Title: African violet blooms
Post by: barleychown on Apr 16, 2008, 07:54:53 PM
I thought I'd start a thread for all of us to share our AV blooms together in one place.

Here's mine for today:

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv177%2Fbarleychown%2Fgardens%25202008%2FIMG_9983.jpg&hash=f0408955de488f0221063d21ddf690b7c8af09fb)

Let's see yours!  :dancingbunny:

Jim bought me these just this past weekend. I love the colors....

Sarah, your purple one looks "rufflier" than mine... :grinnnn:

wow barleychown pretty colors, I don't have that one.  I do have the ones that look like yours Dianna.  Maybe we are twinning up again lol.  I also have some solid colored ones.  Some have just finished blooming and some are just comming into bloom.  When I get a pentium, I'll see about getting pictures.  Either that or I'll take the pictures and see if I can borrow someones pentium to put them up on photobucket.  Where there is a will there is a way lol.

These are still blooming for me, too. They must have liked being moved from where they were at to a new spot... :wink5:

While up in NC this past weekend, my daughter-in-law's grandfather showed me his AV. That thing was huge. I don't believe I have ever seen one that large! Very pretty color, too...

Bonnie, AV's are stonger than you would think. You should try them!

Penny, the key to blooms is the right lighting, and the right food. Have you fed yours?

Here's a new one today:

(https://www.southernspirithunters.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv177%2Fbarleychown%2Fgardens%25202008%2FIMG_9985.jpg&hash=cc32035d18d688dc3dfa03e2d4a006821c098573)

It has more of a purple blush to it than what shows in the pic.

Hmmm, the light seems to be adequate, so what would i feed them Sarah?

For now, and until the middle of June or so, I feed a bloom food at about 1/2 strength. Bloom food is sold where th emiracle grow is, and instead fo being something like 12-12-12, it is instead something like 12-55-7, bacause the middle number, the phosphates, is what induces blooms.

wow dianna those are nice.  Especially the third one.  What a color.  One of mine is blooming and I'm trying to find a place where it won't get sunburned.  They sure are a low light plant in my apartment.  Hopefully that will hold true in the new place.

Yesterday I went out and got some AV soil and two pots.  Then I finally got up the gumption to divide the two baby ones.  Hopefully they will survive my ham fisted gardening.  I've got my fingers crossed.

Is that first one a true red?  I've never seen that color AV.  It is fantastic.

It's as close to true red as I have seen. It's a very pretty color in person. :grinnnn:

I have never seen a red AV before, Sarah. That is beautiful! :grinnnn:

Well I think you have a real winner in that one.  I'll be looking out to see if there is one that color in the stores for me to get.  I'd ask for a cutting but I don't have any luck starting them.

I'm finding that in general I like the ruffled edged av's alittle more than the smooth edged.  What about you?

Well, I'm drawn to the violets with varigated leaves, and this one I have that is called "peppermint girl". She has very scalloped edges. :grinnnn:

My favorite purple ruffly edged AV has bloomed so I know it has forgiven me for leaving it outside for several days during the move.  I never knew they could be so forgiving.  I think where I have the others may be to dark.  I think I'll move them to a new location and see how they do.
