will have a different number of pages depending on what each machine will do?  Wish you could post me a picture.

I received two boxes of fabrics from a lady who is giving fabric away.  One is of fabrics that will work for boys quilts and one is a floral.  There are many pieces that are large enough for backings.

Yes there certainly is.  I've separated out what will go to Queen Bee's and what will stay with me.

did another "page" in the stitch dictionary.  Found out that 2 is just a needle position change.  There was no reason to make ten pages of them.  Now 3 is a zig zag and I might want to use them there.  But I'm not reorganizing the pages again.  I'll just cut them apart and do a leather & hole binding.

Did 3 and 4 today so 5 through 9 left and that project can be bound.

I used the new sewing machine yesterday for the first time.  It was a dream.  It is so quiet compared to the kenmore and it doesn't bounce.

Pat showed me something called a zipper tab for the bag.  It gives the zipper a nice finished appearance on each end and I think might make it sturdier than just putting in the zipper.  I'm thinking topstitching the zipper after it is put in may also make it sturdier.  I'm very into sturdy as you can tell.

I've got to say snaps are a pain in the backside.  But the little tool i bought does help keep them in place which should save some time.

Pat was nice enough to give me her class instructions on the little bag we made to help me remember what we did.

Well I started out the morning by doing stitch pattern 5 in my stitch dictionary.  So I'm at the half way point.  I may not make the one month deadline that was suggested but I'm getting there.

I darned my first sock.  Now I'm wearing it and working on the second sock.  Why darn socks when it is just as cheap to buy them?  It's all Ollie's fault (discount store).  A couple of years ago they had a sale on socks and I bought a couple of pair.  They were the best socks ever!  So now I am trying to figure out how to make socks nice and cushy on the bottoms and still fit inside my shoes like they are.  So far so good.  Not pretty but they feel good and they fit inside the shoe.

When I made my tote I made the bottom wrong.  I hope to fix that this morning.  Then go rescue my fmq'ing foot from the car.
