Title: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Jun 24, 2016, 08:23:51 AM
I've started sandwiching the 10th charity quilt.  It is a sampler and I have no idea how to quilt it but hopefully something will come to me.  Right now I'm ironing the back and then I'll have to cut the binding from the backing.  I hate it when they leave it all together.

I'm going to use this thread for all of the charity quilts except the spanish bond that is still in process.  I counted and I've got 8 in process.  Way to many.

10th charity quilt has to go back.  It needs a split back to be able to fit and i've never done that.  i understand the theory but I'm not going to try it on my own.  I checked with my mentor Scott and she agrees so I put a note on it so I won't forget.  At least I got it ironed.

Good of you to make it easier for the next person to work on a project.

Thanks.

I ironed down the binding on quilt 9 the Oh Susannah john deere tractor quilt.  This will mean less fighting with it when I put it on.

I've started the binding process.  I wanted to hold it for applique or queen bee's but I just couldn't.  it bothered me just sitting there almost finished.  Who Knew!

showed Debbie the charity quilt and where I made a booboo on the grandmothers flower garden.  A young lady asked me to make her a quilt and I explained point blank why that wouldn't be possible and why most people would deny her uniess they were family.

People have no clue unless they quilt exactly what all go into it.

I've heard that is true as well.

My mom was a great one for wanting things made for her from anyone that was at all crafty.  Probably why she knew so few crafty people.  She would pay for the materials but never once offered to pay for the skill that went into it.

Well I'm still binding the little quilt.

I'm on the last 3rd of the binding of the john deere quilt.  I plan to work on it today.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Jun 28, 2016, 04:19:23 PM
I've broken the thread twice.  I hope it's because I don't know my own strength and not because there is something wrong with the thread.  It is a new spool and I'd hate for it to be bad.  I've only got an 1/8 to go but I'm stopping at this point.

I also noticed that I missed the top when i machine stitched the binding on.  I have no idea how to fix that unless I do an applique over it.  Possible in the shape of a sheep since there are sheep on the fabric as well as tractors.

well I finished the back of the binding although I may have to take part of it out to get to the mistake.

Post by: duh on Jun 30, 2016, 06:48:23 AM
Ok, I've got a note on that one so that I can fix it with Scott's help.  So now it is on to the new number 10.

This is all diamonds on some are inside squares and some are inside rectangles.  I'm not sure about the quilting other than stitch in the ditch.  That may be all that i do.  But for this morning I'll put the binding together fold and iron it.  That will be one thing done.

Actually took it with me today and Carol was able to tell me how to fix it.  I managed to take out the seam during the AA meeting and repin it.  So now some sewing and it is completely done and ready to wash and turn in.  Yeah.

I've sandwiched charity quilt 11 it is a diamond within a square block all different sizes that are in strips.  It is really pretty and where she had a motif fabric she fussy cut it so that the motif is in the center square.  This quilt took some real time to cut and piece.  I hope I can do it justice.

Pinned quilt 11 which is a diamond in the square pattern.  It is really pretty.  I wish it were mine.  So I'll have to keep that in mind for the future.

I've turned the quilt to the back to iron it one more time and check that there aren't any future puckers lurking.  I hope I catch them all before I begin the quilting.

Ok, so I don't get confused there are two quilts currently in process for Queen Bees.  #10 is the sampler that will be quilting in the meander stitch.

#11 is the diamond in a square which will be a wreath like quilting in the square to frame the diamond and then either outlining if it is a focal block or a flower if not.

Ok, I think I'm back on track.  I don't know for how long but I'm there.

that wasn't put up there right tammy.  most of the yarn is in neat or semi neat balls/skeins. and that is me. but i didn't dig into it today.  i just didn't have the "oomph".
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 11, 2016, 06:59:28 AM
ah, I understand.  Oomph has been hard to come by here too.  My charity quilts are waiting patiently for their turn which isn't coming anytime soon.  I'm slowing down on the blooming nine patch and that backs up everything else.

this morning I pinned the sandwich and rolled it up so it is ready to quilt.  I even got the machine bobbins done and the machine threaded.  Now I just have to get up the gumption to actually quilt.
Title: Re: charity quilts

You can do this, Tammy.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 23, 2016, 07:13:07 AM
#10 - the sampler.  Of course there is always something.  Today it was the spool the thread was on.  Yesterday I fought with a spool that kept wrapping the thread around the post and breaking.  So today I took a narrow plastic spool and cut it down to fit inside the larger spool so it couldn't jump around as much.  I ended up coating one of my dremel tools with plastic because it got hot.  Now I haven't got a clue how I will get the plastic off of the end of the bit.  Always something as I said.

The good news is that I got 1/2 of one block quilted in the all loops pattern.  There are nine blocks in all and if I can keep this up it shouldn't take me more than a month to finish.  I'd be happy with that.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 24, 2016, 07:46:10 AM
#10 - the sampler.  Yesterday I managed to get the rest of the first block quilted.  This morning I got another block quilted.  If I can do another later today without killing my back I may be able to get it off of the machine before the blooming nine patch goes back under the sewing machine.  That would be fantastic.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 24, 2016, 09:47:31 AM
#10 - the sampler.  I got another block done.  So three are done and six are left to do.  I'm feeling good.  Maybe I'll manage one more this afternoon if it doesn't get to hot.

Got half way through 4 and the bobbin ran out of thread.  So i used that as an excuse to stop.  Bad me.

Post by: duh on Aug 24, 2016, 05:21:04 PM
Nothing like a nap to rejuvenate me.  Block 4 is done.  It may have to be redone, the stitches got to big in some places.  I'll deal with that once I have the top done and can lay it out on the cutting table and look at the entire thing.  I just love frogging lol.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 25, 2016, 08:10:20 AM
#10 - the sampler.  I got blocks 5 and 6 done.  This quilt is fighting me big time.  Very aggravating.  I hope the last 3 go far smoother than the rest have.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 26, 2016, 07:47:19 AM
#10 - the sampler.  I got block 6 done.  I've still got two blocks, and the border to quilt and then put on the binding and the label.  I hope I can get another blocks done but with temperatures expected in the triple digits I expect I'll just lay around and cry.

The quilting is all done.  I put the binding together and now I just need to fold and iron it, machine bind the one side and then hand bind the other.  That is if I have time before the meeting next friday.  I hope it will cool done to the point that I can do the ironing this evening.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 27, 2016, 04:08:27 PM
The folding and ironing are all done.  Now I need to pin the binding on to the quilt.  I hope to do that this evening.  But it will depend on my back which has started to hurt.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 27, 2016, 08:48:52 PM
I got it done.  I'll save machine sewing it down until tomorrow.  A still small voice is telling me that I would have problems if I tried it tonight.  And I really don't need to push it.

considering it's only about 40 inches square it will probably go to the hospital for babies to go home with.  Even though it isn't in baby colors.

The binding job is awful.  Even waiting until this morning didn't help.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Aug 28, 2016, 08:43:34 PM
I took the pins out and redid the corners and repinned it.  I've got two sides hand sewn which I think is more than I have ever done in one evening.  So yeah!  I may get it done and the label on by wednesday.  That would be great even if I have to take some out and redo it after the business meeting on friday.  I don't ever want a project of mine to come under discussion at lunch at the queen bee meeting.   I don't think my fragile ego could take it.

Charity Quilt # 12 - Fall nine patch -  I didn't have much to do on this one.  Marilyn showed me how to do a hemmed quilt.  I'm not very good at top stitching yet.  But it did get done and then I hand appliqued the label which was small.  Then I tried my hand at thread painting and made to small leaves to cover to small holes.  I'll stitch them on and then this quilt will be ready to go where ever it is wanted.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in a square is on the machine.  I'm doing stitch in the ditch to secure it.  I'm not sure what will come after that, if anything.  I'm 1/4 finished.
Title: Re: charity quilts
Post by: duh on Oct 12, 2016, 07:33:02 AM
I got started on this one again.  I immediately had sewing machine problems but I kept at it until I got two more rows done.  Only about 6 rows to go on the stitch in the ditch.

#12 Charity Quilt is the country french provincial.  I'm planning so continuous line quilting of the animal silhouettes for the border and some filler quilting for the sashing and around the animal motifs.

#13 Charity Quilt is the yo-yo queen size repair.  I'd like to line it.  I'll have to see what we have fabric wise in the sweet treats.

#14 Charity Quilt is the gypsy wife's quilt.  And that should take me through the end of the year.

#13 Charity quilt:  Yo-yo.  It is out of the car and on the cutting table so I could spread it out.  I have all of the fabric out of the tote for the repairs and sorted by color.  I had to make another little table out of my rolling cart so that I had somewhere for the fabric.  I'm thinking I want to iron it all so it is ready to use when I need it.

#14 Charity quilt: Gypsy Wife.  This one is out of the car and on the dinning room table.  I don't plan to do anything with this until the cutting table is clear of other projects.  But it is ready when I am.

Charity quilt #11: Diamonds in a square - I have one side done and only two rows on the other side to do.  I should get done with it tomorrow or there abouts.

#13 Charity quilt:  Yo-yo repair.  I made a template for the yo-yo's it is to small.  I made it 2 1/2 inches and it should be 3.  i'll have to redo that.  I figured it out after I cut out 9 of them of course.  I made one yo-yo while at a meeting and ironed it when I got home.  I'm still wanting to make a lining for it.  I just can't see giving someone in need of charity a holey quilt.  Things should be practical as well as pretty.  Of course that means more work.

#14 Charity quilt:  Gypsy Wife.  I think I have some more orphan blocks in the scrap bag.  I know I still have the pieces of the peace and plenty blocks that I will use for this top.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Square in a diamond.  The stitch in the ditch is done.  I'm going to machine bind the front and then let someone else take it for binding.

#13 Charity Quilt:  The yo-yo is in process.  I knocked everything off the table this morning when I was working on the diamond in a square quilt.  So, the first thing I needed to do was pick up everything off of the floor.  Then I couldn't find the needles and had to go get more.  Then of course, I found them.  It was that kind of finicky stuff that dogged me.  I did get the yo-yo on to the first row but I still have one more side to sew.  As Carol said this is a tedious type of quilt.  I need to look up the history of the quilt for my documentation.  I enjoy that part of the research.

#11 Charity Quilt: Diamond in the Square.  (I see I named it the other way around above.)  I got the edges cut and there is one corner that is way out of square but there isn't anything I can do about it.  We are talking about 1 1/2 inches.  The binding with this one is very thin so I didn't have room to fudge it any.

#13 Charity Quilt:  Yellow Yo-yo quilt.  Row one is repaired.  It required replacing 3 yo-yo's and re-sew several others.  I don't know how many rows there are all together but I'm working on it one row at a time so I don't miss anything.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in the Square.  The binding is around the quilt I just have to end it.  I'm going to watch the tutorial again because I don't remember all the details.  But it is coming along.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  The batting and backing are ironed and spray basted together.  Tomorrow the top will be spray basted and then I can begin pinning.  I'm so slow.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in a Square.  I've begun the hand binding today.  I pinned it and started sewing it at the morning meeting.  The ladies loved the design.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  I'm still pinning.  I made silhouettes of the pig and a chick for the blank squares and I think the outside will just be a flowering vine.  I have some nice ones in my inspiration books.  I was so tempted by a continuous line drawing of farm stuff it isn't funny but I'm not sure I could pull it off.

I really want to see these.

I will take pictures when I finish them.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in a Square.  Watched the tutorial.  Finished the machine binding edge and it worked.  Pinned the other side and took it to a meeting.  i'm around the first corner but really have all four sides to go and the label.  Hopefully this one will be done by friday for the business meetings show and tell.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  I started meandering around the central block which is a duck or maybe a goose, I can't really tell the difference.  It looks good but it wears out my arms quickly.  I was thinking one day per block but now i'm thinking 2 days per block.  But that's ok.

# 13 Charity Quilt:  Yellow Yo-Yo Quilt.  It is spread out again and the first thing I noticed was I missed two seams on row one.  I will have to practice attention to detail on this one.  And maybe writing things down when I see them so I don't forget.  Or maybe some way of tagging them so I can find them again.  Something.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in a Square.  Got around the second corner so one short side is complete.  Need to do more per day to get it done by friday morning.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  I managed to complete the meandering quilting around the central block, yeah!

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in a Square.  I got around the 3rd corner.  It's funny because I started at a corner so I still have about 1/2 of the binding to hand sew.  But I have enough of a lead that I should make it comfortably as long as there are no unseen problems.  Knock on wood.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  I did the meander around the top middle block.  That was around a basket of flowers.  There were a couple of loops where I backed myself into a corner but other than that it isn't bad.  Well the tension isn't perfect so you see some blue thread from the bobbin but i'm going to live with that.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  I did the meander around the bottom middle block.  So maybe a quarter of the way done.  I'm happy with the progress on this one.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in the Square.  I'm on the home stretch on the binding.  I'm on the last long side.  Then all I have to do is sew on the label.  Loving the progress.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in the Square.  Finished the binding now it is on to the label.  I think i'll do it at the meeting today.  Then snap a picture and wash it and it is ready for friday.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  Did the pig block this morning.  I might have enough bobbin thread to do a sheep block.  We'll see I hope I remember to watch it carefully so I don't do a lot of quilting without thread in the bobbin.  i hate it when that happens.

#11 Charity Quilt:  Diamond in the Square.  It is in the wash now.  I snapped a couple of pictures earlier.  I'm still trying to find the perfect place to take pictures of the quilts when I'm done.  I'm so sad that Clyde quit taking the pictures for the club.

#12 Charity Quilt:  French Farm.  I got one of the two sheep blocks done.  It went pretty quickly except for the thread getting stuck at one point.  I might try and do the other one today who knows.  We'll see how i feel.
