Title: Simple Notes
Post by: wimc on Jan 30, 2009, 07:08:28 PM
Simple Notes is Windows only program I am developing, this is my main project, and it keeps my brain active, nothing fancy or spectacular by any means. Always be free, not even sure if its useful or not.

There is always notepad, type and save, type and save, etc., but with this small program there is no saving, program saves as you type, all saved within program itself, so there is no external file where text is saved at.

Note: when unzipped, there will be one .exe file (100% safe), what you can call a standalone file.

Added to post.

William, can you print from this?  I have just been using the Google Gadget "Scratch Pad", but find it inconvenient that I can't print from it. I tend to keep a running grocery list on it. When I run out of something, I add it. That way I don't forget to put it on a list made just prior to shopping.

On the to do list, next addition. Will add it within a week or 2.

Program right now is more or less what you call bare bones.

Cool, be sure to let us know when added. I will most definitely give it a good work out.

Its been put to the test, by me and others awhile ago, but of course, doesn't hurt others to put it to the test.

Plus you won't lose anything if electricity all the sudden goes out, you'll at least be able to continue where you left off at when electricity comes back on. Better then typing something for half hour and lose it all.

Better then typing something for half hour and lose it all.

I know that frustrations. It's happened to me more times than I'd like to admit. Finally broke down and set auto save to every 5 minutes. It's a pain when the auto save does it thing (or was back then with the slower computer I had), and I would still lose quite a bit, but no where near the "whole document".

I don't know why they don't make word processing programs save in real time like that. It would save so much aggravation for a lot of people.

Does your program have any kind of character limits or anything? Or could I write a novel with it?

Character limit is probably enough for writing a novel or close to it, but not sure.

To do list...

I am only doing this as a hobby, and I am no professional.

I wouldn't really use it to write a novel. I was just curious how far I could go before I "ran out of room"... lol

I admire folks that can write programs. Not something I could do. I appreciate the work you've done on this, and, for me anyway, it will be a very useful little program once I can print from it.  Thanks.

this is perfect, William!  My studies require me to take notes as I go - either from a research paper or from my image processing algorithm.

Great work!

What a nifty little program.  I am going to give it a test run as well.  I bet it will come in handy with my classwork.

Thanks Triss.

Not going to be much added, trying my best to keep it simple.

Please post if you encounter any problems, there is one issue that I know of, if you're running Windows 98, 98SE, 2000 you may get an error of a missing file, XP should be fine, no clue about Vista or Windows 7.

I will let you know about Vista as I am running that one here.

I am getting there.

Newly added features to File menu are Open, Save As and Print, having a slight issue with print though, been working on it since yesterday, its a bugger.

The download link in 1st post is dead.

William,  I removed the link.  When you post a new one I will insert it in your first post.  This is a neat little utility.

Thanks Jim.

It won't be a standalone file anymore, when available it will install like any other program, It'll be placed in Program Files (default location), under programs in the start menu, desktop shortcut will be added.

Open is know Import, Saves As is now Export. Still having issues with print, when I get print done need to do one other small thing before releasing it.

Print still not working, there is a message for now when clicking print, temporary workaround till print works is export to a file, then print.

Program installs and uninstaller is included.

Took a break from this when I was house sitting for my brother, I'll get back into it soon, have some reading to do and teach myself more.

I don't use Windows anymore and have no way to continue on developing program, just means that there will be no more releases, sorry.

That is a bummer cuz it is a great little program!

Thanks Triss, used it myself for small notes.

I may continue it sometime in the future, don't really know, and I have absolutely no experience developing programs in Linux.

Will be working on the program again soon, removed Linux and installed Windows again, installing Linux on a older computer sometime.

Edit: removing the print feature, can't seem to get anything to work, so best way to print is export to a text file, then print.

Good to hear you are back at it.  I'm sure there are going to be some folks here that will be waiting for your next release.

Post by: wimc on Apr 24, 2009, 04:03:59 PM
Yep, thanks Jim.

Releasing soon, without print.

Note: the export feature could be used for backup of content, just in case content is removed or replaced, just use the import to restore from the text file you exported.
