Title: What did you do in the garden today? 2
Post by: duh on Apr 09, 2013, 06:09:53 PM
Ah, today I sat out on the deck this morning with my beverage.

I replaced two edging timbers.

I took a load of pictures and uploaded them to photobucket.

The squash is coming up in my straw bales.  I've got some seeds started in the green house in case the straw bales don't work out.  I also put out the tomato plants.  I'm not sure that they're big enough but I'm gonna find out.  I bought some egg plants and planted them and planted a row and half of beets.  The carrots ARE coming up but no sign of the peas so far.  I also put some beets in a big flower pot.  I've decided that instead of planting a bunch of flower pots I'm going to plant food pots with a flower stuck in here and there.  I planted the parsley seeds and tomorrow I'm planting thyme seeds.  Every year I planted bell peppers and every year I give most of them away.  Johnny won't eat them so I don't cook with them and I don't often eat raw bell peppers so I give them away or let them rot on the plant.  So this year I'm not planting any.  I also didn't plant any potatoes.  We do eat potatoes but they're too hard to keep for long in this heat.  I'll tell you a secret.  I didn't even harvest most of the potatoes I planted last year.  It got too hot and then it rained too much and the weeds took over and I was just too lazy to do it.  I'm hoping one or two of those potatoes will sprout and we'll have a few potatoes to go with the squash.   While at Lowe's today I came really close to buying an artichoke plant but didn't.  I've never cooked an artichoke but would really like to plant one anyway.  May go back and get one.

Who plants asparagus?  Johnny loves asparagus but from what I've read it's temperamental.

asparagus is an ongoing patch once it is started isn't it?  Don't get me to lying I really don't know.

I'm trying to stick to those veggies that either aren't available at all or those that are to expensive for me to afford.  So right now it is the tomatoes and the kolrabi.  Who knows what I'll see next that I can't live without.  I'm thinking cilantro because of the roasted corn and black bean salad that was so go last year.  It requires some cilantro in it and fresh would be best and then I could harvest the rest at the end of the growing season and dry it.  So pretty much a win-win.  Maybe I'll do that next week when I go back into town.

This afternoon I went out and watered the straw bales, tomato plants, and egg plants, planted a row of dill, row of basil, 2 rows of sun flowers, 1 row of marigolds.  I'm tired.

wow I'm tired just reading all of that.

I think I posted the gardening in the blog.  I'm so easily confused.

Well I used up all the pine bark mulch.  So I'm left with 3 bags of regular mulch that needs to wait until I weed before I put it down.  At least I'm pretty much sure that's the way it's suppose to go.

I finally got all of the unfinished compost in the same pile Yea me!  Now I can start grass cutting and raking the stuff from the yard.  That should keep me busy.

Got another bucket of compost dug up.  Raked up 99 gallons of leaves and put them in the upper compost pile.  At this rate I might be done taking in about 2 weeks.  I really need to move faster.

I'm going out and taking pictures.  I just needed to come in and cool off.  That only took 20 minutes.  At least I've finally stopped sweating.

You must have gotten a heavy rain when we got the sprinkle here.  Today I did good, there was the compost stuff and the veggie stuff and then I finally weeded the rest of the sidewalk and I put down 2 bags of play sand.  I figured out that once I get to maintenance level I'll need 7 bags of sand every spring.  I'm going to have to put that on my annual garden schedule.  I should be prepared to do it every may after the april showers.

Today I planted a row of bush beans and a row of cucumbers.  We went and bought a really cool bird bath and an arbor with a gate, so cute.  I also got some really long, like maybe 36 inch, garden forks that I'm using as garden stakes.  We got our stuff from Royal Gardens in Charlotte.  It's a speciality garden place that has the greatest stuff.

That sounds lovely, Sheri. Show pictures when you can. Do you still have half a barn out there?

Yes we do have part of the barn.  Jesus is taking it down a little at a time.  We have people who want the wood to recycle for furniture.

Well it was another good day for everything except my back which is killing me.  I moved the bronze mums to the birdbath flower bed and realized that the bed isn't really large enough for everything I want in it.  But that's ok.  I can always make it bigger.  Now they only thing left for that bed is the portulaca.  I'm not sure if I want to try putting them in pots to start them early or if I want to just seed the bed and see what happens.  I haven't decided yet.

I weeded the sidewalk bed and put down another bag of mulch, that leaves two bags of mulch to go.

I cut up one of the small dead trees.  It didn't net me much wood considering the amount of work involved.  I have to cut down the saplings that were in the way and clear a path through the left mold to make sure I had a clear way out incase something fell the wrong way.  Then do the actual cutting and stacking of the wood.  The nice thing was that this small tree won't need to be split.  It's less than 10 inches through the center.

I raked up 165 gallons of leaves out of the front yard.  That came from the area between the foundation bed and the shade bed.  I still have the largest area to do but I'll have to weed wack it before I rake that.  It has tall grasses throughout the entire thing where I didn't cut the grass at the end of the season last year.  So progress is being made.

We didn't do anything in the garden or yard today and now it's raining.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Why not just try direct seeding portulaca.  I think I remember doing that before and it worked out pretty well.

Are you going to have all these leaves again in the fall?
Title: Re: What did you do in the garden today? PT 2
Post by: duh on Apr 15, 2013, 07:02:02 AM
Yeppers every fall.  It comes from 2/3rds of my yard being trees.  But I don't mind the leaves at all.  They make all the compost.

It's been raining here too, so not much I can do except dig the hole for the crape myrtle.  That's if I can figure out where I want it.

We have tons of leaves too.  I'm not as happy about raking them up as you are. :grinnnn:

Today I put out bales and bales and bales of pine needles and I'm not finished.  Sometimes I regret decisions I make and this has turned into more work than I visualized  :SlapSelf:

I put out more squash and basil.  I must have been holding my mouth just right because every single seed Colby and I planted has sprouted and now I don't know where I'm going to put it all.

This is where we put a lot of our leaves.  This ditch was here when we moved in and it's so deep we couldn't see the bottom and if we threw something in it we never heard it hit bottom.  When we first looked at the house the real estate agent had told us it was used as a watering trough and we didn't pay that much attention but there's no way that could be correct because it never filled up with water.  After we moved in and thought about it a while we realized something was strange and called the city and were told that we're in the county, which we knew, and they said they couldn't help us.  I called every county office I could find a number for because there is definitely something weird about a gigantic ditch that never fills with rain water but never could get anyone to come take a look.  We put a little wire fence around it for a while and had  2 tandem truck loads of dirt dumped in but it was gone in a second so what we have done over the past 15 years is throw everything we can find in it.  When we gutted the kitchen everything went in the hole, when Johnny breaks out concrete it goes in the hole, if we cut down a tree it goes in the hole, and most of our leaves go in the hole.  The majority of the stuff in the hole is not biodegradable but we didn't know what else to do.  That ditch still never gets wet.  Where does the water go?  We haven't thrown anything heavy in it lately but I've seen the cats walk across it and the leaves sink down only a bit.  I'm not walking across it though.  I just hope that one day a massive sink hole doesn't suck us in.  Seriously.  I'm thinking of starting my calling again.  Johnny talked to the inspector who came to check everything out when we dug the well a few months back but he wasn't interested.

And the new bird bath that I also love.  The other one cracked and we fixed it once and it cracked again.

Johnny and I talked about the hole again last night and we're going to bring in some more dirt and see if we can tamp it down and see what happens.  Even with that it bothers me that water drains so quickly out of there.

I didn't think I would get anything done but I got out there at 7a.m. and didn't come back in until 8:30a.m. so I did really good.

The ditch is cut and raked into the upper compost pile.

The front is cut and raked back to the electric pole.

The dip is filled in with leaves and detrius.

The spirea bed is widened so that there is room for it to grow to twice it's size this year.

The guard on the weed wacker is fixed.

The cartridge on the weed wacker is full of line again.

The 150 ft electrical cord is wound up and put away.

So I'm feeling like I did a lot.  Of course my arms are sore but not as sore as in past years and I stayed out there working longer so I'm very satisfied with myself.

yesterday, i got 10 plants repotted, as follows:

the 2 blueberries went into 5 gallon buckets from their 1 gallon pots.  they weren't root bound, so i should be able to spend the year getting their bed ready and then put them out next year.  i'm excited, they have blueberries on them already

the fig tree went from a 1 gallon into a 5 gallon, but that is just for a while, it was very root bound, and as fast as they grow, it will have to go in the ground before the summer is out.

i got 2 or 3 buckets of veggies planted out, including squash, beans, etc.  and some plants moved from small pots into the 1 gallon buckets that were vacated by the trees.

i also splurged and got seeds from the sale rack (25% off) and some of them were things i did not already have.  i'm happy.

I love seeing the blueberries starting.  One of my plants has the berries starting.  The other is green and the third is probably dead.  Why can't a grow a third plant in that bed?  I have no idea.  I may actually invest next year in a deck compact blueberry bush just so I can taunt the rabbits with it.

I'm tempted by squash I just haven't done it yet.  Which seeds did you get?

So what did I do?  I bought some lisianthus seeds from parks and decided that spending money wasn't a good idea so I went out and dug up rocks.  I thought about jenn all the time I was doing it too.  I managed to get enough rocks to surround 6 of the peonies.  I even found one that I didn't know I had.  Fun huh?  And I cut up a load of saplings with the pruner and put them in the bottom compost pile.  So the right of way is clearer than it was and the shade garden is a bit more organized.  There is till loads to do before the end of spring but I'm making progress.

It's nice that you worked in your mom's garden.

I don't have enough energy to complete my garden.  But I did do 1 hour and 15 minutes today.

Right now the grass cutting is whipping my backside.  I got between the shade bed and the birdbath cut and raked, barely 99 gallons.

Then I weeded the rest of the sidewalk flower bed and mulched it.  Next will be taking the miniature roses out and and planting them.  Leaving enough room for the lisianthus.  Then I can color that bed done.

Well it's been a few days but I got out there today.  I had to put on long johns to do it but I did it.  I cut the grass at the top of the yard and I raked up the cut grass and the leaves.  Some I left along side the tree side because I was running out of energy but I got the rest in the compost pile.  I think it was about 66 gallons.

Then I got the weed wacker put away and the electrical cord neatly put away, that's always a bear.  Then I got the three minature roses planted in the sidewalk bed leaving plenty of room for the lisianthus when the seeds get here.  I'm excited about that.

I got the leaf mulch out of the left foundation bed so it is ready to be weeded and the gladiolus planted in the future bulb bed.  I'm going to be transplanting a lot in that bed.  I'd better make that a focus for tomorrow if the weather is good.

duh, Johnny will be proud of you for neatly putting away your electrical cord.   It aggravates him that I leave the water hose in a mess.  I can never get it coiled tightly or neatly enough to suit him.

When are your church services?  Seems like you work in your yard every day of the week.  I don't know how you do it.  I get over whelmed with all that needs to be done in this yard and it's never ending.  You know several years back I tillered  the grass on the sunny side of the house and made a wildflower garden and it was beautiful for 4 or 5 years but then I realized I was weeding or transplanting or composting every free second of my life and the drought would make everything look so pitiful so last year I tillered it up again and we planted grass.  It's my only full sun area so now I don't have a place to plant things that require full sun.  I miss the flowers.  Looking out my windows just now I think I might have a spot on the driveway side of the house where I can stick a few cone flowers.  Should have saved some seeds.

My church services are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30.  I garden from 6:00 a.m. to around 8:00 a.m.  Somewhere in there anyway.  This year I'd like to get a second session of gardening in in the afternoon between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. if possible.

Yes it is neverending.  Here are some things that I do to help me manage the work.  The shade bed doesn't get nearly the number of weeds in it that sunny beds do so that is my largest bed.

Weed barrier fabric in the sunny beds help keep the weeds down there.  Weed before the weeds have a chance to set seed.  I don't use preen because the seeds just sit there and accumulate until the year I don't use it and then I have a real mess.  Better to weed a little bit every year than be overwhelmed all at one time.

Most of my flower beds are structured in a way that I can reach clear across them without have to weed from both sides.  This means when I reach the end I'm done rather than having to then do the other side.

I cut alittle bit of the grass each day and rake it, then let it grow enough that I have something for the compost pile when I cut it the next time.

I weed or do other non-labor intensive work before the heavy labor stuff because after that I am done.

I hope this helps.

Today was rough.

I weeded the left foundation bed.
Dug up the ground and mixed the humus into the clay.
Removed the extra soil from the bed to use where I removed the mums in the sidewalk bed.
Dug a trench to put the gladiolus bulbs into the bulb bed.
Spread mulch over the bed.
Raked up the rest of the leaves at the top of the yard and put them into the compost pile.

Today was super light, probably to make up for yesterday.  I dead headed the daffodils and tulips right down to the bottom of the stems.  Then worked on the bottom compost pile.
I brought the compost and potting soil I'll use for the lisianthus onto the deck.  That way when the seeds arrive I can get right to work.  I thought they would be here by now.

Ok in the pots...I planted 8 Apeldoom Tulips they are a pinkish red tulip.  Then in two more pots I planted 18 crocused mixed colors.  I hope they manage to survive.  These were old bulbs that I got on sale and they looked very dried out.  Cross your fingers for me.

Ok, I planted the cilantro and watered it in.

I transplanted the mums that were crowded in my ditch bed.

I cut the grass that I missed between the shade bed and the house.

I raked into 3 piles the leaves and the grass clippings but that was all I could manage.

Hopefully this afternoon I'll be able to get out there and rake up the rest of the leaves and grass clippings and get them into the compost pile.  That's the plan at this point anyway.

Ok, The grass and the leaves from the front are all in a compost pile.

The compost pile is raked back into a 5x5x5 pile so the front and the back match.  (no obsessive/compulsive here)

The mums that were running into the sidewalk have been moved to the mailbox bed.  It's nice to have flowers there again.  When I moved the mailbox to the other side of the mailbox I moved the mums that were there to the ditch bed.  And I hadn't planted anything in the new spot.  So now it has some color.  Yeah!

The huge weeds that was intimidating the hosta between the house and the shed has been removed.  Now the hosta is free to get going.

I noticed while I was out there that one of the miniature roses has buds on it.  Can't wait to see the flowers.

It's raining so I don't have to do anything.  I'm so glad to see a soaking rain.  I was starting to plan on how I could get everything watered with the outside faucet broken.

Now the plants are getting the water they need, the composts are getting wetted down like they need.  It's great.

I might take the pruners out there and go after the saplings.  The trees really want to take over.

All done.  I ran into a problem though.  The seeds are pelletized and it says they need light to germinate.  That sounds like a conflict to me.  I hope the shell disolves over the next few days.

They haven't dissolved yet.  I'm spraying water right on top of them hoping for the best.

I can't get photobucket to play nice or I would have pictures of the garden.

Today I couldn't resist some rusty orange asian lilies at wal-mart.  And of course once I start putting things in a basket I can't seem to stop.  That will teach me to go to the store without a reason.

So I ended up with something called an Annual Dahlia.  I thought Dahlia's were tubers.  Anyway it is so cute.  It's burgandy with white inner petals.  I really like it.  Not in my color palette but sometimes I just have to go with pretty.

Then there was this bush like thing that they say is a perennial gaudia.  It looks like a purple bush so I bought it because it was on special for 3.33.  And who can resist that?

Everything is planted except that last one.  Trying to dig into clay is hard.

And the day before and the day before...

It's rained so much lately that I haven't been able to get in mine to get it planted.  We have 9 tomato plants that the neighbor gave us and that is all.  It's about too late to do much now.   :tapfoot1:

Maybe for the long growing season ones to do from seed but there is still plenty that requires a shorter growing season.  Green onions, carrots, potatoes, and if you buy plants you should be able to do peppers right?  Don't get depressed you can do it.  That's what I keep telling myself and I only have about a 25 percent success rate.  Maybe I shouldn't have said that.

I did manage to get out there and plant the gauda.  I hope it does well in the spot I chose for it.  I hope it isn't too shady.

Then I did it.  I transplanted the pine tree to the front yard tree line that runs along the property edge.  I so hope it works.  It's a good looking little tree and I hope it grows there.  Pine trees remind me of home so I like having them in the shady areas.

I just need them to stop sprouting in the septic field.

The septic field is a swamp, not mud hole but swamp.  I sunk up to my ankles and almost fell over.  I'm so stubborn.  I did get the blackberry canes and runner root out of the blueberry bed and the composting area.  That was one long runner.  I guess they like compost too.  I tried to dig up the other pine tree that is to close to the septic tank but there is a huge root running right by it and between that and the soaked clay I was having a hard time staying upright.  So I cleaned off the shovel, weeded the pot of tulips that I need to move to the other bulb bed.  Took the trellis for the tomato out and put it over the plant.  That tomato looks like it is developing rust.  I'm worried.  But I'll talk about that in veggies.

And that's all I accomplished but considering that it started to rain again after about 20 minutes I'm going to consider it a success.

Today I got out there and weeded the sidewalk bed again, The sidewalk again, and the foundation bed on the right side as your looking at the house.  I also pruned back the mums in the foundation bed on the right side.

I had planned to cut grass after that.  It didn't happen.  Maybe later.

I cut the grass today.

tomorrow weather permitting, I'll weed the side foundation bed, bayer the roses, and cut some more grass and rake it into the lower compost pile.

I was looking at the garden and noticed that the down slope side of the new gauda didn't get dirt.  So I dug up 2 1/2 gallons of dirt from around the pine tree that i'm digging up and put that around the gauda.  I hope that fixes the problem.

Then I pinched off a couple of the suckers on the tomato plant.

One more quick run out to the garden and I picked up a bucket full of rocks to complete edging around two more of the peonies.  I believe I have to more to edge to get them all.  But about the time I think I've got them all more appear.  I'm glad I at least got out there.

It's a product that fertilizes, protects against black spot, and protects against bugs.  I have to treat the roses every 6 weeks.

Ok, I got some thing done in the garden.  Not all that I wanted.  It rained again last night so the ground is very soft.  So I dug up the other pine tree and tossed it on the compost pile.  And then some of the lower branches of one of the chestnut oak was sweeping the ground so I pruned several of those.  Underneath I found a forest of seedlings from the tree.  I dug up about 7 before I surrendered.  I tried to dig up the other tree that is in the wrong place but it has put down some roots.  So I'll probably have to make a big hole to get at them.

I didn't have enough umph to do it today.  I decided that since I am digging up all of this soil I'd put it in buckets and haul it up to the tires and use it as the garden soil.  Cheaper than buying it.  Found out very quickly that wet clay is much heavier than compost.  I managed one trip with 2 1/2 gallons of clay to one tire.  Now I just have another 2 1/2 gallons to transport to that tire to give it the 50% garden soil I want.  Then there are 11 more after that.  Each one about 3 feet farther away than the last one.  Does it sound daunting?  It does to me.

While I was in that area I found 3 big rocks for around the peonies.  I loaded them in my bucket and made it as far as the shed before the rocks won and I had to put down the bucket.  I have twice that distance to go before I reach the peonies.  I feel like such a whimp.

The blackberries are of course trying to take over so I dug up a handful of them while I was at it.

So I did something even if I didn't get as much done as I had hoped.

yes, jen picking counts.  Chewing counts too.

I pulled a few weeds from around the peas.  I've got blooms on my straw bale squash.  Yippee.

Whew, I'm making progress in my endurance and in the garden.  So far I have managed to cut 1/3 of the back yard, transplant one pot of tulips to the front foundation bed on the right side of the door.  And then I got the roses treated finally.  First day the ground hasn't been saturated with rain.  And I got the 3 medium sized rocks up to the peonies and placed.

I hope to manage a second session out there to rake up the grass and get it incorporated into the bottom compost pile.  That will be fun.

Jenn your blackberries are ready for harvest already?  Mine is full of blooms but that is it.  Now there are blueberries on the bush but they aren't blue yet and the rabbits have already invaded the garden.  They are out there every morning.

Best I can try when I get back out there.  It isn't in bloom but you can see the leaves.  Would that be enough?

Did the raking.  I had no idea that the raking and incorporating it in to the compost pile would take an hour.  That's one time consuming task.

My hope is to work on the side foundation bed Thursday.  Tomorrow I'll be at social services and then time permitting the meeting in altavista.

tammy, i have 2 kinds of blackberries.  the kind commonly called dew berries (on briars, not canes) and then i have some that are on canes.  the ones on the briars are all but done.  and if we don't get more rain soon, they will be done.  the ones on the canes seem to be a cross between blackberries and raspberries and are "gifts" from birds.  they too will not be edible if we don't get some rain soon.  but they are totally out of bloom and the berries are about as big as the end of my pinky, give or take.

as for my blueberries, they are there, and growing but it will be a bit before they are actually edible.  they are much slower to mature.  which is fine with me.  but i'll have enough for a bowl or two of cereal :)

as for what i did today, absolutely nothing.  i did go to a store to check out their trees on clearance, and decided that i didn't want anything they had for the price they had it.  so  i hope tomorrow i get more done.

Hasn't the weather been something?  The church sent me a new ginea impatience.  I put it outside and it got so cold over night it killed the plant.  Who knew in May?

My blackberries are blooms, my blueberries are green, and my plums are none existant because of the late frosts.

So far this morning I've managed to put away the corner edging of the foundation bed and get all the weeds and grass out of there.  Then I went to the back and pulled apart the compost pile so it would be ready for the grass cuttings.  Then I didn't have the energy left to cut the grass.  Isn't that the way it goes?

I did manage to get that big thistle out of the middle of a clump of daffodil leaves without damaging the daffodils.  At least I don't think I damaged them.  All I can do is hope.

I got up early to beat the heat and hoed a few weeds out of the garden.  The beans were a bit wilted so I watered everything.  Hard to believe we need rain but we do.  The garden is clean except for the carrot rows and it's going to take a while to get all that grass out.  If we don't cage our tomatoes tonight it will be too late.

I love being out there first thing when it's just me and the bluebirds.

You know planting late this year may be a blessing.  You didn't get the seeds rotted from all the rain or have the seedlings washed away.  And these late frosted didn't get your garden either.

Good luck and I hope you have a great crop.

Isn't it nice when your garden is clean?  I hope to manage that some day.

i need to get a tomato cage.  i've never had a tomato plant do as well as this one is doing, so i've never bought any.  so far, so good.

the only thing of any use i did today was plant some more gourd seeds (a different kind than last time) and some morning glories and moon flowers.  i never knew moon flower seeds were so big!

Well it was a good morning sort of.  I got somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the back yard grass cut.  Mixed with the browns it equaled 3.5 buckets of grass clippings.  Then I got them into the compost pile which is all neatly piled up again.

The most exciting thing was I got to take a picture of my first peony bloom of the year.  And it is the peony that Penny sent me when I moved in here.

Maybe tomorrow?  I do that all the time.  If I don't stamp the list of things to do to my forehead something gets forgotten.  And my lists are having to get more and more detailed or I don't understand what I've written.

Well it rained again last night so grass cutting is out for today.  So I decided that I would weed the peppers and guess what I found 4 tomato plants.  What a suprise huh?  I'm not sure if they are from Judy's compost or mine but either way I'm happy to see them.  That will increase my tomato plants by 200 percent.  And they are free!  Loving it!  But of course, it means more work doesn't it?

First I have to weed the next 4 tires.  Then dig up soil from the botton of the drain field where it all ends up on this slope.  Then I have to strain out the roots and rocks.  Then tote it up the hill to the tires.  4 trips for each tomato plant 16 trips in all.  So how many did I do today?  2  I'll go out as soon as my arms quit hurting and try and do another 2.

Why is it that no matter what I do to knock things off my to do list something always comes along to fill the space so the list never gets shorter.
Title: Re: What did you do in the garden today? 2

I went out and did another two.  Then I went to get gas for the car so I wouldn't have to do it monday.

There was alittle left over in the checking account so I decided to buy some compost and top soil for the tires rather than digging and screening my stuff.  I was tired by then.  So I remembered that I had figured out that it was 16 trips.  But I forgot that it was because I was only carrying 1/2 buckets loads because of the weight.  So I got 8 40 lb bags of soil/compost.

So I had enough for 6 tires rather than 4 and topping off the two pepper plants that lost some soil in the transplants.  Then I put 60 lbs in the birdbath bed since that one money plant was comming out of the ground.  It should be solid in there now.  And I have a nice 1inch of top soil for the portulacas that will go in there the end of next month.

I'm tired and dirty at the moment and as soon as I recover I'm going to go practice being a prune in the tub.

I have two lovely squash plants that need to go somewhere but since the squash bug saga of 2012 I don't want to put them in the garden with the other veges.  Where should I put them?

Congrats on the squash.  Sounds like a nice crop.

It's misting and I'm not sure about electric weed wackers and even the lightest rain.  So instead of cutting grass I took the two clumps of daffodils that I wanted to move and put them in the bulb bed around the pot of tulips I moved awhile back.  Then I dug holes and put in pots for where I want the rest of the tulips to go.  I still need to bury more pots for asiatic Lilies, more crocuses, and possible some hyacinths.  If I'd have known to put them in pots to begin with I wouldn't have to rebuy them.

So what I'm currently planning is that the asiatic lilies will be at the back of the boarder, then the gladiolus, then the tulips surrounded by daffodils, then crocuses and hycinth in front also surrounded by the protective daffodils.  The tulips crocuses and hycinth all in pots.  Cross your fingers for me.

Another peony is blooming and what was suppose to be dark red is of course pink.  No real suprise there I bought it at walmart.

The orange blossom is alive barely but something is attacking it and eating all of the leaves.  I guess the first dry day I get I'd better spray it with bug spray.

I also need to get the rose leaves off of the ground where all the rain has put them.

The locust are all over the property today.  I'm not sure if I can talk myself into working out there today or not.  I'll think about it.  I hate to loose a good day but I also don't want one of those things on me.  I'd have been fine if I hadn't see that tv blurb with a picture of a little girl with those things all over her shirt.  It gave me the heebee geebee's.  I know it was probably hollywood rather than real but still ugh!

They moved farther down the road so I managed to get out there.

The biggest thing I did was dig a hole for one of the arbor day trees.  I'm going to have to look up which ones survived.  This one had lost all of it's paint so I'll have to see if I marked it by location.  Sometimes I do that.  Then I grabbed 5 gallons of soil from the bottom of the drain field to add to the planting hole.  Then I dug up the rootball and transplanted it to it's new home.  I think I went for mostly flowering trees so what ever it is will be great.

I have two more to go that I have purple paint on them.  I hope I can find where I identified them in one of the posts.

Then I cut a pine sapling back to the ground and through it on the compost pile along with the naked ladies stocks.  The flowers have totally died back because of that cold snap we had.  But I've got a pot full of leaves.  I thought the leaves were suppose to come up first not after.  I'm always so confused.

Then I had to tidy up the compost pile so the greens were covered with browns.  The pile is comming along well I think.

So on the garden to do list:

1.  Transplant the trees.
2.  Clean up the rose leaves that have fallen.
3.  Prune the diseased leaves on the rose bushes.
4.  Transplant the last miniature rose bush.
5.  Cut more grass!
6.  Rake more grass!
7.  Compost more grass!
8.  Love my garden!!! Doing.

I pulled up the rest of the lettuce and radishes.  The lettuce is bitter and the radishes were big enough.  I'm not replanting this year since the lettuce is already bitter.  First time this has happened.  It's too wet to do anything else out there.

Love my radishes.  Sorry your lettuce bolted.

Today I transplanted the second arbor day foundation tree.  It got the back right corner of the backyard for it's new home.  The other one which is the same kind of tree will get the other back corner.  Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow.

While I was digging the hole I found 4 nice stones for the front flowerbed edgings.  Not a whole lot done but it's something.

I got another 20 minute session out in the garden because the rain has kept it cooler out.  It only equated to two long swatches of grass cut in the back yard before I gave up on the weed eater but hopefully it will be enough to add a gallon or 5 to the compost pile.  That would be the most important thing.  Well along with getting the grass cut.

lol. that works.  And if he marks them he may be more willing to look for them when he is cutting.  Right?

I got a couple of things done this morning.  I raked up the grass I cut yesterday and put it in the compost pile.

I transplanted the last white paint arbor day tree.  And of course noticed among the weeds that the two blue paint arbor day trees also survived.  So now I'll have to find homes for them.  Yeah!  They are small enough that I might be able to let them sit for another year while I cut down existing trees and try and find room for them.

The peonies are in bloom although I don't have any red ones yet.  So I went out and put up bamboo sticks and tied the blooms up so they weren't laying on the ground.

Moved 3 more rocks to the edging around the peonies from the back yard.  And that's it for the time being.  I wish I could have done more but that tired me and I have that interview today and I can't take a nap and sleep through it.

A tomato plant has wound up in the blueberry patch.  I have no idea how it did it.  I will transplant it when I'm feeling lucky.  I have a tire with soil in it so there is a place for it.

Today I weeded about 1/3 of the sidewalk bed, the sidewalk, and the foundation bed on the right side of the door.  It's a start.  I wish the grass would stay in the lawn.  Instead that's the only place it avoids.
