Title: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Jul 25, 2016, 08:33:56 PM
:ScratchHead:  i think I'll continue this thread for all the little things that don't fit anywhere else in the quilting topics.  i might be wrong and it might not be used.  I just can't think well right now.

I received a package of fabric from an online quilting friend who had the task of cleaning out her sisters stash.  She also had diabetes so the lady thought of me when considering how to share out the fabric.  That is really cool.  There are several south western panels and art quilt fabrics so it is a great assemble of fabrics.  I'm a lucky girl.

That is so cool, Tammy. I am glad she thought of you.

Me too, she is a nice lady.

Today it is already to hot to quilt in the craftroom at the south end of the house.  So either I drag it all out into the great room and work on it in front of the a/c unit or give up on it until night time when I never manage to get back to it.

The Machine Applique class didn't take long at all which was good because i didn't get breakfast before I left the house.  I took the first meds of the day at 2pm not a good time.

I found out a lot of the problem with my machine applique was the wrong foot.  I needed an "open toe" foot.  (thank you jenn for saving the post)  So now I'll be able to see what I'm doing.  I also found out the difference between steam and seam and heat and bond.  Who knew?

I try Tina.

Last night I made a grid of my foot storage unit and now I have each foot compartment identified so I know what foot to use for what even if I forget my book like I did yesterday.

I was going to practice with the new foot today but my shoulder isn't up to it right now and I very seldom do anything in the evening unless it is hand work and today I'm not even willing to do that.  Hopefully tomorrow morning I'll be in shape to get something done at applique.

Now I am quilting the bargello placemat again.  I did the radio wave pattern on the major color stripe.  I did a little corner with the cobblestone.  And I did one section with the flower and vine pattern that i plan to use in one of the rectangles of the Blooming nine patch when it is time to quilt it.  So I'm getting some practice in which is good because these flowers are looking wonky.  I'm thinking if I continue like I did today I may be able to have it ready for friday's show and tell.  Wouldn't that be great.

I hope you can get it done to share.

I machine bound it and it is finished I'll have to redo the binding later on but for now i'm leaving it the way it is.  It's over 80 in the craft room and I can't do anything when it gets that hot.  I know you all suffer temperatures much higher.  I guess I'll just have to consider myself a wimp.

I put a new blade in the rotary cutter.  I hope it last awhile.  I bought 5 hoping that they would last a year.  Now I'm waiting for the iron to cool down so I can clean it again.  I don't know how it got so dirty so fast.  It seems like I just cleaned it.

I want to make the quilter's license plate tote but it is too hot to get in the craft room I did try and got a few little things done but I was sweating buckets.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted

Ok I frogged the placemat and top stitched it again.  i still don't like it so I'll probably rip it out again and hand bind it.  I probably won't do that until I've finished the rest of them.

Then I started the quilted license plate tote.  It is probably more sewing than quilting but i'm going to put it here anyway.

First off the lining material that I chose is actually a border fabric  so only about 16 inches wide. But I have oodles of it so I put two pieces of it with the black edges toward the outside.  And now it fits good and there is room for about a one inch binding on one side and straps so it is all working out.  At least I think it is, remember I'm not a sew-er so I could be very wrong.

Anyway then I cut the outside fabric into two halves and it is looking good.

Then I went to get the batting.  Nothing the right width, so I zigzagged two pieces together.  This time they came out without bobbles so I'm happy with that.  I sandwiched them with the spray adhesive and I'll pin them tomorrow.  I'd do it today but my back caught up with me.

Sorry for the long post.

I got the front pinned and I've begun the quilting process.  I'm quilting black on black and I can't see a thing that I am doing.  I'm planning on going around most of the license plates but I'm sure I'm going to miss some of them.  There will be many many ends to tuck in.

This is one of those quilt patterns where you quilt and quilt and never seem to get anywhere.  Cobblestone is like that too and I'm going to try and avoid it in future.

I'm crazy.  I just signed up for another class.  and in the middle of the wallet class.  When do I expect to get any of these projects done?  This one is a beginning sewing class to make a lined valance.

I used a meandering pattern for the back panel.  Now I need to make the handles and put it all together.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted

Made the straps, stitched them on.  put the back and front together.  now I just have to hand stitch on the binding/cuff and then do the re-enforcement on the top of the straps and i'll be done.  I think I did something wrong on making the bottom but I've decided i don't care.  So there,...lol.  I will try and get a picture and then transfer it over here to the internet computer when I can.

I don't get it...the first year doing bindings was easy now they are a pain in the unmentionables.  I had to unpin the peek-a-boo quilt and redo the corners before I could get even a so so mitered binding.  I got out the book and everything.  Grrrh.

Today I caught up on the ironing.  Don't ask me how I forget it yesterday but I did.  But it is all caught up now.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Aug 30, 2016, 08:10:26 AM
Down to 2 pieces of fabric to iron so that's on schedule.  And I've started back on the bargello placemats.  I'm doing all three at once rather one at a time.  i don't like coming to the end of the process and then having to do it all over again for the next one.  So I got rows one and two together and ironed and I've started rows 3 and 4.  There are 22 rows in all.  After the first run through then the couples go together then the groups until you just have two pieces to sew together.  It takes time but it is easier to do it that way because some have to be sewn from top to bottom and some have to be sewn from bottom to top or they curve the entire flimsy.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Aug 30, 2016, 04:28:57 PM
All the donated fabric is ironed and folded.  Now i just need to find a place to put it all.  and I'm on columns 7 and 8 on the bargellos.  I think I got one pathway hexagon added to the top yesterday and nothing done so far today.  Ah, well I can't win them all.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Aug 31, 2016, 08:05:46 AM
I thought I brought a picture of the fabrics over here but maybe I didn't.

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.quiltingboard.com%2Fattachments%2Fquiltingboard-challenges-contests-f21%2F557171d1472563174-fabrics-amy-3.jpg&hash=d1d6775e61e3a391a53438e1ba9737d784579fa8)

On the bargellos, I got to column 11, about the halfway point on the first set of seams today.  Now I'm putting them away until after the blooming nine patch top is finished.  That is going to take up all the space for the foreseeable future.

I've got my fingers crossed that i don't mess everything up with it all coming on top of each other like they are.

yeppers.

Today I tried machine applique.  I forgot about the mirror image thing when working on the back.  And the 8 inch letters are to small for what I want to do.  So it's really good that I tried a sample first.

Today to take a break from the blooming nine patch I cut and pieced two blocks called, "Peace and Plenty,"  I did them in pink fabrics that I don't think I would use for any other project.  These blocks are what is being requested for the Queen Bee Charity quilts that we are making in September and October.  After i install the software I'll try for pictures.

I have ripping in my future.  None of the blocks came together right.  I'm glad I wasn't working on the blooming nine patch when this happened.

Some days are diamonds and some are stones.  I think I'm in a riverbed full of the stones.

i wanted to do some community blocks for the club.  I got the pattern which I didn't really like cut out the pieces and then started having problems.  Couldn't sew the rows on right and spent a lot of time frogging.  Then when I put the rows together things just did not want to match up the way they should.  I'm embarrassed by the blocks.  And two blocks took 6 hours.  I couldn't believe it when I figured that out.

Going back to the blooming nine patch will be a breeze.

I have to pack up the machine and all the tools for class tomorrow.  I'm learning to do a valance for the curtains.  We never had valances when I was growing up.  I'll have to see what I think of them.

I have come to a belief that a quilt club and the military have something in common...I am constantly having to figure out what goes in the advance shipment.  And here I thought that when I moved here I'd never have to pack again...wrong O!

Other than that I'm fine.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Sep 12, 2016, 07:31:58 AM
...did I say I was fine?  (above)

The quilt club projects this year include making something that will show all your sewing machine stitches.  I think I wrote about this somewhere but I'm not sure where.  I want to do this because I want the finished product but it's proving more difficult than I would have thought.

First off I want to make it in the form of a book.  If I have a center fold and have a sandwiched leaf so it is basically two pieces of fabric wrong sides together with some stabilizer in between it gets real fun.   I messed up the page numbers twice and I'm not sure I've got them right even though I made a little sample book out of pieces of paper to mimic what I want.  I'm using 13 pieces of fabric that will fold in half.  I have to sew the stitches on the fabric before putting it together which makes it much harder because I don't know if I messed up until I start to put it together.

Why can't I ever choose anything easy to do?

I put this in the quilting topic because using the thick stabilizer I do have a sandwich even if it is very thin as far as battings go.  And of course I'm either going to have to do a bunch of blind stitching or get a handle on my top stitching.  So far I'm not very good at that.

I tried plowing onward and upward.  Got all of grid 2.1 done and all the stitches in place.  There is only one problem.  I did all the stitches in straight stitch which is grid 1.0.  If Penny knew me I would swear that she designed this project purely to torment me; but since, she doesn't that can't be it.  It's just a coincidence.

Bargello placemats - got rows 15/16 together and one of 16/17 together.  i don't think I could go much slower but it's suppose to be fun not work so I'm taking it slow.

Got all the couples together.  Started to put the quads together and I have a mistake.  I thought I had an easy fix but that didn't work either.  So I stopped.  I'll try another day.

Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Sep 20, 2016, 06:17:12 PM
Well I got done with the quads and was going for the halfs and got to the small ones and ran out of thread in the bobbin.  The worst place of course but I've got so much done that tomorrow will be a piece of cake I think.  Then it's the sandwiching, quilting, and binding to do.  Each will be quilted differently to help me understand how quilting can change the look of a quilt.  I'm looking forward to learning that bit.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted

No other errors found.  The tops are together and sandwiched.  I'm ready to start quilting tomorrow.  I've decided that every placemat will be quilted differently.  Just to see how much difference it makes.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Sep 22, 2016, 08:19:24 AM
well I wasn't liking the quilting on the second one so this morning i got out the leah day 365 quilt patterns.  i found several that I liked and I finished the placemat I was working on with some poinsettia designs.  I don't think they look like poinsettias but when you have to come up with 365 names for different patterns I would think that it would get pretty hard after a while.  I mean how many things can you call a spiral with petals?

So I finished the quilting, squared it and then put on a machine binding.  i used white glue and the iron to keep the binding in place which took care of 95% of the puckers and made the line of stitching stay where i wanted it for the most part and it looks straight.  So the adjustable stitch in the ditch pressor foot worked wonders.

I did make a mistake and bound the front first like I normally would and that meant that the machine stitching shows on the front in the top.  If I had done it reverse using a matching thread with the backing it wouldn't have showed, which would have been better.  But I still have two more placemats to practice on.

Bargello - placemat 3 is finished.  I machine bound it making the same mistake with the machine binding.  I need to start at the back and then do the front.  I'd like to stop messing that up.
Title: Re: Everything Quilted
Post by: duh on Sep 25, 2016, 06:27:53 AM
Bargello - placemat 4 is quilted.  I still need to square and then bind it.  going to try a 3/8 inch seam allowance this time.  I'm bound to get it right sooner or later.  At least that is the hope.

I picked up a new project for this winter.  It is a club project.  The second one since I promised myself that I wasn't doing any more of these.  It is a color project.  I got green as my color and my color scheme is split complementary.  Now something I would ever choose to do so it is a good one for me.  Now to see what I can do with it.  What ever I do it will be small.

Well the first plan for the club project was a bust, which might be a good thing.  I was going to get some burgundy colored fabric and just do a simple sashing around some focal blocks.  I wasn't happy with what i had but i was trying to force myself onward.  There was no burgandy color worthy of it's name so I decided to scrap that idea.  Now i'm thinking moyne star with the orange-red and burgandy for the star and the green for the background.  If I like it I might use it for one of my window quilts and kill two birds with one stone.  That would be nice.

I still forgot to bookmark it.  I'm such a nut.  Anyway it is the one where you leave a 10 inch unfinished piece on each end.  Pin the center of the ten inches, and then measure 1/2 the binding width from the pin for each piece of the binding and cut the excess off.  Then make the triangle out of the two ends and sew it down.  Comes out perfect.  For some reason I had forgotten the pin bit and was having an atrocious time.

So all 4 are done now and the 4th one I managed to remember to do the front first to glue down with white glue and to use the adjustable stitch in the ditch foot.
