Title: Carnivorous Plants, anyone?
Post by: plants n pots on Apr 15, 2007, 10:58:13 AM
I've never grown any carnivorous plants successfully before... well...
I've really only tried Venus Fly Trap twice for very brief times.

So, Diane, aka Angelblossom, very generously sent me a GORGEOUS pitcher plant last week, chock full with numerous hanging healthy pitchers!!!

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv161%2FLynneNY%2Fhouseplants2%2FDianespitcherplant24-09-07.jpg&hash=41d2864481be801fdcfff47887119d261c981fe8)

Isn't it fantastic???!!!
She had given this plant to her neighbor, but this neighbor is moving to Hawaii and gave it back to her - HOW LUCKY AM I???
This is a "baby" from Diane's mother plant - she surely knows what she's doing with it!!!

The neighbor had been growing it in her master bathroom.  I found a pot that matches the kids' bathroom yesterday, and it's now hanging in there by the window.  I'm not sure it will get enough light - I'll have to keep an eye on it, but I know for sure that it will get humidity, as no matter how many times we tell Amy to open the window a bit when she showers, she does not!

Don't you just love the colors of this plant???
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv161%2FLynneNY%2Fhouseplants2%2Fpitcherplant4-14-07.jpg&hash=e84839b6be7b5e4c33f44377d3ca52d73d37e2cc)

Two years ago, I had gotten some carnivorous cuttings for Brian in a plant swap, for part of his college graduation gift, along with the best book for these plants - The Savage Garden, by Peter D'Amato.  Well... he's really not a plant person and they quickly died, but he still has the book - 4 hour's drive from me!!! :-\  I did a google search on the book, and found out that the author has a store in California - California Carnivores. ;D  They have a terrific website, and I emailed them some questions, including the first picture of my new plant.  I was very pleased and surprised when the author, himself, emailed me back!!! He gave me some great info and was quite nice.

I'm posting a link to the slideshow on his website - if you've never seen pitcher plants before, or if you want to see some amazing plants, click here...

Anyone else grow these fascinating plants?

Lynne, I LOVE that plant! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyHeartThrob.gif&hash=3c5c7b1e151fdee79c95904ea159f4a5da68fb84) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyHeartThrob.gif&hash=3c5c7b1e151fdee79c95904ea159f4a5da68fb84) (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyHeartThrob.gif&hash=3c5c7b1e151fdee79c95904ea159f4a5da68fb84)  I can't keep stuff like that alive!  I've had those Venus Fly Traps that they sell at Walmart, but they never live past about 4 flys. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2Fdunno.gif&hash=fada6fbbb597e2a7be6ebe17db70f788244b4f78)

I think I read somewhere recently that they should be outside, so maybe I've been doing it wrong. (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FScratchHead.gif&hash=17a83761a3ec3e2d5035b2d70c4ad35baa8fb2f9)   What are you feeding that thing?

That is a beautiful plant, Lynne! So different from the regular "run-of-the-mill" plants...

You are very lucky to get that from Diane. That was so sweet of her to send it to you...

I watched the video, too. It was amazing! I can't believe all the plants he had potted up in kiddie pools. That is a great idea. You could move the pool in and out of the shade as needed...

Beautiful plant, Lynne. If you ever want to get rid of it, you know my address!  ;D

Lynne Diane also gave me my first Pitcher Plant I now have two hanging on my porch when it is overcast and or raining I hang them  on a J hook so they can get plenty of water. Make sure they only get Rain or distilled water. Diane and I both feed ours Crickets and meal worms in the winter when they are in the house rest of the time they will catch their own bugs. Last year I saw some paper wasp go into one of mine and not come out plant is very healthy. My pitchers dried upon mine and now they are making new pitchers. Main thing outsiode of watering Ignore them that is what Diane and I both do. Good luck,

What's your secret?  ???

Rain or distilled water only and ignore them. My big ones are in full sun right now after it starts getting hot will bring them onto the porch to protect from the sun.

I had a Venus Fly Trap years ago. It didn't live long. I gave it regular water, so I guess that is the reason... >:(

I named it Igor... ;D

Jimmy, those plants are simply AWESOME!

Are some of these the ones that you bought back in April?  I'm impressed when people can keep those things alive, cuz they've never worked for me.  I've never seen blossoms on a Venus Fly Trap before, but it's gorgeous! The pitchers on the Nepenthes plants boggle my mind (doesn't take much, though)! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FLaughingHead-1.gif&hash=05a3dc9ff24b72847170ac2481ddc7d2697e3f43)

Nice job!

 Patty glad you like them. Yes all but the large Nepenthes with all the pitchers were bought in April. When the blooms on the VFT die back it will have tiny black seeds I will try and get them to start other plants. I don't have many bugs flying around my porch ants crawl in these and never come back out. My paper wasp are all gone. Today I watched a a bumble bee went into a pitcher on one of my large pitcher plants and a black hornet crawled into a pitcher on the other large plant. If I manage to get a bunch started I will probably trade seed here or sell them somewhere like Traders Village or a flea market. Seem's to be a demand for them here for some reason.

It sounds like you have more than your fair share of bee-type bugs around there... no wonder carnivorous plants are in demand!

It amazes me that something so delicate looking actually does better out doors! :ScratchHead: It's pretty amazing too, that Mother Nature put a sneaky little twist like that in the food chain & made plants that eat bugs, cuz you mostly hear people fussing about the bugs that eat their plants!

 I might just look for a pitcher plant & see if I can keep one alive in my garden. It might get pretty healthy, with the bugs that seem to be moving in now! Do the pitcher plants make seeds too?

I didn't know that VFTs bloomed! :o That is fantastic, Jimmy! :grinnnn:

I ought to try again with the VFTs. We have so many bugs outside on the deck, it would be a living smorgasbord for them out there!  :laughmao:

The pitcher plants are so weird looking. I haven't found any around here, but have been keeping my eye out for them...

VFTs are good for flies I keep seeing other bugs crawling all over them Mine I posted a photo of now has 3 blooms can't wait till they are all in bloom. Pitcher plants outside of what may be native in your area will be hard to find in local stores except in spring. Look for out of the way nurseries go in and look for their bog plants and go through them I have found a lot of them don't know a pitcher plant or any Carnivorous plant from any other bog plant. I went in Mikes looking for bog plants they don't carry them but I had already been told about where they were so i checked and sure enough they had about 30 Sarracenia's (Native to the South East). The workers didn't know what they were so I got them at half price.

I haven't been out really to look for the VFT, but I know they are here in these wetlands. I am surprised that they haven't grown out there in the front three acres as boggy as it gets sometimes. ::)

I will look in Spring to see if I can find a pitcher plant. Those are really unique looking!

Jimmy, I bought a Carnivorous plant when BG & I were out & about this past weekend. It's a Pitcher plant, like your stand-up one. (I do like the other kind better, but they didn't have any.)

The tag says its "Alata Pubescent"  ...crossed with something else that I can't make out, cuz the nursery tag was written in pencil. :rolleyes1:
      (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FPtcherPlant7-30.jpg&hash=bf21d5e7c3f986ba2db67b1fa3076b4fc6504891)

I have it out on the patio in full sun... right?
And, I'm watering it with bottled water... right?
Am I supposed to put water inside the pitchers at all?

The info tag says that it'll go dormant during the winter & likes to be outside where the winters are not severe. I'd like to keep this one alive, now that I know someone who knows how & is willing to let me pick his brain! :wink5:

Patty DO NOT PUT WATER IN THE PITCHERS :Groaner:

It makes it own fluid to digest the bugs in these pitchers. It looks like my Judith Hindle
(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy156%2Fgreywolf1842%2FPitche%2520Plants%2520n%2520Bromeliads%2FSarraceniaPitcherPlant2.jpg&hash=71f5e92ab1c735c7cb4b7a807458df8f4a28757c)

Where did you get it? Most Nurseries can tell you what it is but if you got it from HD or Lowes they have no idea what they have.. It is a Sarracenia Alta but what sub species I don't know here is a link that may help you  http://www.botany.org/Carnivorous_Plants/index.php#Brocchinia
good luck

Thanx for the info & that link, Jimmy.  (Good site!)

I'd forgotten to water mine yesterday, & this morning I was afraid I'd killed it, cuz it seemed to look dry & almost brittle! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyNailbiting.gif&hash=a81916c179bdb649c7a84ed80bdaadf1812e4314) I think the pot it's in drains too fast, so I watered it from the bottom & left it sit in the (bottled) water for most of the day, & it seemed to perk up. Our humidity is realy low during the summer, so I really need to remember to watch & water.

It's those little things that might make a difference in whether or not I can keep this thing alive!

:Wow: What awesome and interesting plants you have there, Jimmy!  ;)  It looks like you have a knack with them. ;)  I enjoyed seeing all the pictures too!  Geesh, I didn't ever check this thread because I've never had a Carnivorous plant and I know absolutely nothing about them.  :dunno:

Patty S I found your plant  AL 09 Sarracenia alata - 'Pubescent Form' Deer Park Alabama :: Hope no one gets upset also here is the website where I found it goggleing  :laughmao:

http://www.pj-plants.co.uk/National_Colletion.htm
it is a good website  for Carnivorous plants.

BTW I got me 2 more VFT's today Wal-Mart had them and they are in great shape. Don't have any photo yet as I just got the soil made up soaked and them transplanted into it. Soil is 1-part peat moss to 1-part silica sand (not river or washed sand). You can find it in most Nurseries. Hope this helps you.

That's one of the reasons we have a forum, so link away!!

(You got VFTs from Wally World that were in good shape? :yikes: Maybe your store got smart & hired someone who knows something about plants!)

Can't wait to see your pics...I'm really starting to like this odd part of the plant world!

Jimmy, thank you for that link. It will help all new carnivorous plant people out.... :-*

I saw a poor, old VFT today at Lowe's marked down for clearance. I didn't buy it, because I think it was past reviving. I can't believe that anyone would expect to pay half-price for an almost dead, if not buried, plant... :(

Jimmy, there was an awesome Pitcher Plant entered into competition at our County Fair this week...
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2520plants%2FNeparithesSariguiran.jpg&hash=8ad34e3a0fe6c7d461832963482583e0b03df750)

Since none of my local friends have carnivorous plants, I've never had the chance to look at one of these up close & in person.  I thought it was so intriguing, how the stem of the blossom seems to be an extension of the main vein on the leaf! It meanders around a bit, then the pitcher turns up & leans against the stem!
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FMisc%2520plants%2FPitchCU.jpg&hash=98c6a2ca56889ca7100d02224aa55c7b98690a7d)

I've tried Googling what I think the tags says, but I don't get any results. Maybe you can figure it out. :ScratchHead:

Patty that is Beautiful wish I had one but on other side I "WILL" get one. Below is a description of that plant for you.

N. sanguinea - Genting Highlands Form - makes cylindrical pitchers reaching 6+ inches tall. Many color forms exist. This clone produces pitchers that are green to red with purplish interior spots and stripes on the peristome. Young plants are greener; older plants make the best red color in cool bright weather, such as late winter–early spring (photo). These can live happily in a terrarium for years but will outgrow a small terrarium unless pruned or trained horizontally. This species will tolerate cool (55°F) nights. Larger plants look good trained up a stick so the long pitchers can dangle elegantly.

Here is a link for a lot of these type plants.

Patty that would be a good idea just understand some people don't want to try cutting's or rhizomes fearing on damaging or killing their plant. The cutting are very easy while you have to have an good soil for them (garden dirt don't work) also I use reverse osmoses water on mine as salt and chemicals will kill the plants. If she gives you a cutting please remember me. :wink5:
I didn't post price I was given because I saw no point in it.  :smack:

Remember the Sarracenia alata that I bought 6 weeks ago? (Pic is in my 7/31 post.) There were some browned pitchers on it when I got it, but there were nice green ones too, & new ones were coming up at that time. Well, I was leaving it in the hot sun all day long & it dried out pretty bad once... (I don't suppose it was very happy with me for that), but after I talked to you on the phone about it, I put it where it only got sun for part of the day & I also started paying better attention to the watering. (Thought I'd killed it!) :Crybaby2: As it turned out, I didn't kill it, & there are several nice new ones coming up now.
     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FPitcherPlantSarraceniaAlata.jpg&hash=b6f7a715f63b3f071e7be82ef1546bb41732ea06)
My question is about the brown, half dead ones that are sitting there: I don't know if I caused that when I let it dry out too much, or if that's just what happens when they get older. :SmileyQmarks: Do I need to I pull those out of there, so the plant can use its energy for the babies, or should I leave them alone? (They actually look like they'd look pretty cool in a dried arrangement!) :wink5:

Reading back, I see that I never answered your question about where I got that pitcher plant. :SlapSelf: I got it in Eugene, at an awesome plant store that Sarah & I like a lot... they were having a going-out-of-business sale, cuz the owner wanted to do something other than own a plant store, & I got it for $10.00. (I'm just sick about them closing up shop, cuz anything I'd ever gotten there was so healthy, & they give you a sheet with complete care instructions for any plant you buy.)  >:(

Patty I leave my brown pitchers until the whole branch is brown then cut it off even with the top of the soil. They die and put out new ones all the time. Make sure to use only rain water or I buy reverse osmosis at 99 cent store for 69 cents. We have several places here (looks like the Dutch windmill) where you can buy reverse osmosis water for 25 cents a gallon if you have your own container. Patty I paid a lot for the latest Nepenthes all of $9.99 @ Krogers over on Arkansas and 303 they have 1 left better hurry and get it. :rofl1:

Thanx, Jimmy. I was really glad to see the new ones break through, cuz I thought I was watering a dead plant! I do use rain water. I put gallon jars out when it's gunna rain, so I can collect the water for my house plants, & I still have plenty from all the rain we got in the spring. I don't know why but around here Kroger as well as other stores get in plants like this from about July to October and sell them real cheap. In the spring Calloways nursery had a Nepenthes Gentle pitcher plant for $36.00 if I remember right. Just wish Kroger would get one of those for $9.99 I would buy them all up thier pitchers are a lot different frotn the Alata like I have.

Hey Jimmy, it's been a while since we've heard anything about your bug eaters... how are they doing?

My Sarracenia Alata has really put the babies out, these past couple weeks! :Yahoo: I figure that it must be pretty happy, in order to be doing that, but I have yet to see it eating any bugs or bees! :ScratchHead:

     (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2F2007%2520plants%2FSarraceniaAlata9-24.jpg&hash=29a993e44cbf9d633ea7a2dd652816955eabdbc4)
Something hitched a ride in its pot, & it's looking like it might be a melon or squash or a cucumber. :dunno: I think the weather will turn before it can get to the point where it can be identified... I just might dig it out of there & bring it inside, just to have something growing when everything else is starting to call it quits. :grinnnn:

Looks good Patty.   Don't let it freeze it can take low temps and if in the ground can take a few days below freezing  find it a dim place where it gets partial sun this winter so it can hibernate for a few weeks also it will get it's own food when it is warm outside the nectar attracts bugs. As for mine I am going to fire them as I got attacked by a hug swarm of paper wasp yesterday that had made a big nest in my lawn mower shed it is now gone but I spent Sunday in ER getting shot for the stings about 50 on my head and back I am very allergic to wasp stings so lucky to be here I guess. But other then that mine are loaded with Pitchers and putting out new shoots all the time. About once a month I feed mine a little fish emulsion a long with a drop of Super thrive to that gallon in the winter I also spray Super thrive on them as they are not getting as many bugs then.

GOOD GRAVY, JIMMY! (https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi75.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi309%2Fgottahavegraphics%2FSmileyNailbiting.gif&hash=a81916c179bdb649c7a84ed80bdaadf1812e4314) I saw your post earlier this week, then I got sick & wasn't very focused for a few days, & forgot to get back here & reply. Sorry! :kissies:

How are you doing now? That must have been one frightening experience for you! :scaredy: Were you trying to take care of the bee nest in the middle of the day, or did they just see you in "their" shed & went after you? (I would give you credit, that you KNOW not to mess with those things in the daylight!)

After what that ONE yellowjacket did to my little finger earlier this year, I just can't imagine what it would be like to have stings on my head... it throbbed & drove me batty for days, before the swelling went down, & the Benadryl made me feel groggy & stupid! About 2 weeks later, my whole finger started to peel, & THAT drove me batty too! I'd forgotten that that's where I'd been stung, until my DIL reminded me... I was getting ready to make an appointment with a dermatologist, cuz I thought I had some sorta skin condition! (So don't be surprised if you start shedding skin all over your head & back, come next week! It only lasts for a couple days, but you might get some strange looks from people... they might think you're part snake!) :yikes:

I can't locate my plant profile sheet that I got when I bought my Pitcher Plant, but if I recall, it said about the same thing you mentioned about winter care... (it can tolerate cold temps, but not hard freezes.) I'm sort of afraid to bring it in the house if it gets real cold like it did here last year, cuz I wouldn't want to get it used to the warm, then shove it back out into cooler temps.  If it does get down around freezing, I think the garage might be the best place for it, for a few weeks, huh? The garage gets cold, but it doesn't freeze out there.

Patty I thought they had all left since they abandoned their nest's on my porch. Went to get my mower they had moved to that shed. They probably took exception since I had 2 other sheds I could have gone into. They are all dead now at the ER they bathed my head and back in straight bleach to kill the venom and also pumped me full of wasp anti venom and benadryl. As I am deathly allergic to paper wasp as well as ground wasp (Texas yellow jackets.) Keep you Sarracenia in your garage or any dark place where it wont get below freezing very ofter for to long. It has to hibernate some keep check on the moisture put don't water very much just kinda damp so it doesnt dry out too wet and the roots will rot. Also that is a good time to start a cutting while it is cool. I plan to get a lot of cuttings off my Nepenthes Alata this fall as well as my fly traps. Good luck. Took me 4 times to get this to post computer keeps locking up.

The roof will be that green house cover also will have lights for heat as well as cloudy days. Have 2 shelves in it with room for more. I also have an electric heater I can put out there on the day or 2 it gets cold here.

Geesh, Jimmy, that really seems to be quite a find you got there with the Rubbermaid shed ,  and it sounds like you're all set to go!  ;) Just make sure you have adequate ventilation for the plants, but I guess you already knew that!   :SlapSelf:

That's great, those vents should do the job for you!!!  I use a small fan in my basement and it works great!   ;)
