Title: Spanish Bond Raggedy Brick Lap Quilt
Post by: duh on Mar 24, 2016, 06:14:11 PM
Don't the names of these quilts go on forever?

These are the ones that you cut the front the back in rectangles and squares and then but the batting 2 inches smaller then quilt all the bits together and then sew them raw edges out with a 1 inch seam.  These seem to go quickly although with all the miss cuts I had at the beginning I was getting frustrated.

I'm using all plaids and home spuns this time.  Trying for a masculine look.

So far all 16 squares are cut out and sandwiched and 4 of them are quilted.  Then all 64 of the rectangular batting pieces are cut out and 18 of the 128 fabric pieces that I need to cut are done.

Wish me luck.

It's moving right along.  I got a lot more cut and am ready to iron the next fabric for the next cut and I did probably another 4 of the squares as far as quilting.  I'm liking the results so far.

8 pieces cut for a total of 48 out of 128.  2 more squares quilted for a total of 9 out of 16.  Progress.  I really hoped I could move faster without sacrificing quality.  But sewing is not my forte and that remains true.  I'm glad my daughter can sew.

Is that hand sewing that gets you, Tammy? I sure have a problem with that part of any project.

believe t or not it's machine sewing that is the problem, or if I am really truthful it is everything about the sewing process that is not hand sewing lol.  I miss cut some more fabric.  Not as much as the other day but still...  I have 13 of the center squares done so that leaves 3 to do for a total of 16.  And I have 76 of the rectangles cut out of a total of 128.  52 still need to be cut before I can sandwich them and quilt them and then sew them together, bind the edge and then cut all the raw seams.  That's a lot to do.  I don't think I will be done in April.

All 128 pieces are cut.  All 16 centers are sandwiched and quilted.  2 of the first of 4 sets of 16 rectangles are done.  That's a mouthful.  I hit upon a plan that each "block" will be quilted with the same design on all 5 pieces.  So at least I'm not having to choose every time I pick up a piece.  So I'm happy with that.  I'm sorry that even when Clyde takes a picture of this the quilting won't show.

Well now I've got 6 of the first set of 16 done.  I've got to get more of these done per day or I'll be at it for 4 months.  Way to long.

Are these small blocks you are talking about, Tammy?
Title: Re: Spanish Bond Raggedy Brick Lap Quilt
Post by: duh on Mar 29, 2016, 09:15:07 PM
they will be 12 inch blocks when sewn together.  So medium sized I guess.  The entire quilt will be 48 x 48.  A good sized lap quilt.

With a bunch of pieces!

yes it is amazing how many pieces go into a patchwork.  Far more than I ever thought.  Today I did nine of the rectangles.  I'll have to do one over because I caught the backing and it folded under and got caught in the stitching.  I'll have to remember to pin the corners.

live and learn...I ripped out the stitching last night while watching tv and today I got it resewn.  and then I did one other brick so now I have  a total of ten done of the first 16.  Slow going I know.

I thought I had cut 16 of the first set, but I had only cut 12 and I'm out of those fabrics...fun.

God is good.  I found just enough fabric to make the other 4 bricks.  Explained why I had those 4 extra batting pieces.

need one and a half more rectangles done before the first set of 16 is done.  This is really slow.  I'd be done if I hadn't decided to do more intricate designs in the quilting.  But it's going to be worth it.  Or so I tell myself.

It is giving me an appreciation of the straight line patterns.  I seems I'm getting worse at them rather than better but maybe that's just this part of the curve?

Have to do chores today so may or may not get another block done today.  I'm hoping so since that would give me a whole row.  i really want to see what this looks like all put together.

Well my go got up and went in another direction yesterday.  I thought I would catch up today but the next two blocks are bug-a-boo's on the quilting patterns so it may not quite work out the way I had hoped.

Well I got another 2 bricks quilted.  If I can get the final two quilted and then the blocks made I'll have reached my goal for that quilt for the day.

I was hurting more than usual today and the trip to the grocery store took it out of me. I ended up falling asleep in the recliner around 4 and am just waking up. At least I'm not hurting so bad now. Chloe has ended up with a late nap also. And is actually still asleep. I'm sure Krys will be waking her as soon as she is done eating. Which I am doing now.

Yes and I've decided that the daily goal will not include saturdays and sundays so I have catch up incorporated into the system.  So one block a day is the goal monday through friday.  So 3 weeks should see all of the blocks finished and then it's sew them all together, one day; then cut the seams, two days; and then sew the binding, 3 days.  Done lol.  It writes up faster than it happens.  Lets see how close I can get to that.

I got to the last seam on today's goal block and the power went out.  I was not expecting it.  But I got up after my nap and got the final seam done.  I may not make all the other quilting goals today but I have good and sufficient reason I think.

Well I had to do today' block twice.  The first time I did it backwards.  Somedays are like that I suppose.  But it was a simple block and didn't take long.  So it's all good in the hood.

today I had to go into town so I only got the quilting done on this block.  I'll have to put it together tomorrow.  That puts me alittle behind but I can live with it.

I can work almost a half an hour now at the machine.  It makes a difference.  plus I think i work a little faster than I did.  I'm not sure if I'll work on this one this weekend or not.  It's nice to have a break.

got another brick done the other day.  One more brick today and then I can put two of the blocks together.  That's the plan for today.  I have to get a move on and get some of these completed so that there is room for the projects classes coming up over the next 3 months.

Well the block with the missed brick is frogged.  That will make quilting the brick that got missed easier.  And hopefully with the garden constellation gone I'll be able to make rapid progress.  I had hoped to be able to get it done by August 5, but with class on July 30th I don't think so.  Nice plan though.
Title: Re: Spanish Bond Raggedy Brick Lap Quilt
Post by: duh on Jul 29, 2016, 09:19:27 AM
Ok finished the missed brick block.  Tore out the block where the checkerboard was on the wrong side and redid that block.  Then took the block where the quilting was finished and finished it.  So I have exactly one row to go and then I can put it together and cut and bind it.  I might make the 19th deadline if I don't get to side tracked with the classes I am taking.

I think so too tina.  Today I finished quilting all the cream bricks.  So I have 3 blue and 3 red to do and then I can finish putting the blocks together.  Then the rows, then cutting the seam allowances, and finally binding it.  Still a lot to do.  Maybe I'll accomplish some more today.

I got the 3 blues done and found that there will still be one block to do. Aw well it's still progress.

two more blocks done.  So just 2 more to go which is 3 bricks then the blocks then the 4 rows.  I'm hoping if I push I can get it off of the sewing machine before thursday.
Title: Re: Spanish Bond Raggedy Brick Lap Quilt
Post by: duh on Aug 03, 2016, 06:31:47 AM
Well I pushed and the sewing machine pushed back.  I was having all kinds of problems with the bobbin, I didn't realize the problem was that the top thread had jumped out of it's hook.  Who knew?  I got one of the blocks done and I'm quilting the final two bricks.  But my shoulder gave out so I stopped.  Hopefully if I don't push it and give it a little rest I can still complete the blocks today.   So much to do so little time.
Title: Re: Spanish Bond Raggedy Brick Lap Quilt
Post by: duh on Aug 04, 2016, 08:14:02 AM
the blocks are finished, sewn into rows and sewn all together.  Now it is the cutting and washing that needs to be done.  I don't think I will finish today but it was a good effort.  And the cutting table is cleaned off and ready to lay out the blooming nine patch so I'm a happy camper.

watch out for the corners.  I still have a tendency to cut them off.

Phylis saw it and immediately tried to give it away and no one wanted it.  To bad because I would have liked to have it.
