Over our Christmas holidays, we have been able to enjoy some pretty blooms in the house.
Two African Violets were showing off their pretty colors...

Do any of you have houseplants blooming this winter season?
-
I love the Deep dark Purple AV's they are my favorite.. I have an affliction for Dark purple.. I have not bought one flowerin plant in so long.. I forgot how nice it made it feel in the house
thanks for sharing Dianna!
-
I have a white with purple tinted edges AV that is currently in bloom. Other than that my Banana Pepper is going hog wild putting out blooms. I'm hand polinating it just for the fun of it.
-
That is awsome Duh have you gotten any peppers that are starting to grow yet?
-
No bloomers here. I dont get enough light for most blooming houseplants. My Clivia blooms when I put it outside in the spring and it gets real sunlight.
-
Nothing blooming here....I am doing good to keep them all alive this year  My Christmas cactus was almost killed by a frost a while back and my AV blooms are all dying back(the ones that are still alive, that is :rolleyes1: )
-
I have an AV blooming and a couple weeks ago my lipstick plant still had a flower or two but right now nothing else is in bloom.
-
Yes I do have one little tiny pepper started from the first two that I hand polinated. There are still four other blooms that are open on it.
But today I noticed I have spider mites so I'm going to have to find my spray botte and give them what for.
-
those are so pretty dianna! makes me want spring,
i had a few house plants that didnt make it from the dog n cat wars here.
-
Wow Dianna, the purple is so pretty and vibrant, very nice!!
Makes me want Spring now too.
-
I've never tried a "holiday" cactus. Maybe someday I will. But for right now I'm waiting to see the epi bloom in spring. At least I think it's spring when it likes to bloom. Hope so. It's more than big enough according to the lady that sent it to me.
-
I've never really had much luck with them, they seem to do well for a few months and then suddenly die, so i dont buy them anymore.
-
That would be a pain. I like the idea of flowers that bloom in the house. I've been tempted by the paperwhites but I'll wait until I can do some outdoors and check and see what I think of their smell. I would hate for something to come up that smelled bad in the house.
-
Here are my blooms, all taken this week.

Beautiful shots, Sarah!! I just love your guys' flowers....maybe I can get some next time. This has been a rough year for my plants
-
This AV decided it wanted to show its' color, too. Most of my AVs are rescues from WalMart and I have no clue what color they are til they bloom. Guess I need to write the names on them somewhere... :grinnnn:

Just curious but why have you got a mimosa in the house? Those things bring a new meaning to the word aggressive.
-
More great pictures everyone, i woudl say that your plants agree with that window Sarah!!
-
Sarah, I wish my house got that much sunlight! My old house had a sunporch with lots of light, not this one. My kitchen window has my impatiens and geranium in it, they give an occasional bloom over the winter.(I'll get a pic later if they're cooperating)

That is a sensitive plant...you know, the ones that close up when you touch them. I got it to get Mike interested in houseplants. It worked. I had to put the poor thing out of common reach, so it wasn't always being pestered. :rolleyes1:
Beautiful shots, Sarah!! I just love your guys' flowers....maybe I can get some next time. This has been a rough year for my plants
I know how you feel...last year, after the move, my plants were not looking too hot, either. :razberry:More great pictures everyone, i woudl say that your plants agree with that window Sarah!!
They sure love those windows. I'm glad i had them put in bigger windows while they were building. :dancingbunny:
-
Gorgeous flowers Sarah. My black pagoda is between blooming right now but I sure do love that plant!
-
That's a sensitive plant. That is interesting. I looks just like the other one.
-
It does look like the mimosa you are use to seeing, as it is a member of the same family.

-
Interesting info, I almost asked that but didn't. The mimosa's around here will open and close if they are threatened with weed killer or heat I know. those are just some of the things I've tried to kill them off with lol. Nothing works by the way.

(You're cheating, I just know it... that's not your waistline in the pic!) :laughmao:

I was wondering when someone would comment on the double meaning lol.

 nice bloomers bonnie! :laugh1:
-
My kalanchoe have started to bloom. Are anyone elses this early? I was suprised to see them bud so soon. I expected them more toward summer.
-
I wish mine were blooming. They did not do so well over the winter here and I hope they come back strong once it gets warmer.
-
they always drop their leaves during the winter. I'm not at all sure why. Is that what you are talking about?
I'm assuming because JV and I are farther south ours probably bloomed before yours. They bloom based on the amount of light they get so Maybe if you put a full spectrum light near them for a couple of hours they will start blooming?
-
Well two of my 3 plants look pretty dead. I have to actually get in there and clip away all the bad stuff and see what is left behind. I have them right now on the corner shelf above my bath tub. It gets indirect sun all and reflected light off the mirrors day long and it is very bright in there but not at all warm right now. It will get warmer though and I hope they make it.
-
i lost a few of my house plants this winter :Crybaby: coulda been lots of things, i didnt run the humidifier like i shoulda. there was a few realy cold days, maybe the cold got to em, my cats knocked a few over as well. just wasnt a good year for em.
but my spider plants got babies! :Yahoo: i had two large ones last year n i left them hanging on the porch n we gotta frost n i lost em, lucky i had babies from them in a jar with water, now my babies are grown up n havin babies. :giggle:
i cant belive how fast they grew in a year! i usaly start the babies n give em away,
-
My Kalanchoe died. I think I must have gotten water crazy and Kept it too wet.
-
I do have a peace lily blooming right now- first time for me....I don't do so well with them usually.
My Kalanchoe has spider mites.... :razberry: I can't get rid of those darn things.
-
spider mites I hate those things. I have an infestation of them in the kitchen. And it doesn't matter what I do everytime I put a plant in the kitchen the spider mites kill it. That's what happened to my oregano and my banana pepper this year. I got so upset. Grrrh I hate spider mites.
-
I have a spray that is made by Ortho....the name is escaping me right now, but it works very well. Hold on- I'll get the name. **zippppp**
Ortho- Systemic Insect Killer. Works GREAT!! :Yahoo: Spray the plant wait 7-10 days and spray again. I would suggest spraying outside, tho- it STINKS!!!
-
I've used rubbing alcohol for both spider mites & mealy bugs on my indoor plants, & it takes care of them in nothing flat. Rubbing alcohol is cheap... we have it at the dollar store here. (I used a sprayer from an empty windex bottle, & it fit on the alcohol bottle perfectly!)
I've read in a lot of places that people make a dilute solution... anywhere from 4 parts water to 3 parts rubbing alcohol, to equal amounts of both, but I've never had a problem using it full strength. :dunno:
Tonya, that Ortho- Systemic Insect Killer is great for aphids & Black Spot on roses. Works great... IF I remember to do it on a regular basis. :Whis: (This year, I really need to discipline myself, & write down the dates that I use it.) I don't know whether to send Aunt Bonnie to the corner for showing her bloomers or you for looking at them, Jimmy. :naughty: To be safe, both of you get in the corner! :laughmao:
-
She means OPPOSITE corners, not both in the same one, now. :Whis:
-
:Groaner: shucks Jim separate corners aint no fun at all
-
Thanks for the ideas for getting rid of spider mites. I'll try anything. Horrible little buggers.

Well, I'm glad you didn't post those either, Bonnie! :o  Actually, I usually don't come to this thread since I don't have any winter bloomers of either type!!! :smileyNo: Geesh, I can't believe what's been going on here and what I've been missing!!! :rofl1: :laugh1:
