Title: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: duh on Jan 22, 2011, 12:36:30 PM
I know it's terrible early for this topic but I couldn't resist.

Currently I'm still working on building my veggie garden.  I didn't get as much done last year as I wanted to.  But when I was at the dump yesterday I scored 4 large tires for the green peppers I want to have.

And I've begun screening my compost and adding it to the tiers when the weather permits.

My early crop will be romaine, radishes, and possible some other lettuces for right now.

I'm considering starting some tomatoes indoors since I have some room in the window for them.  But I keep the house so cold I'm not sure it is worth it.

Along with the lettuces and radishes, potatoes can go into the ground right now, Tammy. The tires would work well for those too.

Because potatoes are inexpensive compared to other veggies I'm not doing them.  But I'm sure the time will come when I'll have to do them as well.

My tire potatoes didn't do great last year.  The in ground ones did much better so I'll be going that route again.  Even though potatoes are cheap I love digging them up and Johnny loves giving them to people telling them that I grew them.

Gotta run duh, but I'm coming back to this thread later because it's been on my mind a lot lately.  Every year I say I'm taking a season off but then I can't stand it.

As far as planting now, my ground is hard as a brick from the cold.

I suggested the taters now because they are something you can grow and begin to eat before the rest of the garden is ready to plant with the spring stuff.  Peas can also go in now and they help fix nitrogen in the soil.

I love planting radishes and lettuce.  I bought greenhouse lettuce this morning.  I plant them first and then potatoes.  I am planning on moving our garden so Johnny's gonna have to get on the tractor or something and clean out a space.  I've been putting off doing anything because we had decided to move but today Johnny said he's been looking around and appreciates what we have and isn't sure he wants to leave it.  I think we're both to the point that if something falls into our laps we'll take it and move but we're not willing to go to any trouble for it.  So I'm planning to garden here.

It is awesome when you get something worth staying with.

I had no idea potatoes would grow that quickly.  I'll keep that in mind for next year.  I don't have any money until the loan payment is made and that will be March 3rd.

I may have some peas I'll look into that.

I want to do peas.  I tried to grow them last year but they didn't do good.  I think it got too hot to fast so I'm going to plant earlier this  year.

My first planting of pea's did great last year, the later crop didnt.

I'm planning to plant every space available this year. I've started my first round of peppers and tomatoes, they are on the seedling mat now. When those sprout, I'll move on to starting green crops...lettuces, chards, broccoli, ect.

I had some broccoli self seed from last year...I'm keeping an eye on the seedlings to see how they do. If they thrive, I'll do it that way from now on!

This fun for me to watch. If I were growing vegetable crops I would have planted the cool weather crops in November and would be eating from them now, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, etc. My hyacinth started blooming this week and I have narcissus ready to bloom in a week or two.
For this blessing I have long dry summers that fry everything.
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: duh on Jan 25, 2011, 01:56:35 PM
I am tempted to try growing from seed but I'm not keeping the house warm enough to get the peppers to germinate and I don't want to keep the shop light on for 12 hours a day either.  So this year for the first time I'll be buying 6 pepper plants and 6 tomato plants.
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden

It may end up being cheaper that way, Tammy.

Post by: duh on Jan 25, 2011, 05:48:08 PM
That's what I was thinking.  It will be a bunch easier too.
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: bestofour on Jan 25, 2011, 07:22:11 PM
Tammy, I was looking at Johnny's Seed Catalog today and thought about doing everything from seed but I've decided it will be cheaper and a lot easier to grow squash and tomatoes from plants, except for special tomatoes of course.

I think you' have enough of a spring and summer to direct sow seeds like me.  Maybe?  In the long run, time wise and not having to worry about the seedlings dampning off and all, it may turn out better.

Speaking of lettuce.   The greenhouse butter lettuce and red leaf lettuce I bought at the farmers market last week was so delicious that it didn't even need any salad dressing.   I've never tasted better and I've eaten it all.  I'm going back this weekend and hoping she's there.
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: duh on Jan 25, 2011, 07:55:20 PM
No there isn't time to direct sow tomato and peppers here because you need 80 to 90 degree soil temperature and we don't hit that until summer here.

I will be buying plants this year.  I am also going to be doing my peppers and tomatoes in containers.  Planning on getting some metal ones to help keep the soil warmer with our cooler weather.

Triss, what kind of containers?  Are you doing cherry tomatoes?

I have several large planters right now but none of them are metal.  I need to search for some of those.  I will do Roma, a yellow cherry sized, red cherry and an orange tomato that I cannot remember the variety of right at this moment.  I think it is Oregon something or other.

I may go with banana peppers rather than the bell hoping to get a sweet one rather than the rather bland types that are what I usually get.  I tried the gypsy year before last and wasn't impressed.

I like banana peppers a lot.  Also serranos and anaheims for the milder ones.

I can't do hot peppers at all.  Well actually I've gotten alittle better since I've gotten older.  But I wouldn't really take the time to grow them because they would be wasted.

I felt the exact same way yesterday.  I guess that's why it was so easy to get out there and plant the roses into their temporary pots.  I'm loving watching them grow.  Since they are inside I see every little new leaf.
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: duh on Feb 12, 2011, 08:02:05 AM
Well the veggie garden will be put off for another year.  Instead I'll be putting the money into 3 fruit trees and 3 nut trees.  Hopefully I'll be able to fit the three dwarf fruit trees along the drive.  The nut trees are going to go in the forested area.  Of course that means all the brush will have to be cleared and any necessary trees cut down so that the nut trees get enough sun.  The initial outlay will be 52.00 plus the cost of some bamboo stakes.  In the beginning the trees are very small so they don't need big stakes like I have in the 4 year old trees.

So the veggie garden will consist of any seeds I already have and can fit within the amount of compost and garden soil that I currently have.  That's not as much as I had hoped for.

Ok, 40 gallons of compost is moved to the first tier of the veggie bed, and it is incorporated with the top soil.  The chard is planted 9 inches apart and then wetted with a plant food rich solution.  I've officially started the growing season.  Woohoo.

Well I got out there and used up all that energy lol.  40 gallons of compost went on the second tier and got mixed in with the top soil.  And 1/3 of the row got planted with white radishes.  In two weeks I'll add red radishes and then 2 weeks after that I have a third radish to add to the row.  Do I like radishes?  Yeppers I do.  I wish I could say that I was done for the day but I can't.  I need to get 4 tomato and 4 pepper plants into starter cups so they are ready to go out side come mid April.  I'll try to get that done but no promises.

Wow! I need to get going on bringing dirt/compost in..though i need to find the cheapest place. Cant wait for when my garden is in mid bloom full of produce i love watching it grow!
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: duh on Feb 18, 2011, 10:17:05 AM
They have compost at our wal-mart.  It's 1.29 a bag.  I'm glad I made my own because at 40 gallons per tier with 5 tiers that's 200 gallons and a bag holds maybe 5 gallons each.  that could get expensive even for my little garden.

I just finished putting jalapeno and suffing peppers, and tomatoes in little starter yogurt cups and putting them in the sw facing window.  I hope they do well.  I need to put the heater under the peppers or they will never get started.  I keep the house way to cold for peppers but I have the kind I want in seed so I'll spend the money on the heating element rather than getting plants that may or maynot produce the peppers that I want.

My friend makes salsa so I'm hoping that if I grow the produce she'll make the salsa and I'll be able to have some.

I forgot the 80 gallons that went in the tires for the tomatoes and peppers.  Yeah I'm very glad I didn't try to do this with commercial compost.

I can understand that.  I haven't managed to can anything since I moved out here.  It's hard to pull out all the equipment for just one person.  But I'm sure I will once the fruit trees mature.  Fruits are so expensive at the stores.
Title: Re: 2011 Veggie Garden
Post by: duh on Feb 19, 2011, 10:12:52 AM
Ok the third tier is done.  I found out one thing.  Filling the big trash can and only making one trip up the hill is actually harder than filling the small ones and making multiple trips.  That was quite a suprise.  Although it was faster to use the big can.  Along with finishing that tier I also screen the rest of the compost.  So once I finish the last two tiers which won't be as hard as the first three since I actually filled them last fall so it's just adding new compost to the old and mixing it in.  I should have the rest of the compost for the fruit trees and possibly even some for the flower beds.  I can always hope.

Maybe next year I'll put in a raised bed for potatoes.  It depends on if I have the money.  I'm still thinking that it is just as cheap as buying them at the store but that could change any day.  My friend was telling me that it's been reported that food prices will see another hike in the March, April time frame.

I can understand that, I love playing in the dirt.

Today I went looking for information on romaine lettuce.  I've never quite gotten it right with lettuce.  So what I found out was that I needed a minimum soil temperature of 40 F to plant and that I would be good until the soil temperature reached about 80 F.  So I'm planning to plant around the 15th of march for my romaine.

This is exciting stuff for me.  i do love romaine lettuce.

Ok, I need to keep up with my schedule here...March 4th the second third of the radishes go in the ground.  I had to look all over for the post that mentioned when I had put the first bunch of radishes in the ground.  But I found it so now I just have to keep track of this post and I'll know when to plant again.  Wait a minute there is a calendar around here somewhere right?

Ok, it's not that type of calendar.  That's ok.  I figured out hot to make a calendar page in Excel and it looks really cool.

I planted the second wave of radishes so I'm in good shape and I have it on the calendar that the third group of radishes go in the ground on the 18th of March.

Of course before that group of radishes go in the ground I'll be planting the romaine lettuce.

Well today I planted the last of the white radishes for this year and I bought 16 heads of romaine lettuce for the veggie bed and got them all planted.  I had to plant the over flow into the swiss chard row since it wasn't doing anything.  The radishes from the first planting have started to sprout.  I'm excited about that.

I like this picture. It gives me a bigger idea of what you are doing as you talk about it.

Do you freeze or can veges because if you do beans would be better than squash.

I have the equipment but haven't done it by myself yet.  And I'm not sure I'm up to it.

I was just thinking for one person that's a big space for squash because as you know squash plants produce so many for so long and I've never canned or frozen either.  Guess people have but not me.  Love squash.  Green beans on the other hand can be used in lots of different recipes, don't seem to make as much for so long and can either be frozen or canned.

Today I put out red potatoes, onions, more lettuce. carrots and beets.  Hope it's not too late for carrots and beets.  And someone gave Johnny 6 Better Boy tomato plants that are already about 10 inches tall so I planted them too.  We'll see what happens with them.  I've never put out tomatoes this early and I have no idea where he bought them that there so big already.  They're in Bonnie cups.

squash freezes very well.  i usually cut it into bite sized chunks, and freeze a meal per bag.  toss it frozen into stir fry or whatever i am cooking, or steam it frozen.  the guys do not complain.  but honestly, you could put in one or two squash plants (i'd do a yellow and a zuc. and a butternut or acorn) then the rest of the space in beans/peas.  that's just me.

sheri let me know how the garden goes.  i'm getting the guys on board.  matthew is almost ready.  almost.  scott doesn't like gardening.  he lied when we got married.

Tell Scott "naughty, naughty" but I understand why he did it.  He couldn't stand the thought of loosing you to a gardener.  Men are like that, yeah they are.

That sounds like a good idea spliting up the space between a couple of different squashes and some beans.  I do like yellow and acorn squashes.
