Title: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Feb 23, 2016, 09:10:38 AM
This is a place for small stuff and anything quilted that doesn't require it's own topic.

In this case it is the christmas heart table runner.  I think this is attempt 4.  I fmq'ed around each heart and now I am filling the background with a vine of heart leaves.  I finally decided to use thread the same color as the background.  That way my amateurish work doesn't show quite as much.  So far I have gotten around one heart 7 more to go.

got to the third heart but only half way around.  It isn't perfect but it's ok.  Surprising how tired my arms get when I'm free motion quilting.

It sounds like a good one for Valentine's day too.

yes it would work for valentines day.  it's just the red and green that pushes it toward christmas for me.  I wonder where I'll store it the rest of the year so it doesn't get lost?

Halfway done, hurray!

I'm done with the table runner.  There is one really bad bobble but I'm going to live with it.  It is where the sandwich bobbled in the first place and I couldn't make it go flat.

Awesome, Tammy. You are probably the only person who will ever notice any glitches.

well other than the ladies at the quilt club.  My mentor is very good at finding things, which is good.

I've started cutting out fabric for a lap quilt for the queen bee's charity quilts.  It is a Spanish bond ragged quilt pattern.  It will require that I learn and practice the "Y" seam method of piecing a block.  A scary thought but worth doing.  That is one of the reasons for the queen bee's.  To teach and learn.  While making quilts for the needy.

I also have the fabric for a latin folk art quilt.  I'd like to make it large enough for a single bed.

They are each in their own way.  I started their documentation today.

Today I bought the fabric for the bargello placemats that I'm taking the class for.  I tried for spring colors we'll see how I did when the first one is finished.  I did the rainbow colors in pastels.

Trying to get a picture of the table runner here.

I like it too.  It might even work double duty for christmas and then for valentine's day.

Connie had a bunch of blocks that needed to be pieced.  I took a group of nine and pieced them this morning.  It isn't progress on any of my ongoing projects but it is something for the charity quilts so i'm going to count is as a brownie point.

I have to undo the blocks because there is a pucker in the center block.  Of course it had to be the center right?

i'm going to put the bargello here because it is placemats rather than a whole quilt.

The colors were chosen with a different idea in mind than what the designer's directions called for.  Oh well, next time I'll pull the directions out and read them before I chose the fabric.  Who knew.  But the more work on the top that happens the more i'm liking it at this point so it just might work.

This is a very picky pattern, so far we've cut the strips and sewn them together and then cut them again.  Each cut being different and to be placed in a specific location on the top.  So needless to say I've numbered every strip and only need to do it 3 more times for sets of 21 strips each.  Glad I have until next thursday to get it all done.

It sounds complicated with the planning, Tammy.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 13, 2016, 03:25:23 PM
If I go slow I can do it.  I got the rest of the sewing on the homework done and now I have the other 3 placemats to cut.  I think they are going to be pretty.
Title: Re: everything quilted

They sound like it, Tammy.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: bayou girl on May 13, 2016, 08:54:30 PM
i love the thought of bargello, but don't like the idea of the planning and execution.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 14, 2016, 07:34:11 AM
I'm working off of a pattern so I didn't have to worry about that.  Using the stripping method makes the execution much easier so far.  We will see.  I managed to get the first 3 placemats cut the second time, marked and ironed in the correct direction.  I'll try to get the 4th done on sunday.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 15, 2016, 07:16:44 AM
Did it!  now I'm busy turning all the strips into loops.  Considering I'm loopy to begin with this should be the easy part.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: Tina on May 15, 2016, 07:31:32 AM
That's funny, Tammy.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 15, 2016, 01:24:52 PM
Well I got one placemat looped.  2 more to go before thursday and then the last one thursday morning before class.  The only other thing left to do is cut the batting.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: Tina on May 15, 2016, 02:00:25 PM
Going to town on that, Tammy.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 16, 2016, 09:07:07 AM
I'm not looping the first placemat because that will be done at the class with the other sewing machine just in case mine wasn't a close enough match.  But I did get the rest looped.  And then I cut the batting and the backing.  I chose the spring like fabric.  It gives me two different spring placemats just by turning it over.  I like that idea.  Everything is loaded in the bag to go to class on thursday.  Now I'll just have to add my tools on wednesday night.

Good for you, Tammy.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 20, 2016, 06:55:25 AM
Well best laid plans so to speak, I didn't get the first placemat looped.  The rental machine just gave me problems until Jerry came in at the end of the class and retreaded it for me.  But I did get half of the second placemat put together.  It is work matching all of those seams even though I did really well with my 1/4 inch seam there is stretching so I had to go slow and make sure they all came close together at least.  I love how the fabrics turned out especially the stripped pieces.  I can't wait to show it to you.  But I have to get it finished first.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 20, 2016, 02:41:06 PM
tomorrow is bag lady day at the lqs so I went today to scope out the place.  I found the summer placemat pattern that I want.  It will show off the fabric in my stash really well.  And I have enough for 6 placemats.  So all I have to do is pay for the pattern at 20% off.  I'm liking it.   And yes this will be another project but i'm going to hold off starting it until after the blooming nine patch which will get it's own thread when the class starts or maybe sooner.

Put this in the wrong place first time around.

My mind boggles at your list of projects.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 21, 2016, 01:26:32 PM
at baglady day I got 2 yards for the future phoenix bay window quilt that I'm going to do when I grow up.  I got the matching blue for the spring placemats, it is so pretty.  And I got some daisy fabric for the summer placemats plus the pattern that I want to do them in.  Woohoo 50+ dollars in all.  I have to work on my greed, I really do.  But I've got to say it was fun.

Have you seen my quilt bucket list?  It seems to be growing.  It is suppose to go down not up.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on May 21, 2016, 01:27:53 PM
Oh I forgot.  The spring placemats, I put the 7/8th inch strips together this morning.  That was work.  And I still have it to do on 3 more placemats when the time comes.
Title: Re: everything quilted

I'm down to the last two strips on the first placemat.  I'm getting there.

I got all the scraps and fabrics put away in the white, black, yellow, and brown drawer.  Now just have to do the reds and blue drawers.  It is progress.  That shelf was FULL.

Progress as they say.  today I hope to finish the first spring placemat top.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jun 03, 2016, 07:10:30 AM
The first spring placemat top is finished.  I pulled out the next one that I had already separated the loops on and I did it at the wrong place.  So I'll have to sew them back up and then separate them at the correct places.  There is always something.  Quilting seems to be one of those crafts where my mind must not wonder off at all.  Well it is pretty although I have no idea when I might get a picture.

It's been an interesting experience.  There is only one quilt club meeting in July so it may be awhile but I'll get a picture.

Today I finished sandwiching the first placemat.  So I'll have to find something to practice the free motion quilting on since that is what I plan to do on it.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jun 05, 2016, 05:08:30 PM
did the practice and began outlining the project.  I hope all will go well.  I'm taking it easy so I don't reinjure my neck.  The pain from a pinched nerve is really awful.

Well we are going to lose our cameraman at the quilt club that's bad because he takes good pictures and gets them up on the net quickly.  I doubt we will replace him with someone better.

i have started fmq'ing the placemat.  It is going very slowly but that's ok.  It will get better as I get better.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jun 09, 2016, 10:37:21 AM
i'm doing a cobblestone pattern so it is very tight and will make for a very stiff placemat which is what I want.  Right now it is a blue/green color on a yellow orange part of the pattern so it really shows up.  i'm liking it.  The blue/green part of the pattern will be left bare and the green part will be a radio wave pattern also done tight to create stiffness.  i hope it looks as good as I picture it.

Well one half of the first strip of the 1st placemat is done.  I have to say I didn't know that a tight quilt pattern in a different color would change the color of the underlying fabric so much.  live and learn i guess.

I am taking my old wedding quilt to Linda so she can use it to make a quilt for the homeless.  it is too big for me to work on at home.  And her group puts fleece on as the backing to make them extra warm.  I really believe in this use for our charity quilts.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jun 17, 2016, 04:14:01 PM
I'm motivated.  I got in there and quilted another leg of the placemat.  So one more leg of that pattern and then the radio wave and I'll have finished the quilting on that one.  Then it is on to the other 5 lol.

Then I began refolding the stash around the stouffer's boxes that I'm using.  They were to tall to begin with and it made getting the drawers back in the frame hard so I am cutting them down so they fit.  So far it is working.  But it will take some time to get them all done.

Then I went on to the Grandma's Flower Garden...

I pulled in the tote with the quilt kits that everyone has seen at least once and pulled out three of them that I can straight stitch.  I'll see about getting them done before the meeting in july.  That will bring the total up to 10 for what went out today.

I started to work on the placemat again and ran out of bobbin thread.  So I was going to make two more but I actually ran out of the color I was using.  I'll have to see if I have any more of it.  It is always something.

So I'm about to get overwhelmed in the quilting arena.

Don't let it get to you, Tammy. When I feel overwhelmed it helps to change gears. Go out and pull a few weeds or something.

Well at the bag lady event for this month.  Joan was teaching her FMQ'ing class.  I'd already taken it but we talk a little, i guess it would qualify as chatting and I think i did ok.  Normally I don't do small talk at all well.  Having the quilting in common helped right along.

While i was there I picked up 3 spools of King Tut thread, 4 fat eighths, and one half yard of butterfly fabric that I just couldn't pass up.  It is so pretty.  And with the discount I spent 34 dollars.  Far less than it would have been full price.

One of the other ladies was there from the bargello class and since I had my placemat with me I showed it to her.  She hasn't sandwiched hers yet.  She is thinking about putting them all together into a wall hanging.  me I need the spring placemats.

i've pulled out one of the charity quilt kits.  I figure if I'm asking everyone else to do one I better get one done as well.  it is an Oh Susannah block.  Since I had such trouble with the last one I wan'ted another shot at it.  I've got it sandwiched and am going to use the walking foot to do straight line quilting.  I'm going to try for a dutch windmill wheel pattern in each block.  And then just some lines in the sashing.  i'm doing yellow thread on a yellow and green top.  Wish me luck.  I've got the first two lines across done.

I finished the quilting on the john deere quilt.  I'm very please.  I'll do the machine binding on the front and then leave the hand binding for applique or for queen bee's.  So I can start on the next one.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jun 23, 2016, 11:49:48 PM
I got the machine binding on.  I sewed a straight seam rather than an angled one since it is a striped fabric.  And I only ended up with the smallest pucker and I don't think it will show.

Maybe when it is done.

For today I managed to loop the second placemat.

Now comes the part that requires much attention.  I need to rip the seam between the different pieces to create the wave.

i've ripped the seams on columns 1 through 3 twice and now I'm having to redo 4 because I got that one wrong too.  Did I say I needed to pay attention?  Maybe the answer is I need adult supervision.

it hasn't gotten to that point yet.  If it were a large quilt rather than a placemat I'd probably be sticking it in the closet.  For now I am determined to get spring placemats and this is the second pattern I've tried.  I'm out of money so these are going to have to work.  Grrrrrrh and all that.

I'm half way through the 4th one and then it is on to piecing the tops together.  My hoped for deadline is July 29th.  It is getting pretty tight.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jul 11, 2016, 05:44:57 PM
Well they are all separated.  Now it's on to ironing them and piecing them.  Again I hope I can move quickly but with more accuracy for this step.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jul 12, 2016, 08:09:54 AM
I've ironed 36 strips and have 24 to go to complete all three.  It's progress.  I don't stand for very long periods at a time so that was my limit this morning.  I think their was one mistake but I'm leaving it for now.  I'll see what it looks like when I pin it.
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jul 14, 2016, 06:16:38 AM
finished the ironing.  Now I have to put the strips aside in favor of another project.

My bee's wax circle was completely worn out so I decided to try and fix it. Using an egg cup I melted the wax and then cooled it.  i had to trim it to get it to fit back in it's container but now I can use it for another year.  That makes me happy since money is back to being tight.

The quilts are now taking over the craft room, the dinning room, and the living room.  Where next?
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: Tina on Jul 14, 2016, 09:44:19 AM
What do you use the bees wax for, Tammy?
Title: Re: everything quilted
Post by: duh on Jul 14, 2016, 03:17:59 PM
I run the thread through it to stiffen the end so it is easier to thread the needle.  A softer bee's wax I use to make the thread move through the fabric easier.  It also keeps the thread together so it doesn't separate and knot up.
